MERCEDES GL350 TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT

  • This time we replace SINGLE row chain in OM642 3.0 Diesel engine, car has only 70k miles, and chain is stretched badly. Mercedes decided to save some steel and made a single row chain, that looks totally unreliable and lasts an even shorter time than a double row chain.

    2011 E350D. 162k. I can see double chain so it's double.
    Why there's a rattling sound NOT every morning?
    My understanding if chain is stretched then it will be rattling every morning. The car just sat 3 days and there was not any rattling upon cold start.
    Something with oil and tensioner?

    Finally its back on the road running smoother than ever. Timing chain, oil cooler seals, deleted swirl flaps, replaced alternator due to bent shaft, removed intercooler and flushed out oil and installed a Provent 200 iv. The OM642 is the most time consuming engine I have ever worked on.

    Another problem is the crap oil they recommend. I run 10-40 full synthetic in the winter and 15-40 in the summer and add zinc or 4 Qts of motorcycle oil in my 07 Gl320. Nice work on this vid Especially the views of the old and new tensioner from the oil filler. When I get home tonight I will check mine.. Have apart to do the oil cooler seals. Still cleaning up the mess..Also adding a Provent 200 iV oil separator.

    Great videos and very much appreciated. A few questions. 1) what would you say is your estimated time (ball park) to R&R the chain on the OM 642 (I have a dual chain). 2) what technique do you use to get the valve cover off. 3) what sealant do you use to reattach the valve cover (permatex black) 4) Are you using the temporary link that comes with the chain rivet kit to pull the new chain through with. 5) is there a rivet kit you find has good hard steel anvils, or better fit the links better than others. I don't want to go cheap on a critical job. Thanks!

    Great video and information. Is this common on the om642 with the duplex chain? Have you had any issue with aftermarket chain kits from Febi, etc? Why the chain guide rails were not replaced during this fix? Arent those necessary to be replaced? What oil change interval would you recommend? I change the oil and filters on my w164 320 cdi every 9'000km and 90% of the driving is highway 10% city driving.

    • @sprintermotors
      @sprintermotors  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you! Yes, it's a common issue with all OM642 engines and all types of chain, closer to 100k, and 200k on a Sprinter. Febi & IWIS are OEM manufactures for MB, never had any issues, Usually, chain guide rails last for a long time, in this case, it wasn't necessary to replace them at all. You are doing great with oil change intervals. I recommend no more than 10k miles. But dealers here stating about 20.000 miles (36.000 km) to be a normal oil change interval. For that reason may GLs, MLs closer to 100k miles - go to auto auction with bad engine.
