MERCEDES GL350 TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT

- čas přidán 12. 09. 2024
- This time we replace SINGLE row chain in OM642 3.0 Diesel engine, car has only 70k miles, and chain is stretched badly. Mercedes decided to save some steel and made a single row chain, that looks totally unreliable and lasts an even shorter time than a double row chain.

Im going to need to do this to my 2011 ml350

No more noise, my Mercedes Gl350 diesel runs like a new one
Vitalic has the most knowledge that i know in this V6 diesel engines OE642
It was a pleasure to work with you!
Did you have to time the camshafts?
Just got mine serviced at Mercedes under warranty with 114,000 miles.
2011 E350D. 162k. I can see double chain so it's double.
Why there's a rattling sound NOT every morning?
My understanding if chain is stretched then it will be rattling every morning. The car just sat 3 days and there was not any rattling upon cold start.
Something with oil and tensioner?
Finally its back on the road running smoother than ever. Timing chain, oil cooler seals, deleted swirl flaps, replaced alternator due to bent shaft, removed intercooler and flushed out oil and installed a Provent 200 iv. The OM642 is the most time consuming engine I have ever worked on.
Great to hear that! Sounds like a lot of work done. Hope it will work fine for a long time!
Another problem is the crap oil they recommend. I run 10-40 full synthetic in the winter and 15-40 in the summer and add zinc or 4 Qts of motorcycle oil in my 07 Gl320. Nice work on this vid Especially the views of the old and new tensioner from the oil filler. When I get home tonight I will check mine.. Have apart to do the oil cooler seals. Still cleaning up the mess..Also adding a Provent 200 iV oil separator.
I use 5W40 oil on engined with over 100k, and 5W30 on the others.
Well shit in hell mine looks just like I suspected. Will be doing this the next few days when off from work. I bought this a couple years ago with around 130,000 miles for $5000. Needed a little work but this is getting old fast.
I only heard the dreaded chain rattle a year ago after putting a 1/2 qt of engine oil flush in and then drove it into town and back about 4 to 5 miles round trip. Changed oil and started up and heard a little chatter and realized o shit thats the chain. After a couple trips it went away after getting re-oiled.
@@trentcarlson4857 Yeah, unfortunately, the only way to fix it - is to replace the chain.
Now to find a temp master link
Thanks for the video. I have a question re: parts. Inside Febi box is indeed an OE supplier's chain. However it is not the case for the tensioner, no? How Febi tensioners are behaving on a longer run? Any experience with INA? INA & Febi are made in Germany, Genuine MB is made in Romania. Thanks.
@@Bootlerov INA is OEM supplier to MERCEDES. Febi is good as well.
IWIS is OEM chain supplier.
Great videos and very much appreciated. A few questions. 1) what would you say is your estimated time (ball park) to R&R the chain on the OM 642 (I have a dual chain). 2) what technique do you use to get the valve cover off. 3) what sealant do you use to reattach the valve cover (permatex black) 4) Are you using the temporary link that comes with the chain rivet kit to pull the new chain through with. 5) is there a rivet kit you find has good hard steel anvils, or better fit the links better than others. I don't want to go cheap on a critical job. Thanks!
On the double gang chain engines they tend to last the lifetime of the engine if regular oil changes are done
hey, great video. what is the torque spec for the tensioner and is the crankshaft supposed to be in a particular spot when installing the tensioner? and also how can i tell the position of the crankshaft (top dead center etc.) if the timing cover is still on?
thanks
great sharing
Hi guys, (om642) after changing my timing chain through the right cylinder head ( feeding through) I am one link short or one extra teeth . At the start I thought it was the tensioner replace it was making too much noise and this please need the car to get around and work. thank you jack
Great video and information. Is this common on the om642 with the duplex chain? Have you had any issue with aftermarket chain kits from Febi, etc? Why the chain guide rails were not replaced during this fix? Arent those necessary to be replaced? What oil change interval would you recommend? I change the oil and filters on my w164 320 cdi every 9'000km and 90% of the driving is highway 10% city driving.
Thank you! Yes, it's a common issue with all OM642 engines and all types of chain, closer to 100k, and 200k on a Sprinter. Febi & IWIS are OEM manufactures for MB, never had any issues, Usually, chain guide rails last for a long time, in this case, it wasn't necessary to replace them at all. You are doing great with oil change intervals. I recommend no more than 10k miles. But dealers here stating about 20.000 miles (36.000 km) to be a normal oil change interval. For that reason may GLs, MLs closer to 100k miles - go to auto auction with bad engine.
@@sprintermotors Thank you for the feedback appreciate your help. Maybe when time comes(if) i will go for febi chain and tensioner. Stay safe🙂
@@ad166bt Chain is made by IWIS only, tensioner by Febi) Feel free to ask any questions! And welcome to our channel!
The real fix is removing the timing covers and changing all guides
My 2011 R350 chain was stretched at 70k. I got to 98k before just leasing a new Audi almost four years ago. I miss it a lot, but the repair costs were ridiculous and my trusted Mercedes-trained mechanic was not interested in working on it.
Is this a shortcut or this is how the job is done? I think watching this video is scaring me away from the GL350 haha. Maybe Q7 TDI is a better engine..
Great video! When you were rolling in the new chain was the old tensioner in or the new tensioner. Or no tensioner? Or does it even matter? I'm about to roll in my new chain and I don't want to tempt it to skip a tooth
Keep the old tensioner in place. After you will put the new chain - replace the tensioner.
How did it go rolling on the new chain. I will need to do mine soon. Mine just started rattling
We live in New Jersey. We have a 2011 GL Bluetec. Do you know anybody in the NJ area that can perform the timing chain replacement the way you showed it on this video?
Hi! I will try to find someone who can help you. Update here later.
If Philadelphia work for you, can sent you adr .
Wow nice
Thank you!
About to do same thing on my GL. Some timing chain kits come with what looks like plastic guides.
How essential is it to replace those? It seems you guys left original guides in there?
Usually chain stretches under 100k miles. For that mileage, there is no need to replace guides.
My ml320 cdi has problem with idling it starts and the engine runs for 2-3 sec than shuts off what does it mean? No check engine lights
Hi Igor! Check fuel pressure, may be fuel pressure sensor cuts fuel pressure and the engine stalls.
Hey can you please post link for the parts and the tool needed to do the job!
Hi! Tool is in production now, very soon I will post a link with a complete set of parts and tools for this job DIY!
If I was in WA state how much would you charge me if I paid cash?
What part of WA state and quickly can you get it done?
You can also check out ID parts and plug in your vehicle and the should have it.
Ok but what was the timing chain rivet change tool that you use for this GL350 2013-2015?
It was simple chinese tool. You can buy it on eBay, OM642 engine
Why would you remove the injectors? They have nothing to do with the timing chain and there are a number of video's showing the same technique without removing them.
Well, if you can remove the valve cover (chain is under cover) without removing injectors you are either magician or a superman.
Hi What are the interval you recommend for oil change? I do mine at every 10 000 KM with liqui moly 5w40. What are the symptoms of a bad chain, I have 175 000 KM
That is perfect oil change interval. Symptom of bad chain - is chain rattle on a cold start.
What made you change the timing chain? What was wrong with the chain and tensioner?
The chain was stretched, made a rattling sound on cold start-up, known many issues of chain braking up.
How many hours does it take for this this job ? My 2014 gl350 does rattle noise for a few secs when I cold start it.
Around 20 hours of labor, it is a chain problem 100%
Can you put the Link in für bio from where you buy für Timing Chain IWIS. I also habe OM642 i want to buy the same chain please put Link in bio or text here thank you very good Job keep up👍

What's the part number for the single roller chain? The Febi 33902 is a double chain no matter where I buy it and so is the Iwis 0009936376. Even the official mbparts.mbusa.com lists my 2008 GL320 with a Iwis 0009936376 dual chain but my eyes don't lie, I have a single chain!
In 2008 GL - double row chain suppose to be. But here is a part number for a single row chain - 0009937176
@@sprintermotors Damn. I swear I'm being gaslit here. I looked last week and it was a single row chain and 5 minutes ago I checked and it was a double row chain! The only explanation is someone or something replaced my timing chain without my knowledge! I feel so.... violated. Anyway thanks for the advice!
@@erikkovacs3097 Replacement procedure is the same. We finally got our tools from production. I will post a link for the complete set: tool+chain+tensioner soon.
Hi, I'll do this job next week and have no experience with timing chains. I have exactly the same engine. Can I disconnect or at least connect the chain with this cheap tool? www.alza.cz/auto/quatros-nytovacka-motocyklovych-a-rozvodovych-retezu-qs10095-d5650035.htm
You can disconnect the chain even without this tool. But it will a problem to connect the new chain to the old one and connect the new chain. Try to find a cheap Chinese set specifically for OM642 Engine.
@@sprintermotors Thanks, I did it today. It was pretty easy, bud rolling the new chain wasn't... Chain jumped out of the cam wheel... oh, what a disaster. Yesterday I'll try to set timing. Thanks, for your vids!
