    As a bassoonist (German system), I have never in 35 years been able to play this piece to the degree that this young lady has performed it. I wil admit to not actually liking the piece particularly (too modern to my tastes), but absolutely hats off to Sophie for at least showing me how it should be done!

    With Sophie Dartigalongue, this splendid concerto reaches its apotheosis. Here, Jolivet's genius and Dartigalongue's are in perfect harmony. It's awesome!

    What a wonderful musician. The bassoon is no impediment. She has conquered it. Congratulations and congratulations on her new job. May she have a long and successful career.

      Conquered? She is just an instrument for bassoon to express itself! :)

    • @LawrenceRhodes
      @LawrenceRhodes Před 3 lety +2

      @@francoisvillon1300 The music comes from the composer and the musician that interprets it. Usually the bassoon is an impediment to music. One must master the bassoon and it's problems. If the bassoon expresses itself it will be out of tune and uneven. It is the technical part of the human who must balance the output of a bassoon to even it out and let it flow.

    The Jolivet has been around for a long time, even though it sounds "contemporary" it is not. It has been a pretty standard piece for many competitions and even auditions for years. I remember spending time on this this in grad school back in the day. That was when it was a pretty avant garde piece. It is still a very difficult and dangerous piece, but the top young performers today have such a mastery of technique (especially in the high register) it is scary. For non-bassoonists, it is important to understand that the fingering system is unlike any other wind instrument, not even close to the Boehm or semi-Boehm system that is basic for most woodwinds (think up to 11 keys for the left thumb alone). And once you get into the higher register, it is downright crazy. Instrument makers have added features in the last 10+ years that have certainly assisted players...lots of optional extra keys and special keywork. But the instrument is still a beast to master. Ms. Dartigalongue's performance is spectacular in every way.

      for bassoon contemporary means written after 1900, most music written for bassoon after 1900 is extremely ugly, this concerto sadly is no exception. But bassoonist are happy with every piece of crap that is written by a composer with some kind of credibility.
      I need to add that I find Sophies performance outstanding!

    Je réécoute régulièrement ce magnifique concerto de Jolivet, compositeur que je vénère, et qui mérite, ô combien, d'être redécouvert (ses concertos pour flûte, trompette, violoncelle, ondes Martenot sont autant de merveilles!) Et la prestation de la jeune Sophie Dartigalongue est simplement époustouflante! La rencontre de cette musicienne exceptionnelle et de ce grand compositeur est un moment béni des dieux! Merci infiniment pour cet upload qui me donne un bonheur qui ne se dément jamais.

    SD tamed the wild beast masterfully! A spot on performance of my favorite bassoon concerto.Anyone who thinks extreme high notes should not be played or even practiced on bassoon is like telling a surgeon not to attempt certain surgeries because they are too difficult. Composers will continue to write for the bassoon in this extreme register. Sometimes shrillness is a sound that is appropriate and even desired, in some music.

      Even though the high register A - C is quite strenuous on the lips and cheeks, once you master them fully, you broaden your options in music you can play :-) One of the reason I play the bassoon is because it's such a versatile instrument and it is, in my opinion, quite a challenge to master :-)

      Typically, obviously not in all cases though, contemporary music or music falling into that category doesn't have a key. They're usually written in C and the composer writes in accidentals simply to match the chord and to get the feeling they want on that particular note.

      It's atonal. There's no key and the focus is on the mood it sets. It's actually more freedom to the composer, but it's really difficult to write atonally and it not sound like a hot pile of garbage.
