The Bartman Incident | The Mishap That Extended The Cubs' Curse

  • As summer gave way to fall in 2003, the long-suffering Chicago Cubs found themselves in unfamiliar territory: they were still alive.
Baseball’s most celebrated losers squeaked into the playoffs for the first time in a half-decade, then inexplicably found themselves playing for the National League pennant - four wins away from exorcising demons that had tortured the franchise and their fan base for a generation.
With Chicago on the verge of victory in Game 6, a seemingly innocuous fly ball down the left field line changed the course of history for the franchise and for the unfortunate fan who ended up an unwitting main character and tragic scapegoat in a stunning Cubs collapse.

My father was at this game, in the press box reporting for our small southern Illinois town. Say's he remembers watching trash pour down in Bartmans general direction, felt very sorry for the guy.

I don't get why Cub fans seem to think they were gonna win it all without the Bartman play.... Florida was never losing that series. Bartman simply sped up the inevitable.

This is one of the aspects of sports fandom that I think is hella toxic. The need for fans to find scapegoats. It’s easier for us as humans to process things when we have someone to blame. If anyone is responsible for this collapse, it’s clearly Dusty Baker. It’s horrible what the fans did to this guy. If I became a pariah for one of my favorite teams like this, I’d feel horrible. He didn’t deserve it. It’s not his fault the Cubs gave up 8 runs. It wasn’t even third out that he interfered with.

@@JZ2001JCOr could have swept them 4-0 but didn't. I feel bad for Bartman he didn't deserve all that one bit. Shit happens and technically the ball was in the stands so it was fair game the umpires didn't even rule interference so the fans are even more stupid because ANY little child would have done the same, any older adult who wanted to either collect a game used ball or sell it would have tried to catch it.

I saw this game live on TV as a Kid, is surreal looking back that Bartman actually became a thing. Dusty Baker should be charge with War Crime for the way he handled the Cubs pitching staff that night.

For 13 years I lost respect for Cubs fans after what they to Bartman. We're all imperfect and we're going to make mistakes, but what they did was just down right stupid and inexcusable. Me being a Braves fan, my Dad and I was laughing when the Cubs lost to The Marlins during Game 7. They got what they deserve

People nowadays do much worse. A lot of people try to cancel someone by making up a story based on few facts. It's the majority of the general public. They don't even realize that they are doing that too. People think they are logical but the majority are not that logical.

I said in a comment that with it being in the stands one, the umpires didn't even rule interference, two ANY child, teen, or fan who wanted it to collect or sell would have went for that ball. The minority of fans there would have processed that it was more important if you want to see the Cubs hopefully win and make the World Series and let Alou catch that ball or at least let him try. The majority of the haters who trashed Bartman are hypocrites because they almost all would have tried to catch it as it was in the stands. That's just my opinion anyway.

at Yankees stadium first row always the conversation comes up what to do if the ball comes into the stands. this back in the 80's, 90's, 2000's. if the Yankees are at bat we play defense and dont allow a catch by opposing team. if the Yankees are on defense we ALLOW them to catch it come into the stands to make any catch. but I guess in Chicago this conversation doesnt come up. remember Jeter flying into the stands against Red Sox. no one tried to catch the ball. in chicago what was said its human nature to try for the ball. WRONG not when your team is on defense.

When you watch the highlights of the last 2 games in that series it's clear Florida was the superior team. Cub fans just couldn't accept that. Bartman or not, Cubs were never going to that world series. Maybe if they were playing a more historically respected team, it would have been easier to cope. But a young team like the Marlins robbing the loyal cubs fans seems unfair. Glad the nicer Cub fans got to celebrate in 2016.

Bartman has nothing to do with the Curse! Out 2 should have come with ball to SS going to 2nd base for the out and ball to RF would have been 3rd out and Cubs should have still had 3-2 lead

6:07 although multiple fans reached for the ball... pictures don't lie. Why do people lie and choose to believe what they want? All those fans were not reaching for the ball. Two people were...Bartman and dude in front of him. People behind Bartman are clearly backing off. And the dude in front of Bartman was reaching back, keeping his arms/hands on his side of the railing. Bartman is the ONLY one who interferes, only one who has his hands extended on the field side of the railing.
