  • Melian the Maia was an instrumental figure of the First Age of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, and she was a light amidst much darkness in Beleriand. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about Melian in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    Melian the Maia is one of my favourite characters in the Silmarillion. Something about her seems so mystic, besides of course the fact that she is basically an angel older than Arda itself

    I imagine that first conversation between Cirdan and Melian:

    Tolkien never wrote about Melian and Thingol beyond the Fall of Doriath, but given that only Feanor and Finwe were specifically mentioned as not receiving a new body as long as Arda endures, we can assume that Thingol eventually left Mandos and was reunited with Melian. The chief sadness of their tale comes from the loss of their daugther at least until the end of the World - of Luthien, the greatest elf and the one through which a divine strain, older than the World itself, entered into the lineages of Elves and Men.
    "Lúthien went to Menegroth and healed the winter of Thingol with the touch of her hand. But Melian looked in her eyes and read the doom that was written there, and turned away; for she knew that a parting beyond the end of the world had come between them, and no grief of loss has been heavier than the grief of Melian the Maia in that hour."

    Alas, he had everything, and yet let greed and arrogance blind him to not see the wisdom and council of his love, and lives and a kingdom that might have survived until all elves diminished into the West were forfeit and wasted. 😢😢

      Thingol, one of the Firstborn of Eru, Knew the thing that Melian the Maia did not, End and Doom are Part of the First song of the Ainur, We all must Perish, We all must meet our end.
      And Thus Thingol SAVED middle-earth, and gave us the Bloodline of the Great Kings, and Elven Healers.

      @@abalogan interesting theory indeed, however I don’t think it would have gone that way. Thingol and the others from his people weren’t under the curse of Mandos and the Valar invitation to the immortal lands still stood for them. And they had a Mayar on their side, which would bridge even better Middle Earth to Valinor. In fact, help could have been sought earlier had Doriath endured. @@abalogan it doesn’t mean Doriath would fail too. Melian returned to Valinor after Thingol died, why couldn’t she go to seek help, would Doriath be under imminent threat from Morgoth? Thingol and his wife Melian are my favorite characters in Tolkien's fantasy world. Elwë, as Tolkien described him, was "the mightiest of the Eldar save Fëanor only", the wise and mighty king who ruled peacefully for millennia, uniting all Elves in single culture. It's very unfortunate that Thingol's success clouded his judgement and he became arrogant and reckless. But there is a lesson in Elwë's story - the highest of us could fall deepest. Melkor, the angelic being, was the most powerful of the Ainur, and like Lucifer who was the most powerful of all angels, Melkor fell deepest, into the hell. The same goes for Fëanor. As for the Elwë's wife, the gift of Melian the Maia to Elves and Men is a gift of angelic magic through her blood. Magic is a symbol for two forms of creativity. The first one is the creativity of the imagination - to tell stories and create worlds. The other is the creativity of great leadership - to uplift humanity to be more angelic in this world (that's Aragorn in his best, who, along with his wife Arwen, also was descendant of Thingol and Melian).

Melian and Thingol are a union of two of Iluvatar's most precious creations, ainur and elves. Beren and Luthien add men into that union. Iluvatar's three most precious creations united into one bloodline, and it would be that bloodline that would unite the men of Middle-Earth and expel the wicked creations of Melkor and Sauron.

It is the shortest chapter of the Silmarilion, but my most favorite one. I like how Elwë gave up everything just to be with his love. And Melian in time would be reunited with Thingol because he would likely eventually be released from the Halls of Mandos and take corporeal form again. And the Valar were told that in the 2nd great song, after the end of Arda & Ea, that the spirits of Man would join with the Ainur (Valar & Mair) in that singing. So Melian would see her daughter again after all the ages of the world were spent.

    Thanks for this video. I have always loved Melian with her girdle protecting the land of Doriath, and Galadriel who did basically the same in Lothlorien It appeals to me because i have always felt the same as them, sad about the worlds swift changes and the loss of so many places of beauty and fond memory. I can deeply empathise with their wish to make their loved places undying. Places where time flows, but doesnt erode. Where the leaves wave in the wind but never fall.
    Also, i wonder about something,, since we are on the topic of beings created directly by Eru,... i have always wondered if Tolkien ever wrote anything about the 'original elves' Because Elves have children, like men. But originally the first elves 'awakened' in Cuivenen. Those were not born, but made by Eru. I wonder if they were special in any way, or if they were held in special regard by later elves, and if any remained alive and in middle earth throughout the ages. i cznt remember ever having found anything about that.

    • @dendrocerulean5908
      @dendrocerulean5908 Před 3 lety

      I believe Ingwe, Finwe and Elwe (later known as Thingol) were among the original elves who awoke in Cuivenen. The Vala Orome chose them and brought them to Valinor as the three ambassadors that Yoystan mentions. They all became kings/leaders of their people. Ingwe was the king of the Vanyar elves. Finwe was king of the Noldor elves. Olwe the brother of Elwe/Thingol became king of the Teleri elves in Valinor. Thingol was of course the king of Doriath. It’s also possible that Cirdan is one of the original elves as well. I’m sure they would definitely be revered by most of the later elves.

    • @pathwanderer1183
      @pathwanderer1183 Před 3 lety

      @@dendrocerulean5908 Thanks for your reply :) Tolkien isnt very clear about it as far as i know. He does say that Orome took them to Valinor, but never how many 'originals' were left among them at that time.
      But it stands to reason that some were and they would probably rise to the top of the hierarchy. as elves seem to get more powerful with age., and being personally made by Eru should count for something too, if the Nol;dor became more powerful just by going to Aman and looking at the light of the trees.
      Cìrdan would make sense, he is described as one of the oldest, so old he even grows a beard, and how could he be one of the oldest if he were not from Cuivenen (unless none or very few of the originals remained ofc and he was one of the first generations born)
      Since not all of the elves went with Orome it could be that some of the ones that reamined in middle earth were originals too. Though we could wonder how many would still be left after the countless years of the early ages and the many wars that middle saw. It stands to reason that most that stayed in middle earth were either killed or got tired and sailed west.
      Still it is mind boggling to think about living for so long. Imagine, being one of the earliest homo sapiens, having been there when fire and cooking were invented, how flint tools were developed and having met neanderthals in person, knowing all of prehistory and seeing even the pyramids of egypt as something relatively recent. I could imagine getting tired and starting to think about sailing west.

    She IS very cute and most vain. Working with Vaire she weaves details in and others out. Nothing would be remembered of her unfiltered. Valar instagram. Vaire would not comprehend minor descriptive elements in the great tapestry quite as well as Melian herself.. having lived through Middle-Earth and being ages old apprentice of Dream Lord as well. So she gets to hide herself there in one glorious display. Most cute and innocent fun.
    For all her mystery... a magical art like hers is a talent in covering whole realms with invisibility cloaks. Very smart and beautifully done.
    Why should wisdom be so Remarkable ? She's a maia. Same goes for beauty etc. She's a maia. All of them are what they are as much as she is what she is. (I do love her most of all. She's the best she's got _Style_ and an amazing lover too) When Vaire brings out the tapestry you'll get to compare.
    When there is no mystery there is no need for Mystery Lady.
    She's not a mystery lady and I pray all of you with your proud cocks if you love her for that she'll weave you out and how nice then to be finally mysterious with her... on the dawn of that great revealing no one is interested in mysteries at all.
    With much love. Just.. imho. Hmm.

    You do realize that Meilan would have been reunited with Thingol since he would have been reborn in Valinor after his time in the halls of Mandos? She undoubtedly knew this. She didn’t tarry in middle earth for his loss, but to ponder what other good she might yet do there, before returning to him.

    I think it was Fingolfin who had a singing enchantment dual with Morgoth..... and I wonder whether Morgoth could have been defeated by a duet of enchantment had Melian joined him on his quest.,.. maybe it was Fingon or Finrod tho.... I'd have to go back and check. Either way, they KNEW that the Noldor would never be able to defeat Morgoth by any powers they had... but with Melian? Idk... what do you think?
