      … and two months later: ended up trying this myself with the same chenyang (sp) oculink 16x to 4x, same m.2 to oculink adapter, an ASUS RTX3060 (not TI), and wrote the OS (ubuntu) to orange’s 256 GB emmc module. It actually 100% works from the hardware side of things! Just not the software side unfortunately. I couldn’t get nvidia’s arm 64 driver to work, and the “additional drivers” in the apt repo didn’t want to work either. Didn’t try other distros or cards though.

    I love raspPi alternatives although I’m not sure that I would call them like that. Even though the hardware is there, firmware/software is for the most part shit. I lost recently 3 days fighting to get HDMI to work on OrangePi 4, just to realise that the public version is bigged and nobody checked it. Then I downgraded and networking was not working on that version. It’s just a struggle to do anything with them, because the community is nowhere near the one from raspberry.

    OrangePi is probably the second best thing you could get in terms of support, so this is cool to see. Many SBC's suffer from the fact that the kernel is ancient and drivers & BSP won't be updated....ever... I feel like OrangePi is ahead of the curve in that regard.

    • @microlinux
      @microlinux Před rokem

      For whoever want to use mainline kernel, they don't use the official images, those are for makers that needs vpu/npu/etc to work properly. Mainline: armbian/manjaro/etc..

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 Před rokem

      @@microlinux Yeah, but A. Not everything uses the RK3588 - there's many SBC"s and many SBC"s for which no up to date driver exists. B. Sure, there may be an up-to-date kernel & gfx driver for some off brand SBC, but it's not always the case it'll drop in nicely, and if it doesn't, then you have to try to fix it manually. Now if you want to jerk around with then that's fine, but not everybody does. C. There's more to it than just the kernel. The image will at the very least have the DTB's included which may not work correctly if you just take some other image for some other SBC.
      When I say support I mean going to the website and downloading a modern image with a modern kernel and modern drivers. Then I also mean community support - when something breaks there's a forum or how-to's or whatever else to fix it because somebody already put in the work. With the Orange Pi you get a pretty decent shot at that. With the Raspberry Pi you get very good support, tons of info and forums about it. With some off brand no-name shit? There's tons of them for which the latest images, if you can find them, are running early 3's version of the kernel or even earlier. If something doesn't work? Figure it out yourself. And if some drivers you drag over from another SBC's image don't perform well on yours? Tough luck. It's all fine if you want to just mess around with installs, but if you want the shit to just work out of the box then support is important. And just because there's another SBC which uses the same chip as yours and has modern drivers, doesn't mean the user wants to spend time pillaging shit off of that image to [hopefully] work with their SBC.
      In general, with anything in life. The less the # of people is who use something, the lower the amount of support and information about that thing there is. A commonly used configuration will typically always work out of the box. Joe Blow's SBC which "should be the same since the chip is from the same family?" Maybe not always. And maybe the user doesn't care to fix it.

    Not to knock these videos or anything, but I don't care about any SBC that's several times more powerful than a Raspberry Pi if it also costs several times more. The RPi 4 is four years old now and hasn't gotten a price drop (if anything, it's more expensive due to shortages); give me something that's more powerful for the same price, and then I'll be interested

    • @markleaf1970
      @markleaf1970 Před rokem +35

      It isn't that bad, it is 3-4x faster than the Pi 4 in some regards and doesn't cost twice as much. I just got an Orange Pi 5B I am going to be testing, I got it for about $90 USD. The Pi 4 MSRP for the same 4GB is $55, so it isn't even twice as expensive. Not to mention that a Pi 4 is out of stock everywhere, and you can only get it for like $140 from people selling it used.
      I do want a newer faster Raspberry Pi though, as it tends to have better software support.

    WARNING to @ETAPRIME - I think you made a big mistake. The Pi 5 PLUS has an UNcripplied RK3588, not the RK3588S!
    The I/O is far better on the former - PCIe v3 based rather than v2. A full size M.2 2280 NVMe SSD is more readily available than 2242 size modules. Ethernet ports are 2.5G. In short the OPi website has many omissions and incorrect pictures.

    • @Shardis2701
      @Shardis2701 Před rokem +1

      Unless the video's already been edited I believe the video has all the RK3588 specs and pictures correct. The description does have the RK3588S instead of the RK3588 though. ;)
      I'm also not sure what you're describing on the official Opi5+ site page though. I believe I ran in to it about a day after the details were listed. From what I'm seeing the pictures are matching the hardware I've got sitting on my other desk and they tech specs / details are correct as far as I can tell. What are you seeing on the site that's missing or wrong?

    Check your spelling before publish the review. I know you were in hurry, however people will notice that you typed ANdroid. It is a small mistake, but who knows you may do a bigger. BTW all Orange Pi computers on sale now. It is not a big difference, but $5-$7 can be nice.

    • @MrPir84free
      @MrPir84free Před rokem

      The 5 Plus is what's shown; the 5B is an interesting option if you aren't looking for hdmi input, or nvme support. Both are considerably faster than the Raspberry PI.
      The biggest downside to the 5 Plus is that as of right now, there's no cases for it for immediate consumption. My homemade case has lots to be desired.

    The only question is, do you buy this one or wait for a couple of months? They just might put out a version with onboard wifi/BT just like they did to the people who bought the first version. This is what we went through in the 90s with PCs. You bought something awesome, spent a paycheck or 2 on it and you barely had it installed before something absolutely worth upgading to came out. This is also why stuff like retropie is so hard to do for other SBCs. It has to be redone every time they upgrade this device.

    • @thewiirocks
      @thewiirocks Před rokem +1

      They already have the 5B that has the Wifi/Bluetooth built in. Go ahead and get that if that's all you want. Just be aware that you give up NVMe. If you want all the goodies, just buy the Wifi/BT module for this board (5 Plus). You'll then have Wifi/BT/NVMe/2x2.5Gbps/2xHMDI out/HDMI in/USB-C... basically everything you could ever want out of a computer. The Plus is a freakin battlestation.

    It dont worth it at all, I bought a orange pi 5 plus 16gb with power supply and a eMMC for $179, a WD 1T M.2 drive $75, a Wireless module for $15, a fan, box and WIFI antennas after taxes all added up to $333 with that price you can buy a very decent mini PC, also the process of flashing require more knowledge and experience making other SBC boards more user friendly, easy and faster to setup example the Raspberry Pi is easier, well supported, with a bigger community, good support and software options. In my opinion dollar by dollar you get way better performance and a solid build with a mini PC, if is a SBC what you go for a Raspberry Pi 5.
    Edit: All returned to Amazon.
