The fact that new guns are stiff and stay stiff is a testament to the fine tolerances to which they’re manufactured. It’s not a flaw, it’s a sign of quality.

An American is visiting London. He decides to go into Holland & Holland to see what all the fuss is about.
"I'd like to have a look at that side-by-each you've got there", he says to the less than amused clerk while pointing to a Royal Deluxe on display. Handed the gun he proceeds to open and close it a few times. "Gee", he says, "This shotgun is awfully stiff".
The clerk, trying to maintain an aura of professionalism says, "Sir, our usual clients are not accustomed to opening their own guns".

I put Honda 60% molybdenum disulfide grease on every part associated with the “hinge” and tang of a CZ All American trap and it worked miracles. That gun was stiffer than you could imagine, and now it is very tolerable.

The factory lube is designed to insulate the gun from corrosion more than lubricating the bearing surfaces. As the gun is cycled, the lube is replaced by the lubricants added by the user over time. The process can be expedited by using a cleaning lubricant initially and switching to a lithium based lubricant after the gun gets to the point of effortless use.

Every gun I buy. Pistol. Shotgun etc. The first thing I do is a deep disassemble/clean. Bc ive had brand new guns with terrible packing grease and rust already (looking at you sig). Then lube effectively. I use Teflon gun grease in friction spots and oil all external metal. This is mostly my own opinion but has served me well for the 25yrs I've had some of my firearms.

You don't service a car every year if it's had little use. The same is true for a gun. Better advice would be to service it every X,000 cartridges or Y years (whichever happens sooner).
What X and Y are probably depends on the gun.

My Yildiz SPZ ME12 was so stiff out of the box I strained a shoulder tendon trying to work the break action my first day shooting it. After about 150 shells through it, it's loosened up a bit, but still has a way to go yet before I can use it effortlessly. It is a joy to shoot, though, so I'll soldier on with it. It's good to know a stiff action is a sign of tight tolerances that will provide quality service in the long term.

  • @Tedcz2e
    @Tedcz2e Před měsícem

My Lanber was difficult to open from new. I finally used grease on all bearing services and this was an improvement. This grease is cleaned and renewed after each use. I also use a thin oil elsewhere. Opening is also helped by taking the weight of the barrels, the top lever is then easier to move. The gun has mechanical triggers that are cocked on opening so this increases the effort to completely open the gun.

I bought a cheap over and under less than 750 so it wasn’t anything spectacular. You could barely brake it open over your knee. I put maybe 100-200 shells through it a year. So rather than spend the next 10-20 years to get to that loosened up, it was loosened up so I can actually try to enjoy it over the next 5-10 years haha

Too much oil will attract dust and that will make it stiff. When I get a new gun I clean off all the oil as it's often too viscous. As another poster mentioned, factory lube is normally far too thick and has corrosion inhibitors for transport. Nothing wrong about that but a good clean and a very light bearing oil applied sparingly, like sewing machine oil, like 3 in 1, but not too much and just a bit, don't drench.

I bought a new Browning 525, from my local shooting school in January. I shoot once a week, sometimes twice. I average 150 cartridges per week. I have found recently the gun is fine BUT when the bottom barrel gets hot, the fore end develops about 2mm of play at the "muzzle end". So HOT barrels is resulting in 2-3 mm of play at the schnable end - it's almost like I can push the "beak" of the wood inward towards the barrel, and it makes a clicking noise when I do.
Once the barrels cool down, the problem disappears......
Action nice and tight, but forend is junk!

I’ve just bought a Browning b5.25s. Very stiff but have an issue where the lever 9 times out of 10 won’t stay open when you break the gun with the forend off so when refitting the barrel it hits the mechanism and won’t shut unless you hold the lever over.
Second issue. After shooting around 60 cartridges through it the trigger sticks and on the second shot( doesn’t matter which barrel your selecting) and once the it jammed so I relaxed and was about to lower the gun and it went off by itself.

All you need to do with a stiff gun Is turn it on its side put the bottom of the stock against your body just above your waist and use it as a lever and do the same when you close it

honestly rather have a tight gun then something that falls open like an old shooting school hire gun that’s partly why i’m looking at a ceasar geurini invictus as my next serious gun i don’t want a gun that needs re jointing or tightening up after 20’000 cartridges

My thoughts exactly 👍🏼 they also offer a service where they will rebuild your gun for a very reasonable price. I had mine done a year or so ago from what I remember it was around £250 but they fully stripped it basically replaced all parts that rub against another re set up and sent back 👍🏼

There is smooth to open and then there is loose, and there is tight from new and wearing from new- cheap guns wear out good guns wear in. Never slam a gun closed and grease joint/mating faces, lost count of how many people i have seen who close their gun like trying to break it in half, you do that and lack of grease and that torque means excess wear and quickly
