    Started Keto and intermittent fasting at the end of November 2021. Starting weight: 275. BMI of 39.9 (morbidly obese). Very high blood pressure 150/130 taking maximum BP meds and a resting heart rate of 80. Afib with cardiologist wanting to perform an ablation. Terrible skin rashes. Prostrate problems. Terrible joint pain. Sugarholic. Pre-diabetic. Extremely high cholesterol and triglycerides and on statins. 6 months later, weight is 196, BP meds cut in half and consistently 110/65 and resting heart rate of 45-50. BMI is 29.4. Afib is 100% gone, as are all the skin problems. No longer taking statins, triglycerides plummeted and cholesterol is perfect with the exception of higher LDL levels. I owe it all to Thomas, Dr. Berg, Dr. Ken Berry and Dr. Cywes. I got my life back. I have 20 lbs to go to hit my target weight. Thanks to Keto and IF, I will hit my target and stay there.

      So true.
      Yesterday was 3 months on keto/IF for me. Just in the last week or so, I’ve been able to do
      20/4 easily, which I know would’ve been impossible in the first 2 months. Plus there were times I really needed my blueberries for something sweet. But I just kept at it and I’m surprised how easy 20/4 feels now.
      I’m down 30 pounds, and its probably more like 40+, since I didn’t weigh myself for the first month. (And lots of inches- pants are falling off. 😜 The first delivery of new clothes just arrived: yay. ☺️
      What I’m saying is: this works. Stick with it, do it cleanly and correctly, and it works.

    I've always known that keto wasn't for me because of my high triglycerides. But what has helped a lot is the advice to cut back my carbs to about less than 100-150g a day, staying away from vegetable oils, and also the intermittent fasting 6/18. It hasn't helped me lose weight, but it has lowered my blood pressure away from stage 1 hypertension without meds, removed me from a pre-diabetic status, and I feel better doing it.

    Ahh I did keto for most of a year then tried slowly adding carbs back into my diet and felt like my body just got so inflamed. Still thinking I may be insulin resistant. Forever searching for the right balance in my life. I'm back on keto this past month and feel quite a bit better. Did a 3 day fast and got down to my healthy goal weight (I gained around 10lbs adding carbs back in) and I've managed to say their for the past week eating clean keto.

    • @OZZIEMV
      @OZZIEMV Před 2 lety +5

      Apparently it takes approx 2 years to reverse insulin resistance as stated by Dr Berg, I've been on Keto/low carb for nearly 3 years, so I'm taking a break from low carb and cycling between high ( Oats and low GI brown rice) and low carb to see if there are any benefits. That failing, I'm back on low carb as inflammation is always lower without carbs.

    I had high triglycerides when I started, but Dr. Berg told me to just focus on increasing the amount of green vegetables and increase the intensity of my workout in the gym. I started to add an extra day at the gym and an extra mile each time on the elliptical as well as targeted a higher heart rate while doing so. At my next check in, triglycerides dropped all the way to the floor. How I look at triglycerides now is simply a buildup of unused energy floating around your blood. More dense vegetables and high intensity workouts should start to work it off most times like it did for me.
    Try to mimic caveman behavior as much as possible which definitely included a lot of high intensity cardio

    • @GregariousAntithesis
      @GregariousAntithesis Před 2 lety +6

      I think triglycerides tell you if you are in fat burning mode or fat storage mode. You could have high triglycerides if you are eating less calories than you are burning becsuse obviously when your body is burning your fat stores your triglycerides will increase. I found out that it is not the best idea to have your blood labs done the day after going to the gym for a decent workout. My uric acid levels were elevated, when tested a week later without going to the gym the day before, they were close to normal.

      No disrespect to anyone trying to understand the human body. I think Dom’s ideas need to include more definition. I'm looking forward to a simplification of the jargon. They throw around terms like "high fat" "low carb" "caloric restriction" "time restricted eating" "intermittent fasting" ...... inconsistently. Makes my head spin!
      I happen to like Dr. Berg's "healthy keto" which has proven to improve my health over the last 3 years. Dr. Berg does a much better job at defining, than many doctors and nutritionists on CZcams.
      I think Thomas has a good heart and provides some pretty interesting info, but I think he needs to widen his reach by interviewing Dr. Berg, Dr. Rob Cywes, Dr. Steve Gundry Dr. Ken Berry and a biological dentist or two. Also, there is a population of absolutely "ripped" athletes that have type II diabetes and do not even know it.

    This is so timely for me. I started the keto diet two years ago and loved it i finally wasn’t starving all the time. I also combined it with intermittent fasting. I didn’t lose weight and very slowly gained some weight. My blood sugar and triglycerides started climbing. I finally took the DNA Company test and as it turns out I have the gene that makes fat metabolism very challenging I also don’t metabolize carbs well. Changed my diet to low carb of mostly veggies and a few fruits with moderate fat and protein. My blood sugar dropped from the 110s daily to the 80s and my triglycerides came way down. I am prediabetic I could not believe it. The DNA test helped me to dial down my diet to something that works for my body and I am finally starting to feel better

Another hint that it's time to stop is when you're demonizing healthy foods that just aren't part of a ketogenic diet. that makes a big difference. If you're hiding from your friends or family members because you've eaten too many carrots, or feeling ashamed.... You know it's time to stop. (OR, get new friends/associates who don't police you).

    I was on Dr. Berg's KETO/IF. However my protein sources were beef and eggs. And I had cheat carbs every weekend ( _cookies or cake etc._ ) My weight was perfect. Energy levels were good. But my triglyceride number was 454mg/dL. That is high. Really high. My doctor said I was gonna have to quit the high fat diet and try going mostly vegetarian. Instead, I watched a couple of Dr. Berg videos and followed Dr. Berg's KETO/IF diet *_exactly_* as he laid it out. That meant two changes.
    1. No sugar. Period.
    2. I began eating sardines, salmon, and cod liver w/cod liver oil ( same brand that Dr. Berg eats) at least one a day sometimes twice and only had beef once a day instead of 2 or 3.
    6 months later, my triglycerides are at 133mg/dL. I don't think "stopping KETO" is an issue. I think actually *doing* REAL KETO/IF is the issue. I don't think the people who are feeling badly while "on KETO" are _actually_ "on KETO". They are cheating in some way. My eating is now VERY simple. Leafy green vegetables and cruciferous vegetables ( _probably 1/3 of that is cabbage of all kinds - especially fermented_ ) in huge amounts, mostly sautéed in EVO oil or EVC oil with garlic and onions. Sardines/salmon. Grass-fed beef/beef liver. Locally sourced eggs from pasture-raised chickens ( _about to start my own collection of hens to "grow-my-own"_ ) And nutritional yeast.
    Oh! And a 3 day fast once a month. KETO/IF works but only if you ACTUALLY DO KETO/IF. Not your own "version" of it.

    This is kind of crazy that this video came up today. Been on keto for 2 years and yesterday my husband, out of the blue, tells me I look too thin and fit and I need to start eating carbs again. He misses eating all the bad stuff with me too. That was tough to hear because here I am busting my butt on keto and exercising everyday to live a long life for him and look good for him but we wants me to stop. I’d actually thought about slowing down but not gonna totally stop. It’s too healthy for me! Maybe I’ll switch to a low carb diet.

I actually started intermittent fasting a few weeks ago and lost more weight and I think that’s the culprit. I was doing it for autophagy not for weight loss. Maybe I need to stop that for a while and see if that helps. I mean he’s right I’ve lost more weight since implementing fasting with keto. He loves me and he’s worried for me. That his triglyceride cholesterol is really high, has high blood pressure and also glucose is pretty high (what? we don’t eat the regular sugar and only put fewer berries in the home made green drink). And there’s few good things happened to us 1. increasing our immune system ( we haven’t had any cold or flu since this diet)2. no bloating after every meal. So now I don’t know what to do with this diet continue or stop.

    What’s missing in the diet debates/wars is an appreciation for seasonal changes. It looks like low-carb/keto/carnivore with lots of fasting is good for leaning out during times of scarcity, and high-carb/high-fiber grazing is good for filling up energy stores when plants are abundant.
    If you’re a summer child who has been grazing on lots if calories for a while and is obese, then winter is coming, you should fast/keto. If you’re the opposite, and run into problems (low thyroid/test/temp/etc), then start eating those carbs!

    Really good video. I'm one of those people who questions whether or not Keto is the right choice for me. I've got some mitochondrial issues and perhaps some fatty oxidation genetic issues as well. I started off 1 month as carnivore and then switched to keto and I've been over a month on keto now. I've also been doing two days a week of 24 hour fasts, 3 days a week of 16 hour fasts and then 2 days a week of no fast. I still eat a decent amount of calories, on my 16 hours (two meal a day) days I get about 1500 calories. On my 24 hour fast days its probably around 1000 calories and on my 2 regular days its about 2000 calories. After a couple months of being in ketosis, I still have issues with being dizzy/disoriented/brain fog/ weakness etc. I just don't feel well. But I love only eating two meals a day. I enjoy the food as well. I don't want to give it up but I'm not sure my body is going to really fat adapt to the point where I feel great. Another big issues is that it is nearly impossible for me to lose weight on any other diet (lifestyle).

And also, I avoid roasted nuts, because it can affect fatty acids oxidation and even fiber properties. I soaked them or eat them raw - depends on type.

After about 6 months of keto and IF, my A1C went up to 5.6 and insulin was very low. It's like my body just didn't see a need to use it any more. Weight went down to 145lb and triglycerides down in the 50's. What really blew my mind is that my fasting blood sugar would sometimes go into pre-diabetic range. I've since switched over to higher protein, moderate fat, and low carb (75 to 100 grams per day), introduced small amounts of fruit back into my diet, and i'm seeing my fasting blood sugars come back down.

      This is called physiological insulin resistance. Unlike what we think of as regular insulin resistance, where the body has been blasted so much with insulin signals that it starts to not listen anymore.
      In this case the body starts sparring blood glucose to save for the organs and tissues that really need it. A larger portion of your overall glucose stores stays available in the bloodstream. Fasting blood glucose goes up for many. The trade off is that insulin goes very low, and you aren’t fighting the extremely high spikes in blood glucose seen in high carb diets. Glucose may be elevated, but it’s stable, no dramatic bursts of both glucose and insulin happening. It’s a good trade off.

While it's physiological, I can't help but wonder if it is beginning to do damage to the endothelium. I've seen reports saying that damage begins to occur at lower glucose levels than they thought. Is this not the case if it is physiological?
