- Patternmaking Software or Adobe Illustrator? It's a personal choice that depends on your needs. This video is my personal opinion based on my needs & is only meant to aid you in your own research.
In this video I discuss 3 ways patternmaking software is better than Illustrator, which is also the 3 reasons I chose my patternmaking software over Ilustrator.
If you're unfamiliar with Illustrator, it is a graphic design software used to create drawings/sketches, designs & layouts on the computer. It can also be used for patternmaking but was not created specifically for patternmaking.
This video IS NOT to bash Illustrator, but instead to show you the advantages of a patternmaking software versus a software not specifically designed for the purpose of patternmaking.
And not just any patternmaking software will do. You need pattmaking software that will allow you to make patterns in the computer just as you would on the table with pencil & paper.
If you'd like to see how to true a dart in Illustrator or how to print a pattern piece in Illustrator, simply search right here on CZcams. I encourage you to do your own research on, not only Illustrator, but also patternmaking software other than the one I use (see below).
The patternmaking software I use is PatternMaster Boutique found at wildginger.com/patternmaster/.... The Pattern Editor is the feature in PatternMaster Boutique that allows you to create patterns on the computer, just as you would on the table with pencil & paper.

What a professional video, no fluff! Very thoughtful, and what I needed to hear today.
Thank you for your kind comments, and thanks for watching.
Very Informative. Thank you.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
The current first time buy price for Patternmaster Boutique 8 as of 7/2024, is $175. Price rolled back for early 30 yr. anniversary. Not sure how long that will last, but lots of new styles. And yes its totally possible to make projector files, - there's a tutorial in the articles how to do it by creating .pdf files.
@shelleypleger1073 Good to know. Thank you for this information.
I currently use Illustrator to alter patterns because I use a projector to cut my fabric. Do you know if this software would be able to manipulate files made in other software and if it’s useful/ more user friendly for pattern alterations ?
It's definitely more use friendly for pattern alterations, but unfortunately, there's no way to import files from another software. I've put some of my paper patterns into it, but this was more of a hack and was very time-consuming.
😢 I hope/wonder if they will consider pattern alteration software since projectors are getting more popular.
@laurahovey391 I would love to use a projector with this software. They haven't updated the software in a while, so hopefully, they're working on it.
What you meen no pc users ? I have my laptop conected to mouse and keybord can i use it ?
You can use your PC for all software I mentioned in this video. PatternMaster Boutique software only has a PC version, no MAC version. Illustrator has a Mac & PC version.
Hi, hope all is well. Could you please recommend best fashion schools we can join
Fashion schools: Fashion Institute of Technology (New York), Parsons School of Design | The New School (New York), Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (California). I'm not familiar with any fashion schools outside of the US, except for Parsons, who also has a school in Paris.
@@KatrinaKay45 thank you
I bought several of the Pattern Masters and I would love to be able to OPEN Child's Play - I can't get past the 1st screen because I don't understand the instructions. I can't find any tutorials. I am TOTALLY LOST - the learning curve on this software is off the charts.
Call or email them. I've called or emailed them several times when I was stuck, and they always got back to me. I don't have Childs Play, but if you send me a copy of the instructions, I'll see if I can help. You can email me at kay@katrinakaycreations.com.
This is how illustrator will lose customers with their silly subscription
