  • Deciding to rework a painting can often be seen as taking a backward step. But following your intuition and listening to your guiding inner voice is essential. Until you LOVE your paintings - they are not finished. In this Vlog, I talk about why I decided I had to strip the varnish off the surface and rework a painting. And how I found its final resolution.

Thanks so much for your explanation on balancing your painting. I love the choir analogy! Makes it easier to think about. What to do to a composition. ❤

I love this painting, and I’m so glad that you re-worked it!

I love the yellow color and the soft cool blue down right. These are the solos for me. Very interesting how your paintig looks when it is unframed. When do you do your black sides?

Extremely helpful. Well done, I too will be thinking in terms of soloist, background supporters etc

Love this. Been trying to step into neo expressionism and struggling with layers and composition. Can’t wait to see more.

Harmonies, subtlety, should not be drowned out by a stronger player. Something important as I look at my own work. Thanks, Judy!

Thanks Judy. That was very helpful and gives me guidance to the questions to ask myself when painting and/or if something is nagging me. Can I ask what you used to take off the varnish? The choir analogy will stick with me. Such a good one. 🙏👏👏👏👏

I use Golden Polymer waterbased varnish. To remove it I used 1:1 water and ammonia - took a lot of wiping, but eventually it came off.
