Bertrand Russell Philosophy: On Human Desire

  • I always liked Bertrand Russell because I see myself quite often in his writings.
After reading this essay (which is an abridged version of the speech he gave after winning the Nobel prize in literature in 1950), his genius became even more clear to me.
Realizing these four desires, as the main pillars, so to speak, of human motivation, can offer a lot of clarity in one’s orientation within a social ecosystem.

I recognize my internal desire for acquisitiveness and rivalry often times. In the past few years of my life, I have fought hard to maintain a self awareness of these tendencies. I work to reflect on things before I buy them or accept them. When Ifeel disdain, jealousy, or envy towards someone, I ask myself why? Where is it coming from? These feelings never go away, it feels like an eternal struggle.

I like Russell's views on Hope. Hope might seem a bit simple minded at first but his belief in it means he believes in you and me and everyone else, almost everyone anyway. He knows we got the power to work on our problems and make this thing work. He's right about that.

As an introvert, inquisitiveness is my strongest core behavior. Being “Seen” just made me uncomfortable. Guess don’t really relate to competition, very much. As a younger person, possibly, for attracting the right love interest, but that’s about it. Power. If it serves to allow my independence. Vanity.. my desire to stay, Presentable?... how do think this list of Four, compares, to “The Big Five”,... personality profile? Thank you. I enjoy these conversations.

The desires are always there. They just manifest themselves in different ways and behaviors depending on your life and relationships. Also acquisitiveness means "wanting to acquire things." It's different than inquisitiveness.

I think my greatest motivation has been acquisitive. Probably from growing up with a single mum and having little growing up. A close second would be vanity. I think I felt inadequate and tried to win approval from other people for a long time. I am not even sure if I am completely over that either.

I think homo sapiens acquired a large brain that most of them cannot drive effectivly.Like giving an F1 car to one who just got their driver's licence.

A great blunt video... loved the whole thing... I do agree with the distinctions in desires & motivations... your comment on the speech was essential... thank you only one comment that I believe that’s not a result of capitalism ... it’s just the way things r & the natural order of things
A sentence about grieving from a movie got stuck with me “we are allowed to visit them in our minds & remember all the love they gave & joy they knew” the love part is the part that got stuck and I kept thinking if I wanna remember my late brother happy I actually remember him expressing love not receiving it and that goes for my self also cuz usually I get irritated from being loved... mother naggain girlfriend all over me while am not in the mood... u get the point hopefully... then I came cross the 5 languages of love and recognized that I use to consider and maybe I still do people that speak the act of service or gifts as malevolent..
so am curious about your view on the matter and what could u come up with.. where my own believe even though a person could speak more than one language of the 5 languages of love he or SHE ;)... has only one mother tongue...
again thanks for this video... keep it up & gd luck

I very much enjoy your analysis of philosophy and psychology, however, I am curious as to whether or not you think, culture effects the outcome of said virtues. While the modern era has enabled humans to connect across various cultures, intelligence is not just as simplistic as knowledge but how various cultures place value in what knowledge should be implemented in order to assist humanity while assisting the embetterment of oneself.

    • @metamorphosis_77
      @metamorphosis_77  Před 3 lety +1

I am a firm proponent of morality = common sense. When someone is not supporting that statement they are either psychologically disturbed, or trying to serve some interests. We know what kind of knowledge serves humanity and so many philosophers and psychologists have been working on that for years. When people try to promote knowledge antithetical to this one, it's called propaganda.

    • @magnuskrow
      @magnuskrow Před 3 lety

@@metamorphosis_77 I agree with your statement but take for example the US psychiatry practitioners have valued Fruedian psychological theory of and in doing so have implemented some rather sick uses of psychological manipulation using propaganda. See Edward Bernays for further understanding of how false psychological or rather negative valued theory has been put into use. Morality and ethics have two very distinct outcomes in philosophical terms.

It’s a clear critique to our current capitalist system but, before capitalism, the means to acquire the objects of desired you mention was simply a system of a different name which operated how it could based on the historical material conditions - yet with the same desires as motives…

    THE GOSPEL
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also
ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    - 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4 KJV
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. - John 15:13 KJV
    SAVALATION
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    - John 3:16 KJV
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:17
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    - John 14:6 KJV
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Romans 5:10
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. - Isaiah 53:5
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
    - Mark 1:15 KJV
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
    - John 3:36 KJV
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. 2 Timothy 1:9
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:22
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:7-8
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. John 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
    - Romans 10:9-11 KJV
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
    - Romans 10:13 KJV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16
