  • I'm Sophie Charlotte and I have Bipolar Disorder. I'm making videos about my experience with it and subjects like the medications I have previously or am currently taking. Next on the list is venlafaxine, an SNRI antidepressant. Antidepressants and bipolar disorder can be a tricky mix. It can be harmful to some or helpful to others - I'm one of the latter. So here is my experience!
    What has your experience been?

I’m about to start this meds and from what I read the insomnia is only supposed to last 2 weeks to a month. How’s your sleep?

After trying group therapy and natural stuff and none of that had been working, my neurologist/psychiatrist (I'm from Germany), who had been promoting antidepressants since the beginning, presribed citalopram and after 2 months nothing changed besides feeling somehow sick. After that the next one was Venlafaxine. I was always against something chemical changing myself and soul. I was really afraid of losing my inner self, but I was almost incapacitated by my social anxiety, couldn't be anywhere especially the subway, bus or some social gathering without intense fear that I'm viewed and jugded at the same time.
This was when I was about 20 years old, In my youth (until about 16 years old) I was very outgoing and always had a lot of friends. At this point Venlafaxine after taking it for about 4 weeks suddenly worked wonders. Social anxiety got less, enjoying things got easier. For example trying to sleep or just sitting in a cinema seat (movin around because everything is uncomfortable). Now, almost 20 years later, I still take Venlafaxine (225mg at the moment, about 18 years 150mg).
Maybe I will take it until the end of my life. I tried to stop taking it over tapering it down to 0mg over a 6 months period. First I thougt I succeded because there were barely side effects. But three months after taking my last dose of Venlafaxine I really developed "thought spirals", my ribcage on the left side began to hurt permanently and I couldn't sleep for more than three hours per day. I read somewhere that these delayed withdrawals are slowly acknowledged in the medical field.
So I took it again. I'm thankful that these type of medications exist.
But: (I think) I'm satisfied too early. I can't get really (rightfully) angry.

@@user-ku6zs4ue9o For the love of Christ, ANY antidepressant will make you feel shit for a while, that's normal. Do some research.
