  • My shift selector rod fell out of the shifter while driving down the highway, so I decided it was time to see if I needed a new center support bearing, or worse, a new subframe to cure the acceleration clunks the car's had since I bought it. Turns out no, I just needed a 13mm socket... Smh

    When you do this maintenance, you beter replace the center support and bearing, the flex disc and also your transmission mounts. Be sure to check your cv joints, no play is allowed. If needed, replace the needle bearings in the joints, and let the drive shaft be balanced. Always bee sure to install the drive shaft in the original position, by marking the parts before you take them apart.

    I bet the threads whipping around from the bad Guibo knocked the circlip off. But still should have put in a new Guibo while in there.

    Does this cause the center console to sound like it’s clunking from inside the car, currently think I’m experiencing this problem, I have a clutch job on the way and wondering if I should just order the part now

    U prob won’t reply since this video pretty old but I got an e46 323ci and it runs smooth when accelerated slowly and normally but once you gas it more to give it speed It shakes and makes a clunk sound do you think its the same issue of the loose screw in the first part of the vid?

    Of course center bearing is good, it didnt do much there, the driveline was just secured at two points mainly the front and the end at the diff.
    I need to check mine, there is noise, wounded if this has happened to mine.

      Sorry for the late reply, didn't get a notification for your comment. Yes my problem was fixed after doing this work. I didn't actually replace the center bearing though. Just bolted it in place. One thing I didn't mention in the video is that I also tightened the driveshaft because it had been left loose.

    I got a problem in my 09 328i, and wondering if you could help me out. It makes a rumbling sound or more like a shaking sound when going 40-60 mph also noticed it kind of does it when changing gears only with that speed, I think it might be the driveshaft and hoping it’s not the transmission, also you can hear the sound in the back of the car but can also feel it in the front, I tried to explain as much as I can sorry, thanks in advance

    How bad was the vibration? I took my car to a shop for a clutch and have a vibration coming from the driveshaft kind of by the csb area except thr csb is in good shape. I wonder if they did something similar to this. The shop keeps trying to tell me it's normal since I put in an aftermarket clutch and shifter.

      Any updates on this? I’m installing an aftermarket Valeo single mass flywheel conversion kit, this changes the stock dual mass flywheel into a solid single piece and in turn will create some shudder closer to idle from what I’ve read. My question to you is by “aftermarket clutch” do you mean the flywheel was converted to single mass?

  • @stylerunner2959

    Your center support bearing was left loose which destroyed your guibo and everything else

    • @benzolot7368
      @benzolot7368  Před 6 lety +1

      I highly doubt it since the guibo was the original. Had a date stamped on it from 2001. Factory recommends you replace them every 50-75k, this one had about 160k on it. While it's possible that a center bearing could wear a guibo out, I don't think it was the case in this instance. The shift rod fell out because the snap ring holding it to the selector wasn't installed. The center bearing is in good shape which I think if it was the cause of the guibo failure, it would also be trashed.

    Ive replaced both flex disc nd center bearing and it ran fine for like 2 months nd then it started doing the same thing where it tends to shake when i floor it, ive checked the the center bearing nd flex disc nd they both look fine, and i find anything wrong. You have any idea on what it can be

    • @Ben80219
      @Ben80219 Před 5 lety +3

      First thing, Inspect all of the bushings along the drive line. Transmission, differential, suspension (including the trailing arms) and finally the rear subframe. If any of the rubber is cracked, replace the bushing. Then check your rear subframe for cracks. In '02 they Updated the subframe because of a tendency to crack under stress. If those look fine, you'll want to make sure the driveshaft is balanced. When you separate the driveshaft to do the center bearing, you have to mark it and put it back together exactly as it came apart or it'll be out of balance. If it's just barely off balance it'll seem ok for a while because the center bearing will take the brunt of the vibration until it wears the bearing out of tolerance.
      If the subframe is cracked, it can be fixed but it's a fairly big job. It's not hard, just a lot of disassembly and reassembly. The suspension, brakes, and differential all need to be swapped to a good subframe to replace the cracked one. You might get lucky and be able to weld the crack without issue but it could also crack elsewhere. If you swap it, make sure the subframe you replace it with is from an 02 or later. This is a perfect time to get new bushings for the subframe and differential. It's also a good idea to open the case of the diff to check on it's health at this time.
      If all that seems good and the problem is still elusive, rent some dyno time and watch the driveline as it vibrates. It can be a lot easier to identify if you can see it happening under the car. If the shop wont let you stick your face under the car while it's running, use a gopro or camera phone. You might even want to do this first if all of the bushings look good.
      Hopefully that helps!
