    Remember to use hard wood pellets and not pine. The pine can cause problems for the puppies/dogs. You can use wood shavings, but I think it would be messy. I have been ready several site, and one made a very good point. When the puppy pee's the pellets disintegrate and drop below the dry pellets; thus keeping the wet away from the puppies.

    I have a litter of 10 Goldendoodles. They were born May 1. It is June 25 is it too late for me to implement. I've been doing everything! I got sock of all that peeper stuff. I couldn't take it. But what I'm doing now I don't like. I took their play pin away and put all ten of them in their mother's kennel where they don't have much room to move around. So they have already learned not to poop in the kennel so what they're doing is holding their urine and sometimes we don't make it to take them in time and they still pee in the kennel but not often. I open the door and let them into the garage. However I would love to give them their big playpen back and try what you're doing but if it's not going to work I don't want to make them regress I was also thinking about putting a swimming pool filled up with those wood pellets in the garage as well help me please thank you

    How do you get them started with going to the litter box do you lead them to it or just put them in there ..

    • @AlangusAussies
      @AlangusAussies  Před 8 lety +10

      The first few days (at about 4 weeks old) I use both sides of the kennel attached, with one side being their bed and the other with litter. I spend time setting them over into the litter side and letting them find their way back to their bed. And yes, along the way, I set them in their boxes off and on with a "go potty". They learn very quickly to start going to the box themselves. By 6 weeks, you should expect few accidents outside the box and most of my puppies are 100% by 8 weeks. View earlier videos in the series for the steps to this point.

      @AlangusAussies  Před 5 lety +1

      First, if you will get him neutered early, by 8 months, he will not hike his leg and will save you some messes. And yes, some people keep their pups using a litter box long term. It works fine with a small dog.

      I have a keeper puppy from my summer litter that was litter box trained. As soon as the puppy is old enough to take outside, I start their outside training. I take them out every hour or so during the day. At night and any time I have to be away from the puppy, I keep them in their pen setup with a litter box. I do not get up with her at night. At 6 months old, my pup seldom with uses the litter box but it is available at night for her if she needs to go.

      I recently found a litter box with one low side I really like. I don’t know your breed and if larger than mine you can continue to use the pool if they can get in and out on their own. Or you can even cut an entrance on one side. I just use small stainless bowls for feeding and until they are about 6 weeks old, I free feed. Once they are a bit more mature, I move to 3 times a day. It is better to use multiple bowls or a puppy bowl else the fattest one gets fatter :). I try to be sure the smaller ones get their turn even if it means monitoring.

      Deborah Murray I started my 2 yr old yorkie using the litter box. He is using it consistently with the pads over the pellets. The pellets are big which makes him not want to walk on it. I am thinking about getting him smaller pellets which is cat pellets the same as the dog just smaller.

      April Wel just keep putting him in the box. Since he is older, and he is being consistent, remove the pad and put the pellets about 2” thick and they don’t move around as much. Personally, I would not use cat pellets. The big advantage to the equine is that they dissolve with use. For my older pups, I put them thick and only take the poop off the top. When saturated underneath, I dump the whole box and start over.
