Why the iPhone 15 is Easy to Break

- The Newest iPhone is Way Easier to Break, Even Though It's Made from Titanium.
So with your thumbs, you can break the Pro Max pretty easily. Most people find this surprising. Cuz the 15 Pro's titanium is the same that spacecraft use for missions to Mars. And it's as strong as steel, even though it's 45% lighter. But I studied engineering, so this was not a huge surprise.
Here's the 3 main reasons why. The last one
3. Strength. The grade 5 titanium has 3 times more "tensile strength" than the old aluminium. Which means it takes 3 times as much stress to cause titanium to fail. But this doesn't make the glass stronger.
2. Elasticity. The grade 5 titanium has half the elasticity. Which means titanium is easy to stretch, while having it return to the original shape. Unfortunately, glass doesn't stretch.
1. Coincidence. Conveniently, this is the first iPhone with easily replaceable back glass. Apple can get you a new one for just $200 dollars.
But still,

In my opinion the titanium isnt the problem since the one that breaks is the backglass. The problem is there's no backplate in the backglass.

On previous iPhone models (including the non-pro 15) the metal frame is on the backglass (or whatever it’s called, I forgor) but essentially since the metal frame is on the backglass it’s harder to bend or crack it, now since it needs to be easily replaceable the 15 Pro and Pro Max have it on the actual device and separated from the back, giving the back less support and making it easier to bend or crack (At least that’s what I’ve gathered from what I’ve seen so far)

Bro really just said "Last I checked, glass wasnt Titanium".
Ah yes lava breaks phones
*THE FLOOR HERE IS MADE OUT OF FLOOR*
The way he said "just 200$" 😅
In simple words: the titanium is stiffer than both aluminum and steel so it bends less. The glass, however bends more thus causing the inner part to flex inward while the edges don’t because they’re connected to the titanium frame. This causes the glass to break more easily (especially on the Pro *Max*. models).

It’s around 9-40 dollars worth of titanium, and knowing apple, it’s definitely on the lower end. Mostly used for boasting about how it’s made with titanium
If it’s pure titanium, then yeah it’ll be weak. The “oh there was titanium on the mars rover!” It’s titanium alloy. Same with gold, gold is extremely weak but when mixed with silver it’s stronger
Their is a total of 18 grams of grade 5 titanium in the iPhone. It is “sandwiched” against aluminum that mirrors the titanium’s shape. But I live in Ohio where I’ve been employed in aerospace now for over 25yrs. Titanium is widely used. Not only do satellites but the mars rover did as well. Titanium such as other alloids Is very durable under traction, but under compression a thin shell of said material could easily undergo plastic deformation.
“make a problem, sell a solution”
Making the back glass easier to replace was mainly because of (existing or impending) right-to-repair laws in certain legislations. Most engineering improvements involve a compromise, especially with a tightly integrated machine such as a smartphone.
hehe u dont get an iPhone if u want a repairable phone xD
@Alementary Because you have enough money 💰to buy a new one when the old one breaks. 🤑 I get it, having the latest iPhone is still a status symbol. My own phone 📱 is a Samsung Galaxy A13 and cost $210. It has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage capacity. I don't need more, and there's no need to spend much money on a good phone these days.
Honestly i agree with you things do come at a cost
Nuh uh
The iPhone 14 had a replaceable back and wasn't this fragile. Why? Because the 14 had part of the metal frame on the back glass while the 15 pro doesn't
@julian5857 My remarks were not specific to the iPhone 15. Right-to-repair laws have been under discussion for years and have partially been implemented in the EU and some US states.
Jerryrigeverything tested it and it was all good. Even the screen was good, well at handling scratches.

Also, it has good tensile strength, but I don't know about its strength under compression. Being strong under tension and strong under compression are very different, like with cinder blocks, where they take a lot to crush but can be pulled apart fairly easily.
What he explained in this is correct, but another thing is that the 15 pro and 15 pro max’s back glass doesn’t have the metal plate attached to it unlike the other iPhones before it, it’s attached to the back of the phone so the glass is removable. There’s really nothing supporting the back glass.
“The iPhone is way easier to break” wow it’s like all phones are gonna survive lava being poured on it

If you deliberately bang it on the floor, nobody can stop it from breaking 💀
And it is not normal to try and bend your phone
@@Skilbred_M glad someone agrees
Agreed, actually, you’re not really gonna be bending your phone like in a stress test
I kinda see it like this, there’s natural breaking like sitting on it or it slipping out of your hands, then there’s intending to break it
And then you have those incredibly strong phones that never break or get scratches landing on concrete till you limp wrist it towards your bed and miss.
Heres a better idea. DONT BREAK THE GODDAMNN PHONE

There are 3 other versions of the iPhone 15, two of which have an aluminium casing, and all 3 held up just fine. The problem only seems to be with the Pro Max version discussed in this video.
