Gordon and his Vort companion, after a lengthy journey through the Antlion-infested mines, finally near the Larval clusters, from which they hope to obtain the coveted Larval Extract. However, the Antlion Guardian, protector of the extract, is wary of their presence, stalking our heroes as they continue to close in on it. Eventually, Freeman is separated from the Vort, and must trudge through gross Grub nests and evade the angry Guardian hot on his heels if he is to have a chance to save Alyx.

Notes:
- It is impossible to kill the Guardian in the sequence shown at 3:00
- It is also impossible to outrun the Guardian in this sequence without using the Grub tunnels; Gordon runs out of Sprint eventually but the Guardian does not
- Getting hit by the Guardian will apply a neurotoxin effect on Gordon, similar to Poison Headcrabs
- The tunnel at 4:07 leads to the left pathway shown at 4:20
- The Barnacle that snags the gear at 7:16 can be killed earlier
Trivia:
- The Vort's line at 1:06 was added after Valve noticed playtesters trying to kill the Guardian (even though it is invincible in this sequence) instead of running away from it
- No matter where the Guardian is in relation to Gordon, it will always spawn behind him once he jumps into the room at 5:28
- The vorts' appearance at 11:07 mirrors their brief intervention with the G-man at the start of Episode One
- The first appearance of the G-man since Episode One's intro
- G-man's comment at 11:50 refers to Half-Life 1, where the vorts were enemies that Gordon had to fight due to them being enslaved by the Nihilanth
- G-man reveals that he saved Alyx from Black Mesa when she was still a child, at 12:06
- A recreation of the Anomalous Materials lobby from HL1 is seen at 12:06, with the G-man sitting at the reception desk
- When G-man says "naysayers" at 12:27, in reference to those who disagreed with his actions in saving Alyx, an image of Breen briefly flashes on the computer screen. As seen in HL2, Breen was quite aware of the G-man's involvement with the events of the Half-Life universe
- The map seen at 12:35 is the same one seen in Judith Mossman's coded message from Episode One, presumably located in an Arctic base
- The location at 12:49 is later visited by Gordon and Alyx once they reach White Forest. Dr. Magnusson is visibly seen on the left hand side
- G-man's request for Gordon to see Alyx safety to White Forest hits A LOT differently afte playing Half-Life: Alyx. In-depth explanation: It is revealed that, after the Vorts intervened at the start of Episode One, G-man became dissatisfied that Gordon was unable to do as he asked. Hence, the G-man formulated a plan to replace Gordon with Alyx (by putting her through a test in the form of the events of HL:A). However, he is still unable to control the events of Episode Two due to the presence of the Vorts, therefore his entire plan is contingent on Gordon protecting Alyx and ensuring that she lives to to end of Episode Two
- At 13:31, G-man mentions the phrase "Unforeseen consequences", which also happens to be the name of the third chapter in the original Half-Life, and are also the words he whispered to Eli before the Black Mesa Incident
- The last Grub of the game needed for the "Get some Grub" achievement (awarded for killing all 333 grubs in the game) is seen at 16:46

I remember around 2008 this level was broadcasted as an ad for ep.2 and I, being one of the people who was knee-deep in reading the lore of HL and still getting acquainted / planning to buy the Orange Box, was amazed by it. So many years later it still holds up! The upgraded source engine/graphics, the many environmental puzzels, the introduction of hunters / antlion guardians and the big open-air battle at the end of White Forrest. Only thing which wasn't right was the ending. Well, after HL: Alyx, Valve retconned and redeemed it. Now it all makes sense!
Yeah, I loved that they moved the setting away from the City and into the forest, it was a welcome change of environments.
I can see how the Guardian inspired the new Gonarch at Black Mesa. Running after the player at much faster speed on it's lair, throwing object at the player, punching it with it's head. If it wasn't for the long Jump, we would see a sequence of tunnel to hide from Gonarch since it is so fast.
I agree. The Guardian chase in ep2 was the first thing I thought of when I played through Gonarch's Lair in Black Mesa

At times like that Guardian hunting Freeman, it becomes raging the fact that you don't have the Long Jump module, something that i wanted A LOT in my first time playing HL2.
At least it made the encounter with the Guardian that much more tense :P
@@Sexy_Nutella It's not necessary to mention the long jump module doesn't fit at all with the whole game map design, therefore isn't necessary in any rate. This is just a comment about nostalgia of Xen playtroughs. Anyways, I always wished to HL3 having the Long jump module as an epic comeback of that tool. Hope it gets back.

I do actually, there's been a couple of hints throughout the HL2 games that suggest Alyx has a thing for Gordon. And like Eli said, they do make a pretty good team
