After taking a month off to work on setting up our new workshop, we're back with another DIY recycled plastic project for you guys. This one has been in our heads for a while and we're happy we got to finally give it a try. We made a simple bowl using two pet food bowls as a DIY mould. This worked surprisingly well once we'd had a few practice attempts at it.
Do you have any other ideas on household/readily available items that could be turned into a mould for plastic recycling? Drop any ideas down in the comments and maybe we can try some out in a future video!

Don't think it's good idea to use in something food related.

But anyway your project is very good guide for people, thanks!

You are using a knife edge when scraping after the saw trimming.
This doesn't work well because the blade edge tends to cut in.
A better tool is one with a 90deg edge. This has a flat surface that rides over the "good" plastic preventing digging in.
The tool could be up to 1/8" thick but thinner also works well.
I like to use an X-Acto knife. However, I use the back edge instead of "sharp" edge.
      Works like magic.
Wood workers have a similar tool called a "Card Scraper".

Ideas for more HDPE projects to try:
. Stringable Beads (Round, hollow and shapes)
    . Walking Cane Handles
    . Drawer Knobs
. Tiles for a Back Splash (especially how to install with adhesives)

    . Frisbee

Next time you should try freezing the bouls before you start the mold process. Plastic has to have help cooling down. Most injection modes have a water system. Plastic tends to warp when it cools down. But if you emerge it in water immediately after molded It takes its form immediately.

I wish I had the tools (and the physical ability) to make things like you do. i really like how people around the world including you guys have find ways to use trash and make stuff out of them instead of throw them and end up to landfills and god knows what will happen to them and how will the compose, i mean especially plastic can last 500 years imagine making a house out of it,

I really wouldn't be to worried about food contact if you collect your plastic yourself. Just don't use motoroil cans and stuff like that.
Our food is touched by hdpe all the time and most of it comes from food packaging anyway. And from shampoo bottles etc. Also not really toxic.
Just wash it properly before and once it is done and don't use plastic that had toxic stuff in it and personally i would have no issues eating from such a bowl.

I was just thinking about this while bagging up grocery and other shopping bags. The melting point of polyethylene is around 114 to 128 C but I do remember making similar projects in the 1990's around 145 to 155 C which made the material far too sticky for practical consideration of future prospects as an artist and now also engineer. Tomorrow, I will try a marble/Damascus knife or short sword using our shopping bags. I expect delamination but love learning from my failures. I also intend to make beads and maybe even shoes and boots. Thank you for doing some of the maths for me/us, it cuts my/our time down. Best of wishes to you and yours.

My biggest question then is where to source the needed (used) HDPE lids? It would take our small household decades to collect enough for a handful of small bowls.

I'm imagining a Bespoke HDPE Plastics buffet, where there are shavings of various colours to choose from so you can make your own mix from what's currently available, and then you bring it to the end, and pick from one of four or so simple items (plectrum, coaster, clipboard, tumbler/bowl sorta things), and then it's melted and extruded into your shape for you. That would be so nifty as a step-by-step makerspace sort of experience, and give folks who'd never get up the motivation to do it on their own an opportunity to do what you fellas are doing!

@brothersmake do you guys have a book or pdf that details what plastics and tools you use? And can you use any other plastics beside the bottle caps?

Hi ! Thanks for your work and sharing ! I have question for the sillicone things you use on the toaster. It's special sillicone or I can use recycling baking sillicone ?

With all that you guys can do. I was wondering if you can use clear plastic bottles to make window panes ? Might sound dumb but Hey why not.

Have you guys tried using an air fryer for melting plastic? I'm curious if that would work.
