After taking a month off to work on setting up our new workshop, we're back with another DIY recycled plastic project for you guys. This one has been in our heads for a while and we're happy we got to finally give it a try. We made a simple bowl using two pet food bowls as a DIY mould. This worked surprisingly well once we'd had a few practice attempts at it.
Do you have any other ideas on household/readily available items that could be turned into a mould for plastic recycling? Drop any ideas down in the comments and maybe we can try some out in a future video!

Don't think it's good idea to use in something food related.
Better in building.
But anyway your project is very good guide for people, thanks!
You are using a knife edge when scraping after the saw trimming.
This doesn't work well because the blade edge tends to cut in.
A better tool is one with a 90deg edge. This has a flat surface that rides over the "good" plastic preventing digging in.
The tool could be up to 1/8" thick but thinner also works well.
I like to use an X-Acto knife. However, I use the back edge instead of "sharp" edge.
Works like magic.
Wood workers have a similar tool called a "Card Scraper".

what is your measurement for your blank mold??
What material is black cloth made of?

You know, this seems like an easy way to make DIY plant pots for those of us who don't have the mold you two used. I may well try this out myself. Thanks a load.

Ideas for more HDPE projects to try:
. Stringable Beads (Round, hollow and shapes)
. Walking Cane Handles
. Drawer Knobs
. Tiles for a Back Splash (especially how to install with adhesives)
. Kids Toys
. Frisbee
. Bath time kids toys (like floating ducks and little boats)
Yes I would like to see some of these !good idea ! Thankyou
Really great ideas!
We actually have drawer knobs and beads coming onto our online shop in a month or two. We currently sell mini frisbees also :) Love the other ideas too!
www.brothersmake.com/shop
These are great ideas ! I'd love a cane made like the green bowl. It would look great !
I'll propose something ambitious: what about a drum kit?
@@shonevarz6540 Speaking of instruments, what about instument cases?
Next time you should try freezing the bouls before you start the mold process. Plastic has to have help cooling down. Most injection modes have a water system. Plastic tends to warp when it cools down. But if you emerge it in water immediately after molded It takes its form immediately.
Not exactly. Just makes warp faster
Valeu pela dica!!!!
I really appreciate that you guys are willing to try new things and to make some mistakes and share those mistakes! It's so helpful for people who are just starting out. I hope more people get into crafting with recycled plastic.
I've just discovered this channel and have been binge-watching it all evening. You guys are amazing! I love your personalities, and the things you make WHILE saving the planet are incredible! I wish I had the tools (and the physical ability) to make things like you do. I've made little wallets and other small items out of plastic bags from the grocery by ironing them into a "fabric", but that's about it. I also cut plastic bags into strips and crochet with them. Thank you so much for all that you do!!!
Same lol. I'm getting into making custom controllers and was looking for fun material to work with and I'm sure this is gonna be fruitful for me
This simply beats the pots video you made about 11 months ago. This means us laymen can now start to recycle. I'm trying this out !!! Thanks bros.
I've been collecting caps and thought I'd start with a keyring but those plant pots you have look amazing! I'm gonna need more caps!
Happy to see you guys back!
now that was very nice AND useful at the same time,
also of course you guys whatever you had made so far is for homes and useful at the same time,
i really like how people around the world including you guys have find ways to use trash and make stuff out of them instead of throw them and end up to landfills and god knows what will happen to them and how will the compose, i mean especially plastic can last 500 years imagine making a house out of it,
anyways wonderful video as always and it also helps me with a project about a video game im making.
Love that beautiful bowl you made
Guys, you are the GOAT. It's really cool what are you doing!
Genial! Parabéns! Ficou incrível!
Great that you’re back and the new studio looks ace! Do miss the jump to camera ‘let’s make a…’. Look forward to what you can now make in the new space
You know, it does look a bit like molten hard candy. I wonder if any tools or skills of that trade might prove useful or at least interesting for future projects.
Like a drop candy roller. Or maybe try to folding plastic like those artistan hard candy from Japan "Kintaro-ame"
Dang!! I want to make one of those so badly now. Just for the morning cereals! Great project and video bros. Cheers!
You definitely should!!
Greetings from Turkey. Recycled plastic may not be suitable for food contact. Make sure the plastic you recycle is 100% clean. Have a great day. #precious_plastic_turkey
You definitely should not use for food unless you don't care about food/health safety or are absolutely sure it's safe.
I really wouldn't be to worried about food contact if you collect your plastic yourself. Just don't use motoroil cans and stuff like that.
Our food is touched by hdpe all the time and most of it comes from food packaging anyway. And from shampoo bottles etc. Also not really toxic.
Just wash it properly before and once it is done and don't use plastic that had toxic stuff in it and personally i would have no issues eating from such a bowl.
If you are using milk bottle caps or other plastic that was previously used with food, it would be alright.
Mother Earth needs more people than you☝️😊 Great Ideas and I have a lot of fun watching your Videos😁 Greetings from Bavaria😘💞
Hey man, Mother Earth wanted plastic but couldn't make it herself, so she first made humans to make it for her.
Truly cool ,great upcycle idea.
Just made my first set of coasters ❤
I was just thinking about this while bagging up grocery and other shopping bags. The melting point of polyethylene is around 114 to 128 C but I do remember making similar projects in the 1990's around 145 to 155 C which made the material far too sticky for practical consideration of future prospects as an artist and now also engineer. Tomorrow, I will try a marble/Damascus knife or short sword using our shopping bags. I expect delamination but love learning from my failures. I also intend to make beads and maybe even shoes and boots. Thank you for doing some of the maths for me/us, it cuts my/our time down. Best of wishes to you and yours.
Subscribed, forgot to mention. Also, thank you again.
This sounds awesome man, let us know how you get on! Best of luck ♻️
This is an excellent idea...... you're really onto something!
Love you guys, great job 👏👏👏
Your videos are always fun & interesting. This bowl looks like one of those little party hats people wear for St. Patrick's day celebrations.
Thanks so much! Haha it does now you mention it - we'll be sure to use it this St Patrick's day!
Definitely gonna give this a go. 👍
You just have us a job
Thanks guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️from Ghana northern Region Dagbon Kingdom west Africa Tamale ..
This project is very good!
you guys make it a lot of simple, great job and nice video!
Thanks Daffa!
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Hope to try it out someday. (Hope soon). Blessings and greetings from

The green one is really beautiful, it looks like malachite or however its written
Very cool my friend! We filmed a plastic documentary in Mexico and saw a similar process in action… was amazing!
Love it keep up the great work - I have saved some tops and want to give it a try soon 👍👌
Ive deen ur stuff b4. Im glad this one came up when i was googling alternative bowl mold, cheap bowl mold im finding stuff well over $1000
I'm glade you guys made this video. Thank you
Glad
Wow, that's great. I wanted to build wheels for my TV table. The reality is often we don't know where to get these thinks outside of really great imports. Great video.
You know, you guys are the real brothers......double thumbs up👍
Thanks! 👍🏽👍🏽
fill the inside bowl with concrete and make a wood frame for the outside bowl and fill the outside around with concrete ,place a couple spacers for the press that the press cant go deeper and you have a strong mould and always the same wall thickness
Could you make your own storage bins?
I love seeing items in your shop that you made yourself
ive been thinking about doing this too, a thick-ish crate for records, or books would be great.
Love this. Need to start keeping plastic caps from all of our litter projects to be able make these.

This is amazing! Thanks
The ball looked amazing in the slow motion 😊
Thank you for this beautiful video
Dealing with plastics, molds, pressing and vacuum forms it helps with detail to warm the mold or item you're using. Plastic cool and harden very quickly when they come in contact with a cooler surface
Amazing work, great brothers
Wow the first time i see melting plastic,it looks great ,i subscribed, liked and hit the bell button ,good luck from Canada.
Love this! going to try it out tomorrow
I really love what you guys please I’ll like to see more on your page ❤
Song choices phenomenal fellas
Excelente!!!!!!! Saludos desde Colombia, me gustan sus videos y aqui en mi pais ya empece una copia de sus ideas un abrazo!!!!!!
Nice work Chaps 👍🏻
Lovely,thanks
You guys should try doing this for flower pots. I've been trying to figure it out for months
Heck yeah
Thanks bros...👍❤️🤛👊🍻
Bowls are great for storage, but boxes would provide a more efficient and safe storage solution, especially with the use of hinges and latches for locks. Maybe with a semi-clear top so one can see the contents.
I love that idea!
Cool idea, have you ever thought of trying plastic gnomes for the garden? I don't know how well plastic would release from gnome moulds but I'm gong to try some of my e-waste ones soon. Are there any products you guys can melt that give you the clear plastic easily that us lay folk can try lol!? I much prefer the idea of using clear recycled plastic than resin that's for sure, suits the recycling ethos much better! ! Nice video!
Bloody brilliant!
😘
Me gusta tu trabajo está muy bonito los felicito
I absolutely adore this idea! These would perhaps be great items to make in different sizes and color schemes to donate to local pet shelters or as part of pet adoption gift bags. My biggest question then is where to source the needed (used) HDPE lids? It would take our small household decades to collect enough for a handful of small bowls.
Speak to friends and the neighbours you know well enough. I'm sure most people would be happy to save you all their bottle lids.
The Plastic is so Easily obtained ! From The ! S.m s !.I've THROWN ! that much ! Of it ! Away ! Over the years !! That l didn't think !. Could ever be Recycled ! For Better Use ! !
OR to donate to homeless ppl . Make it with a tab for a strap to go through so the person could hook it to their belt or cart or whatever.
Also, LOOKon the ground. SO MANY PLASTIC BOTTLES BEING THROWN OUT OF CARD PASSING BY. USE their discarded waste. Go to beaches after Spring break. You will have so many bottle cap you wnon't know what to do with them all!
Because you show us that you tried an till you got it perfect.....I will follow an share your channel....
Thank you.
Now is this bowl food safe?
Since the bowl was made with bottle caps which is HDPE than yes it is and it’s dishwasher safe as well.
Thanks for the great videos!!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching
Nice job Bros.
Wow amazing
Amazing
I wish if someone can help start such business ... this is really a good idea .. bless you
Impressive !
Excellent excellent excellent
This is cool
I'm imagining a Bespoke HDPE Plastics buffet, where there are shavings of various colours to choose from so you can make your own mix from what's currently available, and then you bring it to the end, and pick from one of four or so simple items (plectrum, coaster, clipboard, tumbler/bowl sorta things), and then it's melted and extruded into your shape for you. That would be so nifty as a step-by-step makerspace sort of experience, and give folks who'd never get up the motivation to do it on their own an opportunity to do what you fellas are doing!
As for additional ideas for things to make-- what about taller tumblers, perhaps ones that would fit in your drinks holder? I've steel tumblers, I'd imagine those would make good moulds.
We have plans to open up our workshop to education groups and do something almost exactly like this! Fabulous ideas 😁😁
Thank you so much for your useful videos! I was wondering if I can do this with other types of plastic, for example plastic wraps and packaging that are unlabeled so Idk what material that is? For me they are most easy to collect as unfortunately they can be found everywhere and all you can do is dispose or reuse them for little amount of times
Wonderful
Hello whats the name of black sheet is that?
отличная идея, так можно горшки для цветов делать)
Bravo les gars
Wow!
I really like this project, i also a kind of person with such skill for doing many experiment but only luck a support and materials
I haven't been getting notifications of all your videos and so I've not been around much since the beginning. I loved your presentation style then, and maybe Skillshare has helped you, but you always looked good to me! I don't recall your 'bad' clip... I think you made that up 🤭 Love the green bowl. That's do-able for newbies I think.
Impressive... top notch
Thanks!
Nice Recycle~
Nice job 🤝
Wow, that is interesting! Now a new subscriber
I am from India and I like your recycling
Beautifull love
Wow amazing! Thank you. Done Subscribe
Paella pan / wok, to make large dishes or even a shield
New Subscriber here. Thanks for this video. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks! Great to have you 👍🏼
Hi guys , you are making a wonderful job . I"m very interesting In recycling l live in Namibia
Félicitations les brothers
Wow that's very good. Pls I want to learn how to mold plastic boxes. I am interested. Thanks
I think if you made car bumbers, they would outlast all the chipped up and cracked ones on every new car. Hemp plastic would be best. I like the imperfections in projects. Good job guys!
@brothersmake do you guys have a book or pdf that details what plastics and tools you use? And can you use any other plastics beside the bottle caps?
Hi ! Thanks for your work and sharing ! I have question for the sillicone things you use on the toaster. It's special sillicone or I can use recycling baking sillicone ?
Thank you boss
With all that you guys can do. I was wondering if you can use clear plastic bottles to make window panes ? Might sound dumb but Hey why not.
Would love to see what you guys could do at making a diy hydrophonic garden using plastic bottles.
Saya berfikir akan membuat sesuatu dari ide anda ini, salut, sangat bermanfaat.👍🙏
Excelentes ideias
Thank you!
Amei vou fazer
Have you guys tried using an air fryer for melting plastic? I'm curious if that would work.
