      @@ghost085They haven't. Consoles are really close to pc in terms of architectures and power (at least mid-rante PCs) so it's easier to upgrade graphics for the PC version. In the Xbox/PS2 era games weren't made for consoles, they developed the big (PC) version and then downscaled to console level. That's the reason PC games were so many leagues beyond console versions. Downscaling allows to have a perfect version in every machine but requires to remove features that many times are too vital in the game code and it becomes a nightmare to port to lower machines. Programing for console and then upscaling makes it much easier but upscaling is impossible to reach PC's top quality as the game core has its limits.

      @@ghost085 Ubisoft and EA do get a lot of shit on the PC but over the last few years, probably with the start of this gen of consoles, their ports of games on the PC are a lot better than they used to be but they still take a lot of shit because both of them are still greedy, especially on dlc contents.
      I'm sure I also heard that both companies make more money on the PC then consoles thanks to them having their own store fronts.

    Technically the DLC missions for the xbox version can also be obtained from the "Rainbow Six 3 Companion Disc", a promo disc that had a demo of Rainbow Six 3 and the DLC for Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell. Obviously it's little more than a curiosity today, but I'm a pedant so I felt it was worth pointing out.

    Cool video, but did you notice that currently on Pc it's impossible to get the same shadow quality as the Xbox version?
    The reason is "Stencil Shadows" The two first Splinter Cell used an exclusive feature on PC and Xbox at the time called "Hardware accelerated Stencil Shadows". It was a feature baked at the hardware level on geforce 4, 5 and maybe one more generation after that. It was then replace by more efficient solutions on a software level. The consequence is that support for Stencil Shadows was dropped and with somewhat recent hardware you cannot have all the Stencil shadows properly working on PC. it's also absent from the following remasters of the game.
    So the only way to get all the eye candy regarding lighting and shadows is to play the game on the original Xbox. I thought it was a fun little anecdote ^^

    • @Antheology2012
      @Antheology2012 Před 5 lety +9

      You can get the shadows working with this, and pandora tomorrow using a program called dgvoodoo2. The instructions are on the pcgamingwiki.

      Actually SC on Xbox and PC use Nvidias proprietary Shadow Buffer technique which is not the same as stencil buffer shadows. But you re correct that this feature was baked i to to the Xbox and the GeForce 3 PC graphics cards of the time. The Gamecube also supporter shadow mapping in hardware but few developers used it.

    6:32 that chicken design is inspired by a Quebec bbq chicken restaurant chain called St-Hubert.
    One thing I especially liked about the Xbox version is the bonus video features where they interviewed developers as well as some of the in-game characters inside the Montreal Ubisoft offices. It really ads a fun, human touch that makes you understand and appreciate the game more. In one of the videos, you see a random employee walking in the background, unaware they're filming, notice the camera, mouth the word "Tabarnak" (fuck) and walk away.

    cool video, I remember when the PS2 port was launched everyone was impressed that the game was possible on the PS2, but, some screenshots made clear that it was a significant downgrade... also, the Gamecube version looks like a victim of the PS2 version, and the level design changes are due to memory limitation and nothing else for the most part....

      PS2 version a hybrid of Xbox and Gamecube. The game got a bit butchered to make it run. Gamecube version was a custom build of the game specific for the console, and it was much better than PS2. Slightly altered story and levels, but it works, looks, and runs much better than PS2. Neither are as good as the Xbox, but if you want a copy of it and don't have PC or Xbox, Gamecube is definitely the better choice.

      Captain Night
      Xbox wasn't a port. It was the original version. But yes, you are right, Gamecube was 60FPS while Xbox was 30FPS. Overall though, Xbox blows it away. PS2 however, is by far the worst. It has a few features from the Xbox but uses Gamecube level layouts. The levels changed weren't as well thought out as the Gamecube version. Bad loading spots, different quick save areas, controls, etc. It also had muddy graphics and it had bad framerate issues. Gamecube was a much better port, and fixed some of the PS2's issues and ran and looked a lot better. The fact that Gamecube was an enhanced port of the PS2 version was advertised at the time. The devs themselves said it was the better version.

    4:24 Total speculation here but I would assume the change from a ledge jump to having to use the pipe to get across would have something to do with ram management. Maybe using the pipe gives the game a prompt to get rid of previous level data and load in new data as the PS2 and GC only had 32mb of ram vs XBOX's 64mb (if I'm remembering correctly)

    • @albertmas3752
      @albertmas3752 Před 4 lety +5

      That's correct...partly. PS2 & GC's 32MiB RAM were the common RAM we use today (32MiB for CPU, other memory for GPU, another memory for sound...those consoles had much more than those 32 MiB). Xbox had 64MiB but it was all unified RAM so all components shared that memory. Programmers could decide how much of that RAM would be used by each component. Sometimes CPU might use 50MiB leaving just 14 for video and audio, other games could use just 20 for CPU and those spare 44MiB could be used by video and audio.

    It was games like splinter cell, Halo, Project Gotham Racing etc that make the first Xbox really distinct from the other two consoles. Infact, all 3 consoles were very distinct from each other. It was a great generation for gaming because each system catered to a different style of gamer, and had exclusives that suited the console. Whereas today, the idea of exclusive games have gone out the window and its now a "play every game on any device" mentality, which is very boring and done soley for profit. Back then, if you could only afford 1 games console, you had to REALLY think about which one was best for you in the long term because they each offered a different experience. RE splinter cell, first time I played it was from a PC Magazine demo disc in 2002. My PC was running a Geforce FX 5700LE and a 2.4ghz Pentium 4 and I remember struggling to max the settings at 1280x1024 on my CRT monitor. The game looked REALLY good back then, and to be honest, sharpened up in HD it still looks great today.

    This video is great but the biggest differences on PS2 imo is the obvious inclusion of Nuclear Power Plant (but that's an exclusive level so doesn't make sense for this comparison of course) but the Presidential Palace also has an entirely different first section on PS2/GC and one room's layout was mirrored for whatever reason even though the few rooms before it were more or less the same basic layout.
    Anyway, I would love seeing a video that did a deep dive into all the little & big differences -- the exclusive level on PS2, the exclusive levels on Xbox/PC, the completely overhauled cutscenes, the death of a certain character being a bit different, the added dialogue in certain spots, etc.. You could probably get away with just playing PC & PS2 rather than playing all 4 versions again. Even weirder is that the PAL version of PS2 has a difference in Nuclear Power Plant in that the final section has another bit of unique music added to it where it's otherwise silent on the NTSC version though that's the only NTSC vs PAL difference I'm aware of.
    Would be really cool to see that! But maybe that's just me lol

    Small detail you missed (I think) but on the PS2 on the first level or any level fire, there is a heat wave effect moving off of the fire to give it that hot temperature feeling. That wasn't added on PC or XBOX. Doesn't make the game any better just an interesting bit of info.

    I never understood how consoles worked out all of these discrepancies. Splinter Cell always looked better on Xbox, but MGS3 and RE4 looked as good as any of their contemporaries on Xbox, and GoW2 was pushing the limits of the PS2 in 2007. There's also Gran Turismo 4, which certainly was no slacker in the looks department.
    Idk if it's just the certain details like AA and lighting that are just done better on Xbox compared to Playstation 2, or if the devs for those aforementioned PS2 games were truly working their asses off to push the console to their absolute limit.

      The PC version of Splinter Cell DID have the same shadows as the X-Box version, but they don't work on modern hardware. As such the PC version currently uses a simpler form of shadows as a fallback.
      There is a fix for the shadow issue though in the form of dgVoodoo2. It effectively emulates the hardware features needed for Splinter Cell's high-end shadows to render.
