I have had a GameStop pro membership for 2 years now, and I buy at least one physical game every month from them every month with my $5 pro coupon.

I used to do that. But I would aim to buy like a $10 game just to spend only $5 and realized I’m just buying a bunch of cheap games that I’ll never really play. Then I would convert it to $5 digital currency but they stopped that too. I think moving forward I’m gonna pass on the GameStop membership because I work for Best Buy and get discounts on games there. If I ever don’t work there, maybe I’ll go back to GameStop for the $5 a month.

GameStop doesn't care about collectors at all. I ordered 5 "new" games from them and 4/5 weren't even sealed. The one switch game I ordered didn't even come with a case. They have done it for years

It’s happened to me a couple of times. This needs to change otherwise no one will trust GameSrop ever. I mean I don’t trust them to send me a “new” game anymore unless it just came out then it’s most likely what you will come to expect other than a “new” game in a GameStop case.

I would be cool with digital media only if it was $15-$20 cheaper to buy so. But to pay same price is cray-Z.. like Alan wake 2 was $59 instead of $70. Cool. But I love shopping physically but when it’s hard to get ugh sometimes digital convenience is nice but if the game sucks I can’t sell it lol

I tried buying a new game from GameStop, it wasn't new anymore after they opened it. Then they wouldn't discount it. And they put that stupid sticker on all the game cases. I don't buy games from them anymore.

I didn’t know that Walmart is going to stop selling phisical games next year. That a shame. I live in Puerto Rico and down here Walmart is the easiest way to get phisical games. We only have 1 Best Buy store on the island and game stop left PR almost 10 years ago. Even we have some local game stores, they’re are mostly in the San Juan area and some time they even more expensive then Walmart. I guess I’ll be shopping a lot more on Amazon for games from now on

I get really lucky there. Last week, I found a gamestop card in my old wallet with $48 from trade ins on it. Also had $20 in points and my $5 off for the month. I found a sealed copy of xenoblade 2, a used copy of nurse love obsession, new copy of tales of vesperia, and Octopath 1 & 2 and I got it all for like $55. All on the switch. Gamestop comes through sometimes!!

With physical media going away Gamestop has the perfect opportunity to future proof there business. They need to start getting more selective on games they take paying more for cond, cib, etc. and pay less for cart only or games in poor condition. I stopped at a local Gamestop they had a shoebox with about 20 cart only 3ds games that were priced the same as they were cib.

They gotta fix their “new” game policy. Because they do it a 1000 times a day. Sell an opened game to a customer at the full MSRP retail new price. They do it online, they do it in the store. And it’s company policy. It’s “new” because they say it’s new.

Excellent points! One of my local GameStop guys was taking risks on retro trade ins for the last year or so and he said they are back out the door within a few hours every time.
This also kinda feels like when TRU went out of business. Even though that was a raw deal overall they dipped right before the massive collectible boom we’ve had in the last 5yrs. Which is why places like Best Buy has so many more collectibles now.

Treat your retro physical games like gold and keep them well conditioned. As these stores close out their physical media sales, retro collecting is just going to sky rocket, big time.
Walmart and Bestbuy are making huge mistakes with this. People thought books and VHS would totally die out, but physical medias from those generations are coming back as huge collector's markets already. More and more people are waking up to the positives of owning things in real time instead of everything being digital and easily manipulated or downright erased on you.
We're going into a very interested yet possibly scary time for us media collectors. Let's see what happens.

I’ll throw my two cents in as someone who worked nearly 7 years at gamestop. I never really had any proper training on counterfeit games, but I know some of the things to check for such as print quality and the casing on the cartridge, albeit those were things I learned on my own time. Most employees probably also don’t stay on long enough to learn some of that info seeing as pay, hours, and responsibilities are all out of whack for it to be a job where people want to stay long term. On the point of gamestop being the way forward for physical games, I think it may head that way, but I’d doubt there will be as many locations as there are now. Gamestop needs to focus up on what it wants to be as well since you all probably can see the sheer volume of “not games” we have. I do like them having things like statues and trading cards, but the ratios on games to collectibles is pretty skewed. But, the idea of them being the last big retailer for physical could be a decent way to keep it kicking around longer. Anyway, I’ve got more well formed thoughts somewhere in my head, but this is kind of wordy for a YT comment lol. Either way though, I love the content you guys make, and always look forward to your next videos. :)

I live in the country, internet is not an option. I have to bring my systems somewhere in order to update. Digital? We need a better internet everywhere first. Storage has always been hard. Have to have multiple external hard drives. I feel they need to get back to storage on the game physically. I don’t do digital. If it goes that way I’ll go deaper into retro. Seems they also limit quantities of games for pre orders in order to push digital. So how can they say there aren’t enough sales physically if they don’t have the availability, of course digital would be higher. I haven’t bought any systems that are online only or any games that require internet in order to play them.

@@JRPGLife I work at a Best Buy and we just remodeled the video game section and shrank it. The aisles were huge and always empty. Partially due to employees not stocking the games because many of them required security cases. Now they’re half the size but much more presentable and manageable/easier to keep up with. I highly doubt Best Buy eliminates physical games ever. With movies there’s so many streaming services and alternatives to watch everything. You have 10-20 different services you can subscribe to. With video games, there’s only 3. PS Plus, Game Pass and Switch online. And neither is all inclusive, so you only get the games for that company. Whereas like, Netflix, includes a wide variety of movies. So until they make a subscription service where you can get every game at your fingertips (even Steam doesn’t provide that i.e. no Nintendo games,) I don’t think they’ll ever fully eliminate physical games anywhere.

The big electronics retailers are the only ones selling physical media, and one of them (Elkjøp) even have a 10% discount on all new physical games. So its basically the opposite of whats going on in the US it seems

I worry that stores won’t have the opportunity to save collectors because there won’t be physical options on consoles. We know Microsoft doesn’t care about physical games and Sony will follow. I agree, as much as i dislike thier policies over the years(i really wish gameXchange was more regularly available as i feel like they are what gamestop should have become instead of walls of funkos but theres way too few locations) i feel once gamestop goes that will start a rapid spiral of games not bothering with physical. So i feel they are a necessary evil as i love going to random hole in the wall stores finding that one obscure game that never goes down in price(i recently scored a copy of summon night 6 for ps4 in that has a few dings in the case but the disc is in great shape for 22$ at a peddlers mall in Louisville. A game that literally never went on sale digitally and is now delisted on ps4 sou your only option is either snag the vita version that somehow is still up or pay a ton for a physical copy) and if gamestop goes good luck trying to find that atelier neptunia game a month after release and the game stores we have left will get greedy and charge 90$ or more a year down the line.

I REALLY dont like the idea of all our games being digital only.. when theyre digital like that you dont really own them.. like take the eshop, lets say something happened to your system or your account. youll never be able to get the games you bought back. same with any digital storefront really. if you lost your account info, or it got hacked or if one of the companies decide to shut down the digital store front, how would you get your games that you paid for?

I don't think that game developers will produce physical games for GameStop if they are the only one's left. It won't be worth it to produce the small amount for just GameStop. I am a physical game collector as well and will certainly miss physical games when they're not being produced anymore. I'm worried about the hard drive space issue as well. They need to certainly make it easier to add external hard drives to future game systems. I really hope they go away from system specific hard drives as well. We will have to see what happens. It all seems to be happening too quick.

My son is 19 and he prefers physical media. He likes to see it on his shelf and he likes the guarantee that he wont loose it if something happens to his account or system. He has been working lately to get his favorite movies on DVD and albums on records or cds because he wants the gaurantee of being able to have it. For him digital is unpredictable and vulnerable.

Best buy said movies and Walmart said Xbox games, but probably is just a matter of time before Best Buy and Walmart stop selling games in general. But we should be good with physical games at least for the rest of this generation. Probably will be sooner for Xbox to get rid of physical games but with PS and Nintendo, well that is considering if Nintendo doesn't start doing it with its next console we should be good for a while. PS is literally coming out with a slim with a detachable disk drive which wouldnt make too much sense if they werent going to keep making physical games. Going into the next gen of consoles im not too sure about.

If Gamestop wants to recover their reputation they need a CEO that will take this seriously. Someone who specifically knows and understands the gaming world and collectors! They need a training program for employees that is universal between stores. They need to STOP selling games as NEW and they arrive unsealed. That pisses me off most of all! I want the @#$% earned privilege of opening , or not, that game. Am I right? I have a personal *itch about them too. Bought my first collectable statuette. It was on clearance, so figured wtf. It arrived broken. They refused to do anything about it. So I got angry and demanded help from higher up the food chain. Got another email asking questions and for pictures. Sent it off. NEVER heard back. Not one word. SMH Bad business practices don't make me want to do business with @gamestop much anymore 😢 They need to greatly step up customer service.

100%. Gamestop has a massive opportunity here. They are incompetent but they could turn it around. Systems still need to be sold. They can be the last remaining brick and mortar selling them. They could partner with publishers like limited run games, super rare etc for more niche titles. They could focus more on collectores less on just the call of duty crowd. There is a lot of potnetial there. And if the rest of the competition fails... its all up for grabs.

  • @Jawwaad1111
    @Jawwaad1111 Před 9 měsíci

Once physical games are done for good and digital is the only way to go, more companies like Limited Run Games, Strictly Limited Games and, Super Rare games are going to pop up. I wouldn’t doubt that GameStop starts getting games printed also like they did with Xenoblade on the Wii. The one thing about GameStop is that they don’t care about the collectors as they will list a game as new on the website but once you receive it, it will be in a generic case or sleeve with a sticker on it that says NEW. GameStop has definitely had some shady practices in the past and continue to sell opened games as new so I wouldn’t trust them as being the savior for collectors.

It's interesting to think about. Besides Disney not in my region it is a thought of oh Sony/others in the Blu ray alliance and such stop is when physical media really stops and will be scary. So if we have collectors editions sure.
Yeah big games I wonder. While the servers got people going again will my sealed copy of BF3 matter probably not. Will my sealed Blu ray of an anime. Or manga. Nope not likely.
Factory resets ah. Whether physical digital, whether memory cards/hard drives what saves, what game installs from profiles. Ah the possibilities. Account systems.
I wonder about death. I think wills can be worked for that or account access from others but still scary stuff there too no one really talks about accounts and death.
Disk drives hmm if encryption/online like the PS5 one that's separate grr.
Hard drive space is going to duck some 2 disk games already exist it wasn't as common on PS4 let alone the yep rush it. Storage versus whatever makers and external drives. 1.0 versions are rare even. I only have a few PS4, Vita, Switch, Xbox One and such that do.
$100 for me already so $150 for me would be too much. I already buy $50 or cheaper as it is. Even AAs or Indies at launch $50 is great.
I think if youtubers do it's likely a younger gen will care or the second youngest gens doing the messaging. I fit the gen for 5-7th gen games so my gen cares but a small group of us likely. If the Scott the Wozs and more do it's something. I watch them I see a fair amount of similar age and mentality as well matters. I loved console gaming since 4 years old I've played flash/mobile games and know of the quality I don't play them anymore more to emu or music playback on my phone then anything or carry a handheld. I know the differences. Besides so many Gen X collector channels or Baby Boomer are great with their messaging as well. The young gen games get off storefronts so much they care about games so it's unlikely.
I think most times we know enough about games, repros no clue but niche stuff nah most times us knowledgeable we know more than the mainstream sales they want.
I see the odd Rocket League and go yep it had a standard edition disk. But Fortnite nope digital physical. Do they care for in person maybe? I mean if with a parent they likely do. If parents aren't into gaming for sure.
But otherwise no idea. That's the best I can answer besides my generation pushing younger to go hey these PS4/Xbox One might be your oldest. Or this and that of physical. What backwards compatibility even is and if they care.
I do wonder. Messaging or physical. What's easier, what's known to each person and a small group that cares besides the next trend all the time.
What phone apps/games survive and get archived/BlueStacks emulated too.
I get PS3/360 and others for $5, Skyward Sword Wii or other exceptions for $100 (nope glad got it $20 digital Wii U eshop when HD came out) or around a few $20+. Burnout 3 for $32. It varies at least for my prices, anything they know is notable. Of Nintendo games, Star Wars 6th gen games (Xbox OG of my reference which as Xbox OG are usually cheap). Whatever particular titles. GameCube of course does. So been interesting seeing a few stores to compare.
But a Gameboy for $300/400+ (games around $60+ I think maybe $30 range who knows for batteries) or SNES for $200+ hmm. Master System 2 can't remember but who has an RF TV anymore? I don't even know what the RF or PAL situation is for old consoles of that age cable connections. Atari2600 glad for the collections modern same with 5200/7800 Lynx and Jaguar would be cool but glad Atari 50 exists for those I see the Lynx box never seen the handheld IRL. But it's cool in research. XD
Getting $3 of Infamous Second Son and First Light $18 at EB Games..... Hmmmm I'm used to it though for varied prices of such. Between EB and 2 retro game stores (well used and other objects of tech, laptops, movies /tv shows, engineering and more so not completely but good enough for me).
But yeah if movie studios, game publishers, music studios, if limited run or others can't. EB/Gamestop is something but who knows how long besides games that cycle like retro game stores used as the only things then NEW.
I go to EB if I have to for specific stuff especially anime games they have many of the AA stuff I need that major stores with games and other items don't have so I need EB to exist for those even besides the odd big stuff. But particular anime games (the non mainstream kind I mean that's why so worried as anything that's even under surface level becomes questionable if it gets a Part 1&2 anime DVDs/Blu ray, or complete edition or collectors. I always get happy to see what ones are popular enough besides the well at least got the episodes or manga digital and translated right? But physical I always am on the look out for each S2+ or whatever below mainstream but popular enough shows. Most are complete 1-12 episodes , sometimes specials, sometimes OVAs but you never know) yeah if that happens I'm stuffed. Same as my current anime buying is 1 store. Not the 2 I had before RIP Music store with other offerings in my town at least not completely gone thankfully.
I don't go for their merchandise at all EB. I got my store's last on shelf 3DS game so that was nice I know as I keep checking every few days and photoing them. XD but yeah the $18 to $28 to $47 to whatever is a bit ridiculous besides the well Agents of Mayhem or Balan prices of $2 or $10 last I checked. I was happy about my $20 contribution NEW to Balan I wanted it and knew it would flop why pay for something you know will fail right? It can't save it whether $90 or $20. Loop8 I wonder if it will but paid $50 just encase out of availability. I haven't bought a Marvellous game physical before so never know. Other AAs never had the issue. But when I see some I get them of niche visual novels or JRPGs because I never see them again for obvious reasons of availability and I found them enjoyable games besides a hmm what's this or brief research on the spot.
But yeah I buy what I need in there every so often but the varied of the other retro game locations I go to more as I see good pickups of course. Besides the odd manga/anime in other stores of course.
I mean I got my Vitas, Switch and more there. No way paying $400+ for a Switch I paid the $300 preowned price and happy. XD $100/200 for Vitas 1000 $200, 2000 $100, $59 for PS3 Super Slim, PSP 2000 I think was $60 something. They work still no problem and know enough the game or console quality when I buy them too. Or what models. But yeah could they be DKOldies like maybe? eBay probably close or under.
But yeah never bought PS3 or so and gone yep that's expensive if I get $5 each besides maybe certain ones at one store then the other. Then people going ah yes these first party cost this much at DKOldies. Hmmmm. I have seen some of their prices and gone hmm to eBay maybe. To EB when my local one HAD PS3/360 and under still not as bad I bet. But then again they are used not complete always but good enough of complete to case and disk is good enough for me. If it works it works. RIP Lost Odyssey for 360 with no first disk so that had to be returned to EB. I could have waited but I have not seen the game since so I'll wait it out. I did Driver San Francisco and got it on 360 later than an earlier PS3 copy so why not. :)
When my physical music store that also sold movies/tv shows and anime I was sad. The business was prioritising online more I think so that store being removed was sad I think and we had a cosmetics store replace it. RIP.
I knew people barely went in there I only bought anime there but it was still high enough of $50-60 or so I was like eh do I want to. I am picky with my anime and while Danganronpa was there I didn't pick it up at the time due to fair reasons unlike now where I only have 1 option so I go to that store for anime and games on occasion and got a book store for manga now so timing grrr. I could go to my local comic shop but it only has the more particular series I don't care for so might as well go to the book store with more variety then only mainstream action series when if I want slice of life/drama it isn't going to be there. I started my manga buying at that comic book store but since nah library or book store now. XD RIP besides being in an ok position now then a small slotted place before so it's doing better I guess?
But yeah collectors wanting physical and we get less and less over time. Prices changing its going to be a challenge. I don't buy online either so that's a challenge for me as it is. I could but eh I get what I need in person besides the town I'm in so it's fine. Everything is so close by and there why bother right? Or get the store to ship it up which I am with manga now.
But ah digital art books isn't the same. I appreciate them physical even the dmtiny Switch ones ah Disagea 6. XD
How they handle soundtracks as codes then a digital app/the files? An add to Spotify maybe? Even if you don't use the platform? I had to for the Shovel Knight Wii U physical I got used in EB and the code still worked so hard to make a Bandcamp account I think to unlock it. I know it's a fair service but when I use SoundCloud more.. But limited code use grrr Disagea 6.
I wonder about a lot for digital on the console side, cloud, resolution, tier fees and more happening over time. Retro I'll go for sure already am for most cool ideas in games to research or failed consoles.
But here's to physical for as long as it does last and ignoring digital physical games. Those banners grrr. But hoping the games are good and not bad as well got to be picky but also get at a good price and help physical...... Yeah that works right? XD Hmmm
Love the FF13 OST used earliest in the video. :)
