    I'd love to see a reaction video to last years anticipated reads 😁 It would be fun to see if you ended up liking them or not!

    I loooove you putting up a smaller book to help us know where we know the author of new book from. That is super helpful. 😊

  • @MelsShelves
    @MelsShelves Před 5 měsíci +39

    2:03 I personally love that you don’t read the plot - I like the sprinkles of synopsis and then explaining what is drawing you towards the book (and your thoughts about the cover of course!)

    • @DufortIsa
      @DufortIsa Před 5 měsíci +1

      That's what reels me in and makes it more relatable because I often don't read the whole synopsis. I read the first couple sentences, open the book, read a third of a randomly chosen page to sample the writing style, and admire the cover.

    I know you always look up pronunciations later for unfamiliar words and author names, which I so appreciate! ❤But yes, you were right to switch to the hard g for "Ganga" :) in Sanskrit, it sounds like gun-ga. The river is sometimes called "the Ganges" (said like gan-jees) but that's the anglicized version!

    For your fairy era, I highly recommend War For the Oaks, by Emma Bull. It's got the soft vibes and tricky fae of Emily Wilde. It's a classic of the "fae in the real world" genre, and deservedly so. One of my favorite books of all time.

    Okay, I'm LOVING the new besties emoji, AH! So many on this list I'm anticipating with you - mostly the ones that appeared at the end! Funny Story because I'm a children's librarian like the MC, Sheine Lende because I LOVED Elatsoe after you read it, Island Witch because South Asian folklore, A Tempest of Tea because of the Six of Crows comparisons, A Love Song for Ricki Wilde because of the Harlem Renaissance setting, and omg PRIVATE RITES!!! I'm hoping the final cover will be as amazing as the UK editions of Our Wives Under the Sea.

    Ooh, no The Angel of Indian Lake, third book in SGJ's Indian Lake trilogy?
    I generally don't pay a lot of attention to what is coming out when, but this year I do have a couple of titles on my radar! Some you already mentioned, and in addition:
    - A Quantum Love Story, by Mike Chen - I am adamant on finding a romance novel I enjoy this year 😂 it's not that I think I HAVE to enjoy romance, but I like romcoms, so I feel like there should be a romance novel out there I'll enjoy
    - Midnight on Beacon Street, Emily Ruth Verona - I've really been looking for horror novels with that '90's Fear Street feel, and this sounds like it would fit the bill
    - Unbound, Christy Healy - I want to read more retellings of classic stories this year
    - The Tusks of Extinction, Ray Nayler - I really enjoyed The Mountain in the Sea, so I'm interested in reading more by this author
    - Supplication, Nour Abi-Nakhoul - I mean, have you seen the cover?!

    Ours by Phillip B Williams looks extremely intriguing.
    “An enigmatic woman named Saint, a fearsome conjuror who, in the 1830s, annihilates plantations all over Arkansas to rescue the people enslaved there. She brings those she has freed to a haven of her own creation: a town just north of St. Louis, magically concealed from outsiders, named Ours.
    Although Saint does her best to protect the inhabitants of Ours, over time, her conjuring and memories begin to betray her, leaving the town vulnerable to intrusions by newcomers with powers of their own. As the cracks in Saint’s creation are exposed, some begin to wonder whether the community’s safety might be yet another form of bondage.
    Set over the course of four decades and steeped in a rich tradition of American literature informed by Black surrealism, mythology, and spirituality.”

    Finley Donovan-alike rec: The Patron Saint of Second Chances by Christine Simon. It was my favorite book of last year and I’m listening to it again now! It’s not at all thrillery and there’s no mystery, BUT it’s about a character who accidentally starts a con that keeps snowballing into crazier and crazier hijinks and he has to figure out a way out of it. It’s absolutely hilarious and so cozy and heartwarming!
