Creating Metroid Music In One Hour (From Scratch #6)

- My attempt at composing a Metroid style theme in only one hour using my keyboards and synthesizers. What do you think, does it sound like Metroid?
First game in the series I ever played was Return of Samus on Gameboy, I fell in love with the amazing atmosphere and then played Super Metroid, Fusion, Zero, and the Prime series. The brilliant, ominous soundtracks and the giant intertwining maps always drew me in.

#metroid - Hudba
This is awesome! Definitely has a Metroid vibe, though I'd say it feels even more like an Axiom Verge track
I'm actually playing Axiom Verge now! By playing, I mean making a little progress once a month when I pick up my Switch lol. Great game though. Thanks dude! :)
Axiom Verge is such a great game.
It would definitely be perfect for metroid or axiom verge 😀
@@belmontlegionplays3853 thank you! :)
Axiom Verge is one of those games I bought but have never touched. 😢
Not only does it vibe, but seeing the creativity take shape is a real breath of fresh air.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it 😊🙏
it does sound like a (optional) secret boss fight, hidden in the depths of the map, so yeah, it does have that vibe... tho i LOVED that last bit with the piano, NOW THAT DOES MAKE THE PIECE WHOLE
Aw thank you so much! I love your comment, secret boss - hell yes! Really glad you enjoyed it :)
The drum beat is 100% Prime. Melody is definitely super Metroid. When the piano popped in Prime took back over. Love it!! Maybe a tiiiiiiiny bit busy overall but that does actually make for a more majestic/overworld-y sound so I dig it!!
If this isn't nailing that mysterious and slightly dangerous alien world sound that Metroid games are known for then I dont know what does.
Amazing work as always
Aw man so glad you think I came close! Appreciate the kind words my friend! :)
I think this fits metroid really well actually. I kind of get a Prime 2 echoes or Prime 3 corruption feel from it personally. The twisted tones of the choir and the electronic funk just really scream Sanctuary Fortress but with more of a corrupted...dark presence than what the Ing offered. Absolute art here honestly.
So glad you like it Mitchkit, thanks so much for the feedback my friend! I've played Prime 1 and 2 but never played 3, I'm really hoping they remaster them for Switch! :)
@@GLASYS I hope so too! Would genuinely be great to have the textures and shading redone.
I could see this as part of a metriod where you have to planet hop and explore. this could be the music when you touch down on a planet. amazing stuff. liked what you do so much i subbed off the 2nd video i was sent. Great job! Keep it up!
Hi Brandon! Thanks for the kind words and sub man, much appreciated! Welcome to the channel! :)
@@GLASYS Very happy to be here. Love your content.
Love all the explanations of what you're doing! I particularly like when you explain the music theory choices your making (like how you mentioned the open 4ths and 5ths contribute to the sound) That could just be me though :)
Thanks! I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed it. I'm definitely open to talking more theory, just never sure how much people care. This feedback is really helpful, cheers :)
Definitely ain't just you. I LOVE it.
I love this game, and this soundtrack sounded pretty much like a modern & retouched Metroid track!
Hype up for MP4!
Thanks so much Anuman! I'm so excited for Prime 4!! And hopefully 1-3 HD! :)
You certainly understand how a Metroid music should feel. It has a bit of that Super/Fusion melody and the beats of the Prime Trilogy although they were all done by the same composer, Kenji Yamamoto (except Fusion by Minako Hamano). This would fit for an ancient civilisation found by Samus much like the way she does in the Prime Trilogy. It's as if you did expand the musical universe. Metroid can go into more sinister places with horror vibes (like Alien), being extremely relaxing in other areas... but the isolation and sense of solitude or claustrophobia are what make the franchise work. There's room for more or less since I'm not too sure for some of the synths in place, but I'm glad you understand what the Metroid sound should be and that's more important.
Great work. ;-)
Hey ScolioReset, thanks so much for the detailed thoughts and feedback man. Really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed this and thought I was on the right track! :)
Like AM2R! definitely metroidish. Sounds awesome!
Thanks so much Nathan! I started AM2R but never finished it. I should get back into it :)
Great man, adventurous and omninous at the same time
Thanks! Appreciate the kind feedback :)
It's got a Metroid Prime feel to it. Maybe a little Axiom Verge. Nice work!
Thanks Josh! Appreciate the kind words man :)
I'm a huge fan of the metroid series and your work in general, and this... makes me so happy. Absolulty amazing work as always. Really underrated
Thank you Mat Mat! Super grateful for your support my friend! :)
thats a really awesome job it fits with the athmosphere and blends very well man fantastic creation
Thanks so much Akdeniz! Appreciate the kind words!
Love this! It’s like every kind of Metroid track all at once.
I especially appreciated the harmonic motion. I was singing along to the choir parts, and every time I thought I’d matched the key you were playing, and you changed it again - which is very appropriate to Metroid because it really has a spooky feel, unmoored like that.
Thanks Kaitlynn! I’d like to try this again sometime soon :)
@@GLASYS I only added the extra N because someone already had the username “Kaitlyn_L” haha. I wish CZcams went back to display names, idk why they’re showing usernames now!
I’ve been pacing myself with these soundtrack recreation videos because I didn’t want to run out too quickly ;) I think there’s only one left now though, a Zelda one.
So I’d be all for going back to this project! Haha
@@kaitlyn__L Sorry about that! Yeah I don't like what YT has been doing... every platform is slowly turning into another TikTok and it's bahhhh
@@GLASYS I can understand if SOME folks want their username/URL instead, but why not make it be a user setting rather than site wide? I swear computers in general were way more flexible 20 years ago than they are today. It’s bizarre
Absolutely amazing track! Sounds like a Metroid track and combined with the gameplay at the end gave me goosebumps! 10/10
Yo Farmer Johnson, thanks so much! Really appreciate the lovely comment, so glad you enjoyed it man! :)
Definitely fits Metroid universe
Thank you! :)
Love it man! Final product is very solid
Thank you my dude! Hope you're having a fantastic week! :)
Thanks for sharing , it's a pleasure to watch and a nice lesson in harmonics. This track have some underwater groove for me. Maybe the "floating" fourth chords, I'm not sure because I'm into theory of music just for some weeks now. I guess Samus would be pleased, too ;-)!
Hey Curtis, thanks for the kind words man! I like the underwater / floating description! Wasn't really aiming for that but I totally see how that could work. Cheers! :)
This series is so dope!
Thank you Dennis! Really glad you've been enjoying it brother, means a lot :)
This was very inspiring and entertaining as always!
Thanks so much Ownlive! So glad you enjoyed it :)
Incredible work! The song is amazing and the fact that it was made in an hour makes it surreal. Excellent job!
Thanks my friend, appreciate your support! 🙌🙏
Great job and most def see it being a metroid level music. I totally saw super metroid in my head while you were making it and was extra happy that is what you used at the end of the video 😁😁
Subscribed and looking forward to hearing more great stuff like this.
Hey DJMiahLove, thanks so much for the kind words and sub my friend. Really appreciate it! Welcome to the channel :)
I can't comment on whether or not it sounds like a Metroid track because the game confused and scared me as I child. Having said that, the track you put together sounds incredible and I'd play any game with that soundtrack!
Hey Crumb, thanks so much! I totally get how you felt about the game as a kid - especially the NES Metroid was very confusing!
The editing here is really funny dude
Put that on a 5 hour loop, hit play, sit back and Metroid!
I love that you give so much content to metroid it is my favorite childhood game I would also love for you to bring us something from Megaman ♥️👏🏼
Need a boss battle transition. I love it! Name the boss that goes with your track :)
Haven’t even watched yet but am so excited!
God, just superb sound & theme. As always 🤩
Thanks so much Beloyar! Appreciate you watching and writing your kind words! :)
Love this series. Metroid has my favorite music from Nintendo games and my friend... you NAILED IT! Looking forward to the next video :D
Thanks so much for the kind words! So glad you're enjoying the series! :)
Metroid soundtracks are so unique... moody, spacey, mysterious, but also driven in a way that's appropriate for what is centrally a shooter and exploration-focused game. I think what you came up with here fits many of those same themes. I maybe even hear some Perfect Dark in some of the instrumentations? had never thought to compare the two before, but maybe it fits. and then there are unmistakable GLASYS-isms, which I personally love, gives the track your touch of magic even if it veers away from the central theme a little bit.
also the editing with Ridley and Kraid at 4:50 made me laugh out loud.
Yo mr. Cook thanks my friend! Always really appreciate your kind and thoughtful comments. I haven't played Perfect Dark, but heard a lot about it! Very cool that this reminded you of the game.
Have a great week dude! :)
Yess! more metroidish music, this is really good bro!
Thanks so much dude! :)
Awesome!! Reminds me of Sanctuary Fortress from Prime Echoes
Thank you! I really need to replay the Prime games... Man I hope Nintendo rereleases them!
Awesome! You are really talented!
You're very kind, thanks so much Javy!!
@@GLASYS no problem! I love your covers and music. It inspires me to start producing music.
@@javym1431 that's great to hear! I hope you do it!
This is AMAZING!!!!
Yo thanks so much my friend! 🙏
This is cool! I feel like it has the vibe of a band covering a metroid track more than it has the vibe of the way the song would present in a game, which is really cool! I love that therevox or whatever it's called.
Thanks Francis! That's interesting, appreciate the feedback. Yes, the Therevox is seriously one of my favorite instruments ever :)
@@GLASYS mellotron is maybe my favorite instrument, so you can imagine how much I liked your choices in this one haha
@@f_c_r_ I really hope to play a real one someday! :)
@@GLASYS I have the m4000D which feels and sounds phenomenal, but there's a few things the actual tape ones can do that are extra cool (like pressing the playheads down too hard to warp the sound). The big limitation of the real ones (including the digital) is that the machine doesn't actual play tape loops, just linear tape samples that automatically rewind when the key is released, which is why the classic mellotron pads are never held out for more than a few measures. Sorta forces movement and I think it inspires creativity.
@@f_c_r_ that's awesome! I've seen the digital ones and they did a fantastic job designing them. Yeah I know it isn't loops, I dunno why I said that in the video - just a slip of the tongue haha. It's a fascinating instrument. A couple of years ago I was on this Beatles White Album tribute tour, and I got to play a lot of Mellotron on some songs - so much fun. :)
Yep, if I was developing a game I’d be hiring this guy for the music, definitely worked as far as sounding like a Metroid track.
Hey Henry, thanks for the kind words dude! Appreciate the compliment 🙏
Oh man i am amazed that it sounds like it fits right into metroid! You are to talented! Cheers mate
Dude thanks so much! Hope you are doing well :)
Dude this is so dope
Amazing as always dude
Thanks so much idk!!
It really does sound like a Metroid track, at least until the piano part. I especially like the bass (both, the choice of the instrument and the melody). Great stuff!
I think my approach for the piano part was kinda like the piano in Lower Brinstar, but it's not exactly the same haha. Thanks so much for the kind words! :)
Wow man, this is amazing! This actually feels like it’s part of the game with a more mystical vibe mixed with a spacey one
Thanks Yeni Pop! So glad you like it!!
Sounds like something from AM2R I like it good job keep up the awesome content 👌
Thanks Marcos! I gotta finish playing AM2R someday, it's so well done. Appreciate your kind words! :)
As someone who's never played Metroid, I can't speak to how well it matches....but it's another dope track!! Love it
Yo thanks Owen! Hope you are well my friend :)
It's fuckin cool watch you work!
You're setup is awesome 👌
Keep up the good work 👏 🙌
Thank you! 🙏
Sounds very metroid prime-y to me. I like it 👍
Thanks Kuro! Appreciate the kind words :)
Damn, you literally nailed that Metroid feel! Great work, man. Remember me when you're famous!
Yo thanks so much! So glad you like it Skiizlae! :)
There's no time to watch. I'll watch the roller tomorrow and listen to it... Thank you!..GLASYS
Not to shabby.
Thanks!
I can't wait for you to get that game OST job someday. I'd play the _ out of whatever it is.
Haha thanks Ricky! Hopefully if I get a gig like that, it's a good game that's worth playing the _ out of :D
Kickass, I love how it turned out. Will you eventually make more with this same track? Like, without the time limit 😁
Thanks so much dude! Not sure if I'll revisit these, maybe. I'd be down to send someone else the stems to develop them too :)
Bruh your cellphone skit turned off my wireless earbuds lmfao
😂
Metroid Prime vibez
id call it a success. not so much harkening on your favorites from NES/SNES/GB but this sounds like some kind of metroid prime-ish world. you were right about calling this an overworld. tho id like to hear you tackle a totally unstructured Hip Tanaka wierd-fest
Thanks Chris! Yeah I wasn't really going for a chiptune sound here, using more modern sounds. I'm glad you think I came close. Definitely wanna try something weirder / ambient :)
Very much a Metroid sound. Maybe too much? You had so many good ideas, you probably could have made 3 or 4 tracks. My favorite part is the drums and how you used it to create that negative space
Thanks Chris! Sure, I get what you're saying. It's a lot of stuff for such a short track, but that's what happens when you're working against the clock haha. Appreciate the feedback! :)
It sounds like metroid prime to me, a lot of effects, atmospheric, right mood. But compared to SNES and NES metroid music i think its too much going on and the melody would have to be like....really really interesting. i think with just focusing on melody alone without leaning effects you could nail it tho.
Thanks! Yeah I was going for the feel of the series in general, not specifically a NES / SNES sound. But it did turn out pretty busy. I appreciate the feedback! :)
WELCOME TO GLASYS WE HAVE THEE BEST.
Hope you're well Kent! Thanks for the support as always! :)
Metroid hoodie automatically increases your iq by 45 %
metroid prime vibes #gamecube
You have chozo power!
Lol! Thanks Jonny :D
Hi, Glasys! This is an interesting take on making Metroid music. I find it interesting when people create a track made for Metroid, even if it's not official. Those are my favorites. Did you ever come up for a name for this track? And if not, is there a name you'd give it? Perhaps for a location?
Hey, thank you! Haven’t thought of a name for this, I’m open to suggestions
@@GLASYS I'll try to see if I can come up with something. When I hear this, I think of an underground location. But I'm not sure what you were thinking at the time of this composition. :) Also, I subscribed to you. I thought I was already subscribed to you, but I guess I wasn't.
This music would be perfect in norfair region 💯
Glad to hear that! Thanks Johnny! 😊😀
Do you only do Nintendo covers? I'd love to see you do the Phantasy Star II theme.
Not only, but I grew up playing lots of Nintendo games so I'm very familiar with them. I've never played Phantasy Star, but I'll look it up.
@@GLASYS I think you'll dig the FM vibes of the song.
Huh! I found it to be in a weird little space between "totally Metroid" and "not quite there yet". To be clear I've only played the og Metroid, Metroid Prime, Zero Mission, Prime: Hunters, and some parts of both Metroid II and Super Metroid (buuut I've listened to Super Metroid's whole soundtrack many, many times). I'm also very sleepy right now, so I'm far from being the best judge, but I feel like some voices (or just one, I'm not sure) were doing the same thing (or almost the same thing), creating almost a "wall of sound" (which might only work for choirs in Metroid games). The song needed to have more emptiness, imo. As in the melody and the counter melody would play with each other and then only the bass and percussion would fill the environment, with the occasional bug sound, far ice cracking effect, or spaced out choir. The piano parts are very good, except for the very last one - percussion would need to chill out there, perhaps only the bass drum would continue, while the bass might also be able to ground all that open space a little bit more. The timbres chosen were fantastic, tho. And the song itself ended up excellent!
Hi Rômulo! I appreciate your detailed feedback man. Sure, I get where you're coming from - many Metroid tracks are quite sparse / have a lot of space. If I were to try this again, I'd probably do it differently but when working with such an extreme time limit you just start something and go with it. :)
@@GLASYS absolutely, a limit of one hour is super tough and I wish I could do half of what you did with it! Sorry if I sounded overcritical, I just felt like writing a lot, but as I said I really enjoyed the end result! And once again, mad respect for all of your music, but especially your compositional/arranging skills shown in this series, I only dream of dominating all I want to do musically that much like you do!
@@cecilia.santana not at all, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts! Thanks so much for your support brother! :) 🙏
Ok, good and everything, but should I save the animals or not...? :B
dude you just predicted ferenia
Lol why, is it similar? I played Dread but can't remember that theme now 😀
@@GLASYS yeah the chozo temple theme
sounds awfully similiar but without the cool beats
the choir sample is pretty close
@@sergio24m I'll give the OST another listen, thanks! I loved the game but the tunes didn't really stick in my head haha
@@GLASYS exactly the opposite for me
artaria theme 2 and 3 is such a banger
tho i agree its pretty weak overall
I would like better violins instead of the piano, but it surely sounds metroidly. ily GLASYS.
Thanks Rafael! Appreciate the feedback :)
This sounds like a metriod dread track
I'm actually releasing a Dread cover very soon :)
I dont believe its quite Metroid-sounding but its probably closer to something like orbital of john carpenter... maybe it would have sounded better had you tried to make it dark and seething, pulsing like a living organism. A for effort nonetheless.
Thanks for the feedback Steven! Yeah I definitely could have gone for a darker / creepier approach, but there really wasn't any time to plan ahead for this one hour challenge so I just went with the first idea I had. To be fair though, not all Metroid tracks are dark horror themes (though many are). For example, the one I just covered (Jungle Floor) is really up beat and less tense. Same goes for most overworld themes. But I understand where you're coming from. :)
Less ghosts and more bugs, alien sunsets and plants. (Don't kill me, I'm just being honest) but it's more metroid than not.☕
Thanks Christian! Not sure what you mean by ghosts
@@GLASYS I think metroid song (generally) is more thriller and not as spooky. It sounds spooky to me. It's just my opinion.
I like you more than a friend.
@@whtthfrik I appreciate the feedback and support! :)
@@GLASYS Sweet bro, I'm genuinally impressed and jealous of your talents. Looking forward to more tracks.
It would fit pretty well in the Risk of Rain universe, but I'm not feeling it as particularly Metroid-ey.
Interesting! I'm not familiar with Risk of Rain, will need to check that out. Thanks for the feedback :)
