Caretaker Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to stake claim to form the new government at the Centre later on Wednesday. Nitish Kumar, Chandrababu Naidu and other NDA members elected Narendra Modi as their leader. PM Modi, along with the Union Council of Ministers, resigned on Wednesday. He tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. “The President accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed," Rashtrapati Bhavan informed.
The Congress-led opposition INDIA bloc held a meeting to chart its next course of action, with the grand old party winning 99 seats, as per the ECI, in what its best performance since 2009. The meeting will be held at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in Delhi.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was dented in the country’s two biggest states, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress seized a victory even though it had initially looked likely to lose heavily.
