I had the chance to call Kathmandu (Sanepa neighbourhood) my home for 4 years (2010-2014) when I was a teen (age 12 to 16, my formative years). My parents got offered a once in a lifetime job opportunity. The next thing I knew, we were moving from Belgium to this distant mystical land I knew nothing about. I remember our 1st day after landing in KTM, it was so overwhelming, the sounds, the hectic traffic, the monkeys swinging above our heads from cable to cable, the spices in the air, the vibrant colors. It was all so much to process (my mother had a brief fainting episode in the taxi, she couldn't believe her eyes). I remember her words "What have we gotten ourselves into..." Little did we know the following 4 years would be the most beautiful our family has ever lived. Thank you Nepal. I will be forever grateful. I cry as I think back of our life back then, I miss it so much. The beauty and kindness of the Nepalese people. So kind, so warm, so welcoming. Heavenly land.
I was in Kathmandu in early 1977. It was a magical place in those days . Life was simple and the people were beautiful . I stayed at a little hotel not far from Freaky Street called the Blue Moon Hotel . Smoked a lot of hash , A dollar for a tola

I am always watching Nepal and Indian videos...and yes...i dont understand why after 6 years, when there is that stupid "living on a dollar" video always in my recommendation...
I’ve been travelling and working mostly In the KTM valley and Terai, plus through the unique neighboring kingdom of Bhutan as well, for about six months in 1991-92, as we were preparing, then shooting Bernardo Bertolucci’s movie, ‘’Little Buddha’’. Our guides were BB himself & writer Rudy Wurlitzer, who’d both been there for the first time, repectively, two and three decades earlier, and were already telling us how much the western tourist industry had disfigured that most precious part of the world in the meantime. No doubt the so-called ‘Progress’ - and its disastrous consumerist ‘way of life’ - have kept ravaging more and more the whole region I knew in the early ‘90s… Therefore, the present 8mm footage filmed half a century ago by Ed van der Kooy - the same years Pasolini too shot several episodes of his own ‘Arabian Nights’ in Bhaktapur - can only make me cry for the sense of loss that comes out of it - a portray of humankind as it had been naturally evolving for millenia prior to the global overaceleration of history and the tyrannical TECH revolution. A farewell to our mutual roots. 🙏🏻🙏🏽🙏
I'm a 90's born and raised girl in Kathmandu. During childhood, my grandparents always used to share the old beautiful stories about Kathmandu to me and my cousins and how the place has changed in a decade. After watching this video, I truly pictured and felt da stories that my grandparents shared us. Thank you so much for upload.

I am from Nepal currently living in the USA. I spent one month there with my family after seven years. I enjoyed every moment. I would highly recommend you to visit Nepal. It is a beautiful place. All places are beautiful but mustang is my favorite. I really wanna go back again pretty soon.
As Linda Brand put it. If you want to experience human kindness, gentle people who would share what little they have - you will experience it in places like Nepal. I myself traveled to India in the 70's via train, sitting next to a migrant family a young couple with two small childern who work as farm labour. When the train came to a stop at a station the father bought five oranges, offered me one. I was very touched by the generosity. Never forgot it.
A million heartfelt thanks for this video...i was in Muktinath in 1976-7..started from Pokhara..I was living in a most beautiful fantasy journey all the way to Muktinath..took double time that usually...I will never forget that mysterious place.....Do you have anymore videos like this one ?
Namaste Ed, I made it to Kathmandu in December of 1974 and did the Helambhu trek, staying in Nepali homes as there were no tea houses back then. I've just returned home from my 13th trip to Nepal, which includes a year of volunteer teaching at a school for Tibetan refugee children. Nepal made its way into my heart in 1974 & 75 and its place in my heart continues to grow. Many thanks for your fantastic film, Ed. Travel well, Michael
Thank you so much to édit this images....I was in Népal in 1984, 25 yrs old ( + 5 month in India, on the road... 🐾 ) and no camera. So many souvenirs come back to my mind! I recognise places in Kathmandu, especially in the central place with all the little temples... 🙏 Thanks again / it feels wonderful 😊 ( fench girl )

i am the millennial generation of nepalis and even i don't recognize Nepal this way , comparing it back then it is so sad and devastating to see such a beautiful country become what it is today. thank you sir for this beautiful memory of the past

I can only imagine how difficult and comber some it might have had been back in those days to carry a huge camera along with your heavy trekking bags, and yet you managed to capture your experience flawlessly. Life in Nepal has changed tremendously between these past few years, and what you have given us through this platform is a chance to look back and appreciate our history. Thank you!
Every Day passing reflects what our country was like back then. Lets get it, The upcoming days have not passed yet. Demanding common belief that is a change! Great Documentary❤
Thank you this documentary. I love Nepal. My girlfriend (now my wife) invited me to visit Nepal in 1989. I friend of ours told us, before travelling there, that once you visit Nepal you visit again. Took a while but visited again in 2016. It felt like returning home. I would love to visit again. It does have its magic.
Ed Van, You are a legend. Many thanks for bringing such a wonderful and memorable picture of Old Nepal. I admire how you have preserved these pictures taken on 70's. Am Nepalese and to get an opportunity to see this documentary is amazing experience. I made a trip to Muktinath in 1990 and I was 22 yrs age at the time. Your trip to Muktinath is on another level. So remote...so natural and so heartwarming. 🙏🙏🙏
Wow, I so wish I could have seen it then. Went the first time in 2007 and it was already changing into a modern city. We met our Nepali family on that trip, and we've been going back once or twice a year to visit ever since. Even in the 12 years that we have been visiting this amazing place, the changes have been exponential. Thank you for a glimpse of what we will never get to see.

I dont think they will feel, how we felt watching this video. Look at Bagmati. If we dont create an effective sewer system, the river will stay like that forever.
I am in Europe atm and watching this makes my heart filled with pride and joy I thank you for documenting your experiences and sharing with us. Beautiful film, thank you for posting! Its incredible to see how its changed. Ive visited Nepal 8 times, the first in 1990 the last in 2007 and the changes are huge. It looks so innocent back then! Manang and Mucktinath look so unspoilt and there are no touristy shops etc! I have a National Geographic from the 60s which has an article on Leh. I went there in 1996 and again the differences were huge! Thanks again.
Looking back the place I was born from Toronto. Life looks so vivid, colourful & mysterious. I can’t dare to face the life my parents lived. Thanks for posting such a rare video. 🙏
I was born in 1977 in Kathmandu. I still remember how peaceful and clean tge nature and the people were in Nepal back the. Civilization brought everything into ruin. Look at the state of Nepal now. Kathmandu is a place where sewer runs with the drinking water. People are basically eating human feces in Kathmandu. I want those 70s and 80s back.

Wow
After 10 years CZcams finally decided to recommend me this masterpiece ❤
Namaste Ed, I made it to Kathmandu in December of 1974 and did the Helambhu trek, staying in Nepali homes as there were no tea houses back then. I've just returned home from my 13th trip to Nepal, which includes a year of volunteer teaching at a school for Tibetan refugee children. Nepal made its way into my heart in 1974 & 75 and its place in my heart continues to grow. Many thanks for your fantastic film, Ed. Travel well, Michael
Hope you will visit again
awwww... the years i visited Nepal too..❤❤❤
Thank you so much to édit this images....I was in Népal in 1984, 25 yrs old ( + 5 month in India, on the road... 🐾 ) and no camera.
So many souvenirs come back to my mind! I recognise places in Kathmandu, especially in the central place with all the little temples... 🙏 Thanks again / it feels wonderful 😊 ( fench girl )
Felt so good while watching this (kinda old calm vibes)
Thanks to you sir for capturing those moments
Nepal was good at the time of kings ...No pollution .Weed everywhere. peace.

Thank you!
I cannot thank you enough for your love and support to a beauty and cultures of Nepal.

I never hesitate to say that Nepal is a most beautiful as well as varied country in the world.
Ed Van,
You are a legend. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you
I got here accidentally and i wish i had the time machine. Thank you so much Ed van der Kooy for this absolutely beautiful documentary.

True
not actually because we are changed now
hopefully - if only we manage to preserve it for them too
I dont think they will feel, how we felt watching this video. Look at Bagmati. If we dont create an effective sewer system, the river will stay like that forever.

Does anyone thinks where are these people.. and what are they doing right now? If they are even alive....thx for this video
there is no any moment, i didn't thought about that. haha i was thinking all the time
There are so many people alive from that era. Few of them passed but few of them are still here.

Same dates!life changer,eh
Again u r warmly welcomed for Visit Nepal 2020

Looking back the place I was born from Toronto. Life looks so vivid, colourful & mysterious. I can’t dare to face the life my parents lived.
Thanks for posting such a rare video. 🙏
I was born in 1977 in Kathmandu. I still remember how peaceful and clean tge nature and the people were in Nepal back the. Civilization brought everything into ruin. Look at the state of Nepal now. Kathmandu is a place where sewer runs with the drinking water. People are basically eating human feces in Kathmandu. I want those 70s and 80s back.
