- Forgiveness is a decision.
One of the most difficult commands that Jesus has called us to is that we must forgive those who have hurt us and who have hurt those we love. Loving like this is difficult. It is truly tough love that is willing to weigh up the hurt and release the offender from the debt that they owe.

Mike is the best
At 40 years old, I was given the grace to forgive my earthly father for the abuse I suffered as a child. I never thought that would happen. The physical representation of that forgiveness was incredible. It showed me how much that anger and resentment was hurting me still. To be able to release that was amazing. That forgiveness didn’t mean that I forgot or that his behavior was excused - it meant that I was free to live a physically and mentally healthy life. Forgiveness is not easy and, as Father Mike noted, it takes time and prayer. It is so freeing!

I remember a priest talking about the Amish who forgave the man who shoot at their school and killed children and even visited his wife. They said forgiveness doesn't have to be a feeling at first, you say it, you try, you pray, you ask for the grace.

I’ve always wondered how such a monstrous debt was accumulated - how could a servant possibly come to owe 10,000 talents? Of course it’s a rhetorical device but that’s where my mind detours a bit when I hear this parable. Awesome and challenging homily, Fr Mike! Thank you for clarifying forgiveness.
This is a very good question. I wondered and I think this parable not only covers mercy but understanding judgement as well. As Jesus compares the King to the Kingdom of Heaven, it kind of explains the King to be like the Father. Forgiving (this we see from the pardon of the 10000 talents) and Benevolent till the final day. Conversely that might indicate the hardened nature of the servant. First he may have misused the privileges borrowing incessantly taking advantage of the King's nature . But when the King did decide for repayment, in his time, the hardened nature prevented him from fully appreciating the Mercy of the King. This is what happens when we are unforgiving despite all the gifts God gives us , especially, eternal life through Jesus. It shows our lack of understanding of this single great act of Mercy in the story of existence.
I find this part quite intriguing, how someone, who has had and possibly still has a large chunk of the (6000 X 10,000 ) Denarii was greedy for the 100 Denarii. That before Mercy was shown he may have been involved in such acts elsewhere. And because he was now free of debt he continued that same lifestyle. But because the great act of Mercy was now done to him. That is where the judgement was also meted out to him.

Absolutely. The love spoken of by the Catholic Church is not just a simple emotion but a conscious choice, and forgiveness, similarly, is a decision that one can make even when the feeling to forgive is not present.
Thank you Father Mike, the hardest things to preach are those lessons that people do not want to hear, forgive your enemies! Direct command, from the Lord, that is a hard saying, many walked away. To let go of the anger, resentment, desire for revenge, but not to forget or to reconcile or to say 'oh well'. Anger hurts us, letting go of that is good, not easy, damn hard. But that space that held anger, can now hold joy.

The voices of doubt continually crept into her thoughts. Yet she prayed more and more intensely. "Please open my heart, Lord, and show me how to forgive," she would pray. She had reached an epiphany. Suddenly, the words that once rang so hollow to her - "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" - now resounded in her soul as the chimes of salvation. She realized that hating the killers was preventing her from trusting God.
"Their minds had been infected with the evil that had spread across the country, but their souls weren't evil," Immaculee writes. "Despite their atrocities, they were children of God ⦠I knew that I couldn't ask God to love me if I were unwilling to love His children."
At that moment, she prayed for the killers, that their sins be forgiven and that they recognize the horrific error of their ways before their time on Earth expired. She held onto her father's rosary beads and again heard God's voice: "Forgive them; they know not what they do."
She had found peace. She writes how Jesus spoke to her heart: "Trust in Me, and know that I will never leave you. Trust in me, and have no more fear." And, indeed, each time the killers came to ransack the house, miraculously, they never discovered the women."

Dear Father Mike,
I have really forgiven my deceased dad thanks to your sermon today. Somewhere during your speaking, the thought came to me that perhaps I'd never really forgiven him even though after his death, I started to realize that he was mentally ill. He was like Jekyl and Hyde in his treatment of his kids but extremely abusive to his daughters in every way. This brought me to a place of forgiveness but while listening to you, the thought came to me " could I have forgiven unconditionally if I hadn't decided he was driven by mental illness?" Answer-No.. Today, I ave forgiven unconditionally because Jesus forgave unconditionaly while on the cross. Thank you.

Forgiveness is like the Nike saying.
"Just do it," but only God can forget. We can only forget. Forbearance lifts the burden. The sinner owns you. The sinner owns your time, a time given to you by God. The sinner should be accountable to the laws of man. Let society dish out justice. Your obligation to yourself is to forgive.
It took me 60 years to forgive my mean grandma. The meaness flowed through my children. Instead of showing kindness, hitting them was the cure. It is not a cure but a lack of forgiveness and letting her go because my grandma has been dead for 50 years. You are correct. Forgiveness is a process. My process took 60 years. God sacrificed His Son for our sins because he loved us..
But our duty , too, is to forgive ourselves because to God, we think that his forgiveness is easy. You said it God made the sacrifice

I don’t about the part, Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against. I think forgiveness usually takes some time, and as we say this prayer, the Lord guides us to softening our hearts and realizing the sufferings of others who we are angry with, even hateful of. Praying these words helps us to forgive. It’s not just Forgive or Else!
and of course, Fr. Mike covers this near the end of his homily! In my anger, even rage, forgiveness is the last thing on my mind. However, I am called to forgive, as God has forgiven me. Still, for me this usually takes time.

I exactly experienced this and I did exacly what you preached.
My work colleague whom i thought was good back stabbed me by leaking out confidential info.
I was angry but praying rosario and during reflection of Jesus’s suffering in Golgota, really hit me so hard,
He was scourged inhumane way and at the end of the day He prayed to them “God forgive them for they dunno what they did”.
From there i slowly moved on and completely am free 🙏. I still meet my work colleague everyday, the memory will sometimes surface but no hate anymore as I have lifted up to Him.

I choose Jesus over anything in this world. Jesus, lift me out of my debts and provide me financial stability so I can provide for my children. As a single parent things are hard on me both of my sons are autistic. I’m constantly struggling to provide for them. I suffered an heart attack and I’m battling lupus. Father God hear my prayers. I constantly struggle to pay my bills and struggle to provide groceries. BUT I KEEP FAITH. Even though I want to give up. FAITH over fear is the only point of my message. Love and compassion is the only way. God your words give me encouragement. I praise you Father even as I fear homelessness please continue to give me strength. You have provided this far Heavenly Father and for that I’m so grateful. Praise God!

Bro ... if you know- I’ve forgiven him. He’s got full access to my heart, his consecration heals the heart he broke by being a bystander, at my abuse....but I understand. Truth says, I love him no matter. He’s Truth and He’s correct. Our bro is loyal to the frat; hook line and sinker. Me too, I just wanna get y’all off the hook, freed to see beyond the shiny things, and encourage y’all to be an evolved less hard hearted, faithful fish, to walk out of the water, to meet the one who can walk on it. Sometimes I pray, father forgive them because they do know what they’re doing and they don’t care. Thank you for this family. Very informative and helpful.
I’ve always question when people say it’s not important for the person you forgive to either know you have forgiven them, or to acknowledge that you have forgiven them. Yet Jesus made sure, the repentant man on the cross with him knew that he was forgiven. I would like to know that I have been forgiven if I’ve done something wrong and in most cases, I probably don’t know that I’ve done something wrong that needs forgiveness. Unless the person tells me so. Sometimes it’s a fine line because I may have said something that hurt their feelings but that was not the intention. It was the way they heard it or the way they processed it and really had nothing to do with me. Anybody’s thoughts on that?
I believe in forgiveness. Can we forgive 41 years of toxic verbal abuse but not allow the individual into our inner circle? Please help help!

Forgiveness does not mean an invitation to continue to mistreat you…some folks we have to forgive for our sake, then love and pray for them miles away…

How do we go from forgiveness to reconcilation? Because Jesus also asks reconciliation with our brother. Can you also speak of the examples of Saints? I was watching recently a video on Saint Jane Frances de Chantal who forgave and then becme godmother to the child of the man who accidentally killed her husband.
And what is the difference between forgiveness and mercy? Since I think Jesus also asks us to be merciful.

Perhaps you might talk about being accountable for their sins, apologizing and making amends to the victims of their serious sins. Being sincerely sorry is also a choice and the other half of "forgiveness."
Forgiveness frees the victim from offender. Atonement in Purgatory is the Justice God promises the victim that the offender will owe upon Judgement day. Trust in His Mercy. Trust in His Justice. Free yourself from the offender and move on.
God only referred to curse when he spoke to the serpent and to Adam. But he didn’t mention “curse” to eve at all. He was punishing the serpent and the man for their intentional evil. But He gave Eve tools to help protect her and arm her with knowledge so she wouldn’t be tricked again. Pain in childbirth is explicitly not a curse or punishment. Is this true, that the division of the people into two tribes was a cause of colonialism? Because I'm from Africa, not that far from Rwanda and tribes existed long before the colonizers came here. And we would often battle against one another. It certainly wasn't peaceful. But if you are saying that the colonisation increased the division between the two tribes, that could be true. But is it proven? Or is this a modern interpretation?

There are many commandments to Forgive (Mt. 18-- forgive them 77 timets, etc). Where does it say that the Devil is excluded from this forgiveness? You've been given a Divinity great than the Devil, that's why He hates you... that's also why you are capable of Forgiving the Devil.

If my doctor were replacing my heart medication with poison, would I be unforgiving to ask for my regular heart medication? Afterall, that's holding on to a debt, which you ought to release the person from, right? "I'm not going to make you pay me back. That's all forgiveness is." I could see that as being true, if you mean make up for all the suffering and agony they put you through- But doesn't it kinda seem like in this situation, the patient ought to be nagging the doctor for a replacement for their poisoned medication? "Forgiveness, tough love, is voluntarily choosing to accept the consequences of someone else's decisions." According to that logic, in the mere act of asking for a replacement for his poisoned heart medication in order to survive, this patient is not being forgiving. I don't believe that's true. I believe in this circumstance the person being poisoned to death ought to fight with every last breath to prevent the person from doing this to them- and in part, it could be to save the person's soul. In fact, a more easy comparison for that is rape- if someone is raping you, you ought to plead with them to stop and one may even possibly do this to save the person's soul- but this very action is not voluntarily accepting the consequences of another person's actions. I wish I could ask Mike Schmitz directly about these things.
Perhaps the issue here is he's referring specifically to past tense, what the person has done, rather then what their doing now or are going to do? So, if someone's hurting you right now, don't accept it and fight for it to stop, but if it's in the past, accept the consequences?

Jesus says yes. He doesn't say it is easy. But he does say yes. Please pray daily for the DESIRE to forgive. God will help you get to that point. And remember that forgiveness is a process. Step by step. I am praying for you. Give your pain and anger to Jesus on the Cross and ask him to use this turmoil you are in.
Forgiveness doesn't mean you stop trying to bring the perp to the criminal justice system. Forgiveness means you stop hating the perp, and leave him to be punished by God. Forgiveness releases you from the stress of bitterness, frustration and hatred. Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself.
@@wms72 That what Sister Prejean said on death row, counseling families, many thought the hatred and bitterness would ebb with the killing of the perpetrator, but it didn't. It doesn't come that way. Some were surprised and told her she was right, what do they do now? I'm in awe at families that forgive even with words at first at such horror, even talk and try to understand what made the person what they are, but I know they all say, it's a gift to themselves, their soul, the hatred is like cancer and not honoring their loved one.
