  • Composer Nicolas Bizub said “Dawn’s Light is an expression of hope, and is written as a reaction to the many challenges the world, but particularly the United States, faced in 2020. It is a reflection on challenge and the desire to overcome even the greatest obstacles. It is inspired by the kindness and bravery from all people who seek to uplift each other and look towards a brighter future, especially in very difficult times. Dawn’s Light was commissioned by and is warmly dedicated to the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West.”
The piece challenges players with extended techniques, lyrical motifs, and cacophonous style. The brass and percussion chamber writing is innovative and modern, evoking a sense of calm at times, and unrest at others. Beginning with an unaccompanied horn solo, the listener is welcomed peacefully, as more instruments join in and create beautiful, albeit mournful harmonies. The piece continues to wind through fanfare-like trumpet and horn calls, building intensity, until ultimately ending with a praise-worthy celestial ringing of the ears.
