This beach has really changed a lot since I lived her mid 20th century. It is about half the size it was then. I don't know where the sand went but it's gone now and water has taken over. The beach was wider and extended westward for another 50 meters, at least. I spent thousands of happy hours in the water at this beach. Thanks for the walk through this part of the colony. Most of the houses are long gone, including the house I lived in. Nice to see that some of them are still here and have been renovated and are still lived in. I love your "walks" around the island, especially this part of the island where I lived for 8 years.

Wow, yes I have noticed many of the beaches are less wide than they used to be. I can only assume it's sea level rise? In the 2000's there was a nice bar and restaurant here but it closed down and never came back. I used to know the owners. The sunsets were amazing here. Thanks for your beautiful stories!

Masha Danki, Hyro! I grew up in Lago Colonyt (later known as Seroe Colorado -- for the "red hill" far to the east of town). Our family came from New Jersey to Aruba in 1945 when I was just 4months old -- our father was a petrochemical engineer and worked in the refinery. I graduated from Lago High School (or Seroe Colorado High School) in 1963 and left for the states (USA) to go to college in California. The Baby Beach that I remember was far smaller than the wide expanse that it is now; but that's where my four brothers and I learned how to swim. We spent many, many hours at Rodger's Beach -- swimming, diving, sailing and water skiing. We also used to jump off of the cliffs just beyond the light house at the very eastern end of the colony to then drift with the current down the southeast coast spearfishing as we went. The Esso Club is long gone, as well as the baseball field & soccer field that you spoke about. We were a privileged minority to have lived in "the colony" even though we had many Dutch friends and competed in many sports from San Nicolas to Orangestad. Palm Beach on the leeward side of Aruba used to have only one hotel -- the Condado Beach Hotel -- but that area of the island has since exploded with tourism. It's so sad to see the crumbling homes and infrastructure that once was the colony, but when Standard Oil left, most of the homes were razed to allow the area tor eturn to its natural wild-cacti and weedy state. I have many fond memories of those earlier days, so thank you for you walk that brought many of them back!

      @LetsgowithHyro  Před 8 měsíci +1

Wow I read this with lots of attention, thank you so much for telling us your memories growing up in this "secluded" part of the island (back then). I know some storms have changed Baby Beach over the years so perhaps that is the difference. It's an incredibly beautiful part of the island and I wish I could go back in time and see it in its "glory days".

    • @seagrapegrove727

@@LetsgowithHyro I noticed how much larger Baby Beach is today than when I lived there (at the same time as the Monroe family (see above). Several years ago a hurricane changed this part of the island and innundated the old Esso Club theater. That part of the Esso Club has been renovated and rebuilt and is now the open air restaurant. Much of the sand was washed up onto the old sports field as far inland as the tennis court. Did you know there are 52 steps on those steps leading up to the level of the houses? We walked down them on our way to the movies at the Esso Club and then back up when we went back home afterwards. I've really enjoyed your videos, Hyro, especially your "walking" videos. I've seen parts of the island I never saw when I lived there and that's because there were no roads to them at that time.

Thank you sooo sooo much Peter, your comment made me remember my childhood in the 1980's (too young to remember much of the 70's) and it sure was a different and more quiet and simple Aruba which today I surely miss. Some progress is good but not all progress is good, at least that's the way I see it. One area that still reminds me of this is when you head to San Nicolas. You can stop at say Pos Chikito, Savaneta or San Nicolas itself and it kind of still has that feeling. I promise to continue sharing my knowledge and stories as long as I can :-) Cheers!

Hello Hyro!👍👍 another beautiful video! Ho my god I was so scare when we see a bunch of stay dogs 🙏🙏😯. I don’t understand Aruba gouvernement do nothing! It’s sad because I will take my bike more farr than tourists area to visit local people and spend money… last year stray dogs attack us in bike twice (thanks god we learned how to manage that).
on Aruba who ride their bike more
than once a month, 85% would like to use the bike
more often! The dangerous traffic, shortage of bike
paths and number of stray dogs are now holding them
    back.
This is the black side of Aruba 😂.
    Looking forward to seeing you.

Hi there my friends :-) I really hope and wish someone who can do something about it can read your message. I also love riding my bike but unfortunately am limited to certain routes because of the ongoing dog attack issue. As I pretty much said in the video, laws are good and important but equally important is our own commitment to the dogs (or other pets) and it should really start with everyone on the island.

This is a cool video which we really enjoyed. We like the idea how Hyro will show everything from the top places to the not so well known places. Even though this neighbourhood is not the most affluent it still has a certain charm to it. Can anyone purchase one of those old homes and renovate? I can only imagine how nice that neighbourhood must have looked back in the day. We have travelled to many other islands and we have seen some really bad areas and this neighbourhood is not that bad at all in comparison. Great video Hyro, thanks for sharing. Maybe we could send you some bear spay from Canada for the dogs. Just kidding brother, about the bear spray that is.

Hello Brian, glad you enjoy the variety and I am happy to keep bringing you such type of videos. In the past those houses were not sold to anyone but nowadays they are or can be. The neighborhood looked so picture perfect. It was very well maintained, the streets and everything. There were almost no cars or people at the beaches. The tennis courts around it were super clean and nice too. There must be many photos online, I believe there is a website but cannot recall the link right now. Haha, someone else mentioned about the spray too. I really hope we can start taking better care of our dogs very soon. Thanks for watching and your input.

I looked up the Lago colony and found some old videos of it back in its prime, you are not kidding when you say picture perfect, the place was stunning! Lago or exxon built those homes for American and European workers starting in the 1930s. I was a Aruican born there in the 1950s. It was paradise and still is. Same path i took as a lil kid to get to the beach. All this area was leased to Lago for its employees to use exclusively. It was a hella-perk for all these families. Refinery closed soon after the 1960s. TY for awesome memories.

Great vid. San Nicolas deserves its fair share of progress in Aruba. It is not like they are going to overbuild the area. It is very well planned out development and well thought off. Go San Nicolas! It was about damn time for the eastern part of Aruba to enjoy progress, you deserve nothing but the best. Colorado will be the next upscale neighbourhood in Aruba, invest now before it gets very expensive.

Also, thank you for bringing attention to the animal situation on the island. The Aruban people who "own" these dogs need to do better! This was great, I love that you provide History of the island and explain each section where you are for the video. I also like that you stay as neutral as you can, care for the eco system and animals. You are a great ambassador for the island of Aruba. As far as new structures, it is double edged. It is good to have tourist come and support Aruba, however with more people comes more issues, plus a lot of the prime land and beaches are being taken up with new structures, and less land for the island residents, with so many more structures there will be less and less land.

This area is a complicated subject and from the comments I realize that not just for us locals but that our visitors are also "sensitive" about the development (or over development) of this area.

I rent a car because of the dogs. Got scared too many times. Actually out of control if you ask me.

Against it here. The Americans are already commenting about Aruba losing its' charm. Even though the hotel will bring job opportunities. It's a shame that that side of Aruba will get concretetized as well. Oh well.🤷‍♀
    Edit: typo

Yes, I'd like to give it the benefit of the doubt but right now I am not seeing it being a great idea. Let's see what happens.

Way to many tourists now. I started visiting Aruba 38 years ago. It’s definitely not the same place. Way way to crowded now. To much construction for the little island. The beaches just cannot accommodate the number of people unless you like being elbow to elbow. Locals just can’t get away anymore. Makes me sad.

Hyro, love your videos, but you’re wrong, misrepresenting your country and Dogs. Those dogs are trained as working dogs, to protect their humans property, I don’t think anything is wrong with that. Probably why Aruba is so safe. Unsung heroes.

That is until one has bit you or one of your loved ones😣 It's happen to me while biking. I'm not against dogs, to the contrary I love them but you can't leave them outside your property biting and pooping in each others yards. That's a big no no!
