Mid-May is too late. Usually, Cherry blossoms' high season in Tokyo is from late March to early April. The cherry blossoms in the Northern city, Hirosaki are from late April to bigging of May. If you are thinking of coming to Japan in early May to see cherry blossoms, maybe better to try Hirosaki.
