I like the aspect that as Sonic, your job is to go from point A to point B as fast as possible, and everything else is an obstacle. I dont think its noise, if you argue that then him going fast is an issue which runs counter to what Sonic's supposed to do. I think the issue is that these later games lean heavily on just Sonic with no gameplay variety where speed isn't the main approach. Adventure 2 handled that awesomely with each character doing things differently with a reason for it. Other than the music, I think Unleashed did a good job at that too with the Werehog. My opinion though.

The point of Sonic isn't "go fast", it's "get rewarded with speed by playing well". There's usually one path that skips the majority of the platforming, but it's harder to get to.
It's more prevalent in the Classic games, though to be honest, I don't really like the Classic games. I grew up with SA1 and SA2, hehe.

    • @nessesaryschoolthing

You can see that he really doesn't understand this when, even after he dies and gets another chance, over and over, he repeatedly doesn't even try to stay on the high road (which is usually the route that rewards you with speed for being more careful not to fall). It's like he's never realizes that he has control over his experience with these games and blindly chooses to go slower and have less fun every time.

    • @jiv3o275

      > "The point of Sonic isn't "go fast", it's "get rewarded with speed by playing well". There's usually one path that skips the majority of the platforming, but it's harder to get to.
      "
My personal issue with that is that that's the kind of gameplay that encourages repeating the level over and over to get better at it, and I don't really have much fun playing the same level over and over again just to get a better time/more speed/less platforming. Maybe Arin is the same?
When I play a platformer or really most games, I like to play through it, do all the side stuff, get as close to 100% as I can, then pretty much never touch the game again bc I've experienced all that the game has to offer.
When I see sonic gameplay, I just look at all the various routes/sections on a level and think it's not worth playing the level a second time to experience more kinda ok playforming, robots, and coins. These stages are made to get to the end as quickly as you can, which requires skill, which requires playing said level multiple times and learning the best routes. I just don't have the time or motivation for that for really any game except my absolute favorites.

Hearing Arin's opinion about Sonic games, It sounds like a combination of misunderstanding the intended design of the series and not getting enjoyment out of the things that are supposed to be enjoyable. For example, the point isn't to go fast. Going fast is supposed to be a reward for doing the platforming. The "visual noise" is also supposed to be an enjoyable spectacle, which seems to be something Arin just doesn't like, and, I mean, fair enough. I can understand why being bombarded with crazy fast visuals might not appeal to someone. Also, Sonic games are generally meant to be speed-running games. There are all sorts of hidden paths and shortcuts all over and you're supposed to replay the same levels again and again to learn them and get better at them. And once again, I can understand that not being for everybody. I just feel like if there was a Sonic game that appealed to Arin as much as possible and was exactly what he wanted out of the series, it would totally miss the point of the series and wouldn't appeal to Sonic fans.

I think arins opinions on sonic are really interesting, and honestly I can absolutely see where he is coming from - it just baffles me that people can't just agree or disagree, they have to insult Arin and call him an idiot for "not getting it" when he genuinely makes some very good points about the design of sonic games: the 3d ones all kinda look like they play the same, just run forward, dodge some stuff like it's subway surfers, do 4 homing attacks, then some (usually) slow janky platforming, rinse and repeat. this particular game is the only one I've ever seen where the 3d level design is varied and actually has multiple paths like the 2d games, but overall the whole 3d sonic formula seems so played out. Arin ALSO has a good point on the 2d games, it goes way to fast to focus on anything, so usually your not as in control as you think, and then it suddenly forces you to stop, sometimes by hitting you with an un-reactable enemy) so you can do some very slow and most of the time janky platforming. these problems aren't in every single portion of every single sonic game but Arin is right, these things ARE what sonic games are designed around. For some people, that's completely fine, but others just don't like it - Arin is one of those people. he just really like it - but the people that do like it can't handle somebody with a different opinion apparently - and they CERTAINLY can't handle a discussion on whether or not the sonic games have Objectively good or bad game design. It's so annoying to see people act like angry middle-schoolers who can't handle somebody just being honest about whether or not they like the design of something...

That's why Super Mario Run works, Metroid works, and Sonic doesn't. Same with boost, in Mario 1 you actually worked through balancing boost and fireballs, and SA2 evolved that balance to a great degree. JUST holding a button to "be better" is literally unintuitive, there is NOTHING to intuit. Your input should be the enegaging part,a dn all input should engage you.
THAT is basics. "Experienced" gamers just work out of rote memory and get increasingly bored of actually playing the game, that gets replaced with adding more cinematics and make games more about watching a film, and doing as little of the basics as possible.

Arin you literally just had to go to the right. How did you convince yourself that you needed to do more missions of the previous set of stages? How, I ask...HOW?!

its a logical assumption , doing the acts to unlock challenges, to unlock the boss key thing

@@_Banjo_ But he didn't even go to the right to see if there was anything left. Which there is. An entire new stage that then unlocks the missions for the boss. Plus if he was going by logical assumptions then he'd wonder where the boss key that's supposed to appear is after he finished the mission. I get that he can't give his full attention because he's doing a comedy show and honestly dividing attention properly is harder than a lot of people think it is, but something I just gotta wonder "Arin, Seriously?"

That's how some other Sonic games from this era worked. Secret Rings, Unleashed, they all made you complete side missions before you could progress with the main ones. He's probably assuming that's how it works here too and not questioning it.

@@smugsneasel The first boss he did in the game was a challenge boss and required keys, which he got by completing optional challenges. He then proceeded to the final level before that Act's boss and associated the keys from the optional challenges with the keys used to access the actual boss.

things arin needs to internalise/will help him in further gameplay:
    -drifting
    -going fast
    -boosting through enemies
-shitting on sonic with proper reasoning excluding personal short-comings
all that being said, he still performs decent compared to previous experiences

I think the Green Hill Zone level in SA2 is unlocked when you collect all of the emblems which requires you to have an A rank in all 5 (or 6?) missions in every stage, finish in first place in all of the kart races, win chao karate and race tournaments, and I think one other thing that I can't remember. I think there's something like 120 emblems total so it's a real time investment even assuming that you know all of the tricks and the locations of the chaos in the lost chao missions.

Fun fact: Sonic's production name was Mr. Needlemouse because the Japanese word for hedgehog, harinezumi, translates literally to "needle mouse".

Fun Fact (that ppl might already know): The GUN on the truck is an acronym from the organization “Guardian Units of Nations” from the Sonic Adventure 2 series. But the interesting part is that gun also means army or military in Japanese. So it’s basically a pun
