DCS: M-2000C - HUD footage #6 (Kill compilation)

- This is NOT real footage. This is my #6 kill compilation of HUD footage of modern fighter jets. It was recorded on a game called Digital Combat Simulator World (DCS World) and VHS effects were added! In this footage, I'm flying the French Dassault Mirage 2000C (M-2000C) fighter jet and dogfighting Mig-21bis, Mig-23, Mig-29, and Su-27.
HUD footage can be seen as a modern version of gun cameras, also known as guncam or gun cam, which are a special type of cameras mounted on aircraft and used primarily to help measure tactical effectiveness and were commonly used on operational aircraft to record air kills. ▼

Thanks, mate! It is a composition of several effects and overlays done in Davinci Resolve.

Guessing he likely started with some sharpening, then saturation, then some gaussian blur and then a VHS/film effect/overlay for the film artefacting...
How do you make HUD vidoes? do you just video normally, zoom into the HUD and cut out the rest?
Kind of. You can enable a HUD-only view hitting LAlt + F1. That is how I record my raw footage. =D

Yeah, it is very difficult to fly like this. What I do is this: I fly normally, then after that match, I save the replay track and watch it on this HUD-only view while recording. There is a risk of the replay not work correctly, But that is something you get used to in DCS LOL

Sure! I'm not much into tutorials, but here is how I do it: I play a match normally and once I'm done, I save the replay track. Then, I go to replays and record it on HUD-only view (hit LAlt + F2) using OBS or Nvidia Shadowplay. This raw footage is what I use for editing (all my videos are edited in Davinci Resolve which is a free video editing software).
Crop the raw footage to 4:3 aspect ratio and change its fps to 24 or 16. The rest is to recreate a VHS look by changing saturation, contrast, and brightness. To help with that, you can add several different types of effects / distortions / overlays. Roughly is this, it is something that depends a lot on experimentation... I'm still improving those effects, they are way different from my first ones.

Hey, mate! I'm not much into making tutorials, but here is how I do it: With a replay track, play it in HUD-only view (hit LAlt+F1) and record it. Using editing software (in my case Davinci Resolve) crop the image and let the HUD be centered. The next part is playing with effects. Try using a real video as a reference and go step by step trying to reproduce different aspects of it. It is a trial and error process. For every video, it will require a different set of parameters...
