My boyfriend bought me one this winter for Christmas. And soon as I took it out the box poor thing was so stressed it turned yellow and dropped all its leaves. I got scared thought it was dying too. I took the poor thing outside and planted it in the ground. I covered it with a little mini greenhouse (actually a broken down sauna my boyfriend had) it was so cold this year in zone 9B Louisiana we actually had severe freezes. I was so sure poor plant wasn’t going to make it. Nah it was just just going dormant. Fast forward now it’s almost march and it’s full of new growth!!!! My beautiful plant worked very hard on those roots all winter. I talk to my plants especially when they’re struggling. I really believer they push through with a little encouragement and the right soil organisms to aid it. Just put it in the ground!!!!

Hello @quiinzhive2774, thank you for watching and commenting! That is so great to hear that you got a Barbados Cherry tree for Christmas! They definitely do not like the cold but it sounds like you were able to protect it enough for it to survive. I'm glad to hear that it is full of new growth, hopefully you will get some fruit soon! I agree with you, all they need is a little encouragement and the right soil composition.

I'm also in Phoenix looking to plant this cherry tree. Great video on your method...did I miss the part with adding the sulfur to the soil? Thanks

Thank you, I did add agricultural sulfur to the soil after planting. I reapply every three months to help reduce the PH in our soil.

That other stuff is mainly wood chips. It will rob your tree of nutrients until it finally decomposes. Until then you will have to add a bit mor nitrogen.

Yes it is! You are correct Robert that wood chips can rob your tree of nutrients until it fully decomposes. I supplement other forms of nutrients to my trees in the form of fertilizer, azomite and fish emulsion to combat this and they are doing fantastic. I use the mulch/wood chips more to help with moisture control during the summer than anything else. This way I only have to water once every week or two weeks when it's 110 degrees as opposed to everyday.
