Before DEEPWATER HORIZON was the C.P. BAKER.
The very first offshore drilling ship was the CUSS 1, built by a group consisting of Conoco, Union Oil, Superior and Shell oil companies. The C.P. BAKER expanded on this idea and used two 260-foot-long World War II-era covered lighters that were combined to create a catamaran. One hull was built by Willamette Iron and Steel at Portland, Oregon (YF-745 or YF-747; later MAGNOLIA DRILLING BARGE NO. 2) and the other by American Bridge Company at Ambridge, Pennsylvania (YF-1076; later MAGNOLIA DRILLING BARGE NO. 4).
The C.P. BAKER was delivered to her new owner, Reading & Bates, on August 1, 1962, by Levingston Shipbuilding of Orange, Texas.
On June 30, 1964, the C.P. BAKER was drilling a new well when it encountered a shallow gas pocket. The escaping gas created a tremendous geyser effect that started flooding the hulls of the drilling ship. Soon afterwards, the bubbling gas ignited into a massive explosion. The C.P. BAKER capsized and sank. Gas continued to erupt and burn throughout the day.
Documented in August 2021, gas was observed still leaking from the wreckage on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.
