    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for making and posting this outstanding instructional video. We need to create a template for use in cutting a 20" x 60" elliptical lite into a door and have been wracking our brains trying to come up with a router solution. Before we found your post we were just going to draw it out and use a jigsaw to cut out the template, and clean it up as best we could. I have an enormous (and probably unwarranted) disdain for jigsaws. You just saved my weekend!

    Thanks for sharing it Izzy.
    I admire that you always chose a simple pattern for your jigs and for the most functionality, although some of them are complicated, but they can't be otherwise.
    I certainly like your style . Thanks again.

    I'm not nearly as creative as you but I do like and use your jigs and other stuff that you make. All my friends like my work and I am the first and loudest to give you credit when asked how I made something. It is people like you that let the rest of us shine a little brighter. Hope you keep doing what you do. Mostly because I need the help.
    Merry Christmas and may next year be great.

    It is so simple to make!! I really like that the double sided tape leaves no center hole in the finished piece. Now, take a longer piece of your extra slider and set it up to attach to the swing arm like a short one. Bolt it to two holes in one track and you have a circle jig .. a two-fer. My Grandfather always said, "If it's only good for one thing, it's no damn good". However, this jig may be an exception.

    When I was younger I used to see a smaller version of this in novelty shops and craft fairs. They were called "smoke grinders" or "do-nothing machines." I always knew there was a use for them and suspected one could draw an ellipse with it. Great job Izzy. You nailed it!

    This is known as a Trammel of Archimedes [look that up on Wikipedia it has some really nice animations]. Ps: for cool factor you can play around with the angle between the rails and this will change the shape of the ellipse... At 0:41 that small block under your hand had 90 angles try changing that.

    there is a limit with major and minor axis diameter with jig. You can usually solve with use of longer slides. Can use 50% shorter slider to slide minor axis than major axis to avoid collision). Then you can have a narrower eliptical tables

    Fun Fact: This would be called device is very similar to that of a wanzer needle bar mechanism found in sewing machines. (especially older ones like singer, wanzer, etc).
    The wanzer needle bar mechanism is used to translate rotational movement to linear movement.
    in the case of the sewing machines, it takes the rotational movement of the motor and translates it into the linear movement of the needle.

    Use a single sheet of paper as a shim between the slides and the blocks when attaching the latter. That'll give you a tight fit with just enough room for it to move.

  • @TheRoamingHazard
    @TheRoamingHazard Před 7 lety

    Honestly given the innovation and the thinking outside the box (circle in this case) ideas you have shown in the past I was hoping for you to show people something more then the average ellipse jig. Modify this exact jig to create an ellipse that has a 2:1 or greater radius ratio. The length of the ellipse has to be double or more the width. Using only those short pivot slides your limiting the possible size of radius ratios this jig can achieve. Example you couldn't get a 2+:1 ellipse easily without having interference or cutting into the jig itself on the short sides. However if you made a secondary set of pivot slides that were as long as possible without interfering in the center then the pivot points could extend outside the circle and still be kept on their proper x and y axis, allowing for slender sexy ellipses instead of only fat ones.
