  • A short biography and visual essay on American playwright Tennessee Williams I had to make for my college drama class. I thought I would upload it here since there isn't enough about Williams on CZcams.

Thank you. I am an English teacher in Italy and I had decided I wanted to introduce this incredible playwright to my intermediate conversation class when I found this video presentation. This is a perfect aid to do just that.

Before watching the following video, please note that there are a few factual errors in there:
In A Streetcar Named Desire Blanche DuBois does not necessarily sleep with one of her English students as described in this video below. In the play, she admits to having had an affair with a 17-year-old (Scene 9) who is the same age as her students, for sure. Stanley says the father of the boy was upset that she could be a teacher while having such debased morals (Scene 7), and complains to her administrators. So whether the 17-year-old is a student of hers or not is never explicitly said. We do not have to assume that he is, however.
Her husband does not "kill himself for being a homosexual" as far as we can tell, since we only hear about it from Blanche's perspective. All we know is that he kills himself after she tells him that his behaviour disgusts her. And that's according to her testimony. She is, after all, an unreliable storyteller (for truth to her is the way it ought to be, she says in Scene 9, not the way it actually is). But by the evidence it appears that his motivation may be rejection from his wife more than the behaviour itself. It’s what the behaviour does to her that seems to mortify him.
Stanley says he is not a "Polish immigrant" -- he may be the child of Polish immigrants. In Scene 8 he says, "I am a 100% American, born and raised..." He considers it an insult that people assume he was born in Poland.

*I was disappointed that this short video did not cover Williams's first produced play, "The Glass Menagerie," in more detail. For me, this was his very best play--"A Streetcar Named Desire" notwithstanding.*

You did good here, but wish it had shown more than just one still photo (like a movie clip) from "Baby Doll", adapted by Williams from two of his one-act plays. After all, the world of Tennessee Williams on film is more than just "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof".
