3 Days in Hell | Fishing and camping around Knoydart and Sleat

- A 100 mile trip in chilly end of March weather, exploring Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn in my Longliner. I camped overnight on the shores of Hourn and fished a few different marks to try and get the feel of the place. I probably did as much travelling as I did fishing, but still managed spurs to around double figures and some bonus pollack from the wreck of the Port Napier in Loch Alsh.
As for "Hell" - Nevis translates from Gaelic as Heaven, whilst Hourn translates as Hell. Knoydart is squashed between them and often described as being between Heaven and Hell!
What great video of a fantastic trip ! At the end of day one I was about to comment "who needs fish in such great surroundings?" but you did very well indeed well after that. Boating, fishing, camping & cooking, great stuff....another good avert for small boat fishing in general. Well done & thanks for posting.
Hi Ash, I think 3 days of catching nothing might have tested that philosophy! I was definitely experimenting a bit and you learn a little more each time. You could kayak some of these places, especially Hourn, but a boat lets you cover a lot more ground.
Excellent as always , stunning scenery, the shots of the boat in the Loch gives perspective of the sheer scale of the scenery 👍🏻
Many thanks! The drone can be a pain to haul about at times but it gives a very different view of things. Having scenery that's worth filming definitely helps though 😀
Top quality video content and some excellent drone shots. Credit to you that you do all this on your own, it always looks peaceful and everything under control. Thanks.
Thanks very much, although I still find it a steep learning curve at times. It's all too often not under control 😨, especially playing with a boat and a drone - it's just as well I usually have plenty of space around me make any mistakes!
@@Corkwing-DougK Ha ha, keep doing what you're doing the mistakes don't show.
Great video love the fishing and love the food you cook :)
Just as well you don't have to eat my offerings 😄 Darkness can hide a great deal! You get a bit more freedom to experiment when you can lug stuff along in the boat, but sometimes you're just too tired after a long day. It is something I'd like to improve on though!
Most enjoyable, the food as well as fish. And NOMUSIC, thankGod, nor idiotic laughter the moment a fish gets hooked.
Many thanks - although I think my cooking is best enjoyed under the cover of darkness🤣 It hides many sins!
Thanks for sharing Doug ....thoroughly enjoyable , some good fishing in stunning scenery 👏
The great thing about watching is I fast forward the tangles lol cheers
Ha ha! What I didn't show was the mass of braid floating around behind the boat just waiting to work its way around the outboard. That braid's been on my reel for 2 or 3 years now so it could probably do with being cut back a bit anyway. I really do hate tangles in braid though - a combination of fading eyesight and impatience gets disastrous when faced with a full-on spiders web!
I’ve been checking daily recently for a new Doug video n today I got it another fantastic video I’ve said it before could watch your videos for hours
I'm glad it was worth the wait 🙂 I've actually been out a fair number of times this year but not got enough material (or fish!) to make a decent video. With a little luck it should be a bit easier now that the days are longer and the wind drops a bit.
Another great video, much appreciated. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it - it was (mostly!) fun making it and nice to be able to do a longer trip in the boat again after the winter.
Great trip and good fishing. I've shore fished at Inverie and Doune on Knoydart Peninsular. A lovely place to be.
I'd hoped to camp on one of the little beaches around Sandaig but there was just a little too much swell running for me to feel comfortable leaving the boat overnight. There's some interesting looking spots along the coastline but it's certainly not easy country to move around on foot. I hope you caught something worthwhile after the effort of getting to Knoydart!
@@Corkwing-DougK Had a great time, we climbed Ladhar Bheinn and most of the other peaks. Caught plenty of pollack in the sea and some feisty brown trout in Loch Bhraomisaig.
Another fantastic Corkwing video to keep the cold season stay at home boat fishermen among us gagging for a day on the water.
It shouldn't be too long now🤔.
Hope to see you again at Port William this year.
Hi Charlie, a few days of decent weather is all I need for Port William - I'm certainly hoping we can get down sometime in June as it's one of my favourite times of year. Nothing like a pack of tope to liven things up!
Great video, been enjoying going back through some of your others as well.
Glad you like them! Hopefully more to come fairly soon as the weather warms up and days get even longer. You definitely have more options when you're not just waiting for the next gale to blow in!
Brilliant video. A wee bit jealous of your adventure! Keep them coming.
Been struggling to get decent video recently, not to mention decent fish! Hopefully I can get some more reliable fishing now the weather is threatening to warm up a little.
Great Video Doug
Thanks 👍 - although I was getting a little nervous after catching zip on day one. I do like to show at least one fish in my videos! Fortunately Hourn was much kinder to me than Nevis 🙂
Absolutely love your videos well done looks like such a good adventure.
Thanks very much - you're right too, it was a good adventure and helps put winter behind us. Apart from the bit in the middle of the night checking ropes as the wind blew a bit of a hoolie, I could do without that! 😨
Great video doug. Bumped into you at dunbar in the haar when in my sib, with engine problems. You get around, thats for sure. Cheers,Stew..
Hi Stewart,
With a little luck Dunbar should be fishing around now - there were plenty of good sized fish not far away just last week. As for getting around a bit, that's partly chasing fish and species but also grabbing decent weather when I can find it - and also nice places to camp. I've still got loads of places to explore 🙂
Great video Doug, and some lovely fish. Any chance you could do a video of how your anchor lift system works? It looks much better than hand hauling!!
Hi Jim, if you do a Google for Alderney ring anchor retrieval you'll find quite a few videos and articles online. This one - czcams.com/video/-7v8uiDWFnE/video.html - might be a good starting point. It's a very good method but you do need to take great care not to run over your anchor rope. That would leave you anchored stern on to the tide and potentially lead to a quick sinking 😥
Hi Doug just watched and followad also glad to be able to join you on your adventures i am in a similair situation and love my own company and my sib , looking forward to going through your no nonsense nice and long content i just pour a dram and put you on like a good film perfection so entertaining
Welcome aboard! Not that I've been doing much fishing myself recently given some pretty miserable weather and a few car problems. Anyway, the days are definitely getting longer so it should be onwards and upwards over the next few months👍
Cheers, Doug
@@Corkwing-DougK Thanks for the reply Doug i hope to add some content to my channel soon i sold my Merry fisher 695 i had on a marina for the last two years and bought a sib a Stryker 380 pro from Canada for the same freedom you have it’s almost finished now keep up the great work
Graeme
Brilliant stuff, loved it , great film . Those Pollock at the end were something else. Love it up there and was great to see Sourlies bothy again. Must be 26 years ago the last time I was in that Bothy.
We were just shouldering our backpacks when we noticed a small boat heading down the Loch towards us. It turned out to be a retired fisherman from the Isle of sky. He was spending a few weeks around the coast line and had come to visit the bothy. His larger boat was anchored further out. He brought a hessian sack with him with a tin of beens some potatoes and fresh fish lol. We ended up staying the day, lighting a fire on that beech , cooking, and eating the food , drinking coffee and chatting. Was a cool day 👍. Anyway fella, new subscriber here and great film 👍
Atb Rick n Billydog
Hi Rick, glad you enjoyed it and it brought back some good memories. It's definitely a lot easier going in by sea than hauling gear across the hills from Arkaig, although I had forgotten just how large and shallow that sandy beach is at the head of the loch. The pollack were fun, although I'd stay well clear of that wreck in anything except calm conditions - it'd be awful easy to get yourself impaled on it!
@Corkwing-DougK Cheers Doug, I'll keep that in mind. Was thinking about heading over in the canoe 🙂. Last time I was there we walked over from Inverie, then onto Ben Nevis over a week with 10 mountains inbetween. Rained every day lol 😆
Really enjoyed your approach and the perspective you present Doug. Watched your trips to Cape Wrath yrs ago. Glad you tube gave me a nudge with this latest adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much - with a little luck I'll get back to the NW fairly soon as I usually manage a trip up there most years. North of Sandwood and you're into very empty country until you hit the "road" to Cape Wrath itself. I was a little more local this weekend, but Rannoch Moor is still pretty quiet once you're away from the A82!
Cheers,
Doug
Great watch as always and some 🐟 thanks for sharing 🎣🎣
Glad you enjoyed it - hopefully more to come as these old bones warm up. I was actually feeling a little smug that I managed to pull this one off this early in the year. Normally the weather gods wouldn't permit a trip like this at the end of March. It probably just means I'll be punished later in the year 🙁
Great seatrout fishing in glenelg bay along Bernera beach area, best lures a gold n red Toby
Hi Glen, thanks for that. I hadn't really thought about the sea trout possibilities around there as I've mainly been boat fishing in the area. It would certainly make a change from pollack and spurdogs🙂
@@Corkwing-DougK yea it’s great seatrout fishing , if you see them jumping then the gold n red Toby will definitely get them, I’ve tried other lures but that’s all that seems to catch them copper or silver lures don’t seem to do the job, although I v had a boat with me I’ve found that fishing from the beach works best, they do have a bad habit of jumping and throwing the hook but it’s all good fun.
Thanks for replying and all the best, regards glen.
@@Corkwing-DougK
Sorry Doug I ment to say eBay does a pack of six or so of those lures at a good price, there not the best quality and rust quick but certainly do the job,I’ve had trouble finding the gold ones but like I say eBay does them
Lovely video mate...
Thanks a lot! I'm way behind with YT at the moment, so sorry for not picking up your comment sooner. Maybe I'm spending too long looking at forecasts and hoping things warm up a bit shortly!
@@Corkwing-DougK oh I know that feeling... Forecast needs to hit the 20 degrees soon haha
Great trip Doug, lovely watch👍
Well I've a couple of your vids sitting on my watch list too 🙂 and they'll probably put my catches to shame! I'm way behind on a load of stuff just now, so the only catching I've been doing is of the catching up variety! Hopefully that changes shortly!
🔥
Hey just stumbled across your videos and I’m loving them especially the boat ones around Skye 👍 can I ask how you do that neat trick when anchoring just off the beach? This would be handy to know for my boat! Thanks.
I've been asked about my overnight mooring setup a few times and wrote up some notes on how I do it, which you can find at corkwing.co.uk/boat-fishing/setting-an-overnight-mooring/. I haven't done any YT videos specifically on mooring but my notes link to one video with more info and I think there are one or two others where I also show the technique. It works pretty well but I'd definitely recommend a bit of practice before relying on it overnight. All at your own risk of course, so only do something you're comfortable with!!
@@Corkwing-DougK that’s great thanks for the info, yea I’ve wanted to do an overnight camp for a while but have never really anchored before and I’m a bit nervous about it! Thanks.
No matter what you do, you'll be unzipping the tent door at 2 in the morning to check🙂 I really recommend practicing the technique in daylight (e.g. for a long lunch!) as it's far harder when you're cold and tired and darkness is falling. Cheers, Doug
@@Corkwing-DougK yea I plan to head out one day and do exactly that probably in a couple of locations too to see how it goes and get used to it👍 thanks again and maybe see you out on the water sometime.
Brilliant Doug! I’ve fished Nevis a few times in and around Inverie and had good success. Where you launched in Dornie was there good parking for trailer n car?
Hi Dario, I think my attempt at Nevis was a little half-hearted although I did need to find somewhere safe to moor overnight and that influenced things a bit! Parking at Dornie isn't great, and the local approach seems to be to park on the grass at the top of the slip. I've been there 3 times and not had a problem, but space is limited so there might be an issue in summer. There are also some parking bays at the slip but you'd need to detach your trailer from the car to use them. The alternative to Dornie might be the old ferry slip at Kyleakin but I've never launched here and am not sure about the parking arrangements.
@@Corkwing-DougK I’m lucky, i have family in Inverie so get the use of a swing mooring.
Thanks for the reply regarding Dornie, its on my list of places to launch so the information is good to know.
Your latest video brilliant btw! Some great fish caught! 🎣👌🏼
@@DarioFerrari23 Should have added that I would be careful with Dornie towards LW as there is a strong tide run past the slip. The slip also dries out towards LW +/- 1 hour on larger tides.
Have you a in-depth video of how you anchored up from the shore..
Hi James - I don't have a particular video on this but I do explain it in more detail on my website - corkwing.co.uk/boat-fishing/setting-an-overnight-mooring/ That article also points you to a section in one of my videos which goes into some of the details.
Cheers,
Doug
@@Corkwing-DougK Ok thanks i will check it out.
