I loved the subtle evolution of Tau’s internal monologue. It matches his physical growth throughout the book and is really good foreshadowing for how his character changes. Most believable powering up of a main protagonist since Vin!

I'm not ready to put him up there with Vin, but that's just because she's one of my favorite heroines ever. Tau does have great growth in this.

Just finished ... OMG! This was totally Gladiator. I have a tendency of going into my mental files and picking a song that plays in the back of my mind as I read and I could totally hear “To Victory” from the 300 Soundtrack and “Wonder Woman’s Wrath” from the Wonder Woman Soundtrack throughput its entirety. I truly love this book and so look forward to the next installment.

I am reading this book right now and can't put it down...I read The Poppy War last month and had a similar experience. I am loving these different takes on fantasy inspired by cultures outside of the 'traditional' euro fantasy.

Great review! RoD really captured my attention like no other book in recent memory. I've recommended it to all of my friends and have had 5-6 of them pick it up and love it. 2 of those were not even readers/fantasy people and they are so excited for book 2. I think this book has the potential for a reach that goes beyond just typical fantasy readers.

Mike's Book Reviews The positive will still be there, especially with your original community. I see that some of the bigger booktubers don’t pay a whole lot of attention to their comment section except for their main group of people. People they trust. I think this happens for several reasons, a big one being the trolls who have nothing better to do than spread negativity. I think that you’re channel is going to be a big one. You came at the exact right time and discuss what’s really popular within the book community, which is fantasy books. Anyone with half a brain can see that your exceptionally passionate about this topic. Unfortunately, the trolls will only grow, but I’m certain you’ll overcome it. 😉

Some are critical of the central character’s motivations and personality. Also, some complain about the repeated fight scenes. While reading, I do admit that the central character was sometimes annoying in his choice of actions but never to the point where it detracted from the story. As for the fight scenes, each time one happened, I would think ok, here we go again. But incredibly, each scene just seemed to get better and better, despite being somewhat repetitive. The magic system was very cool and the world itself a fresh take over the stereotypical European setting. Looking forward to Book 2.

As one of the guys who finished it in the first week of the read-along, I can confirm it's a page-turner.
That doesn't make it exceptional, it's a basic action packed fantasy story. Very trope heavy, and indeed nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't try to do anything special with them.
The writing is fine. I would compare it to a rollercoaster or wild water ride you've been on a couple times. Fun, over in a minute but nothing new.
For an African inspired setting I didn't see that much out of the ordinary. Take away the names and the setting and story could just as easily have been European or Asian flavored.
