The reason why you didn't die when the creeper blew up, SB, is because the explosion damage from a creeper is calculated by the distance it is from your feet. Since their was a block in front of your feat and the creeper was on the other side of it you barely took damage.
(Basically if you have blocks shields become useless towards creepers)
