- If you’re a soap maker I’m sure you’ve notice the price of Olive Oil has skyrocketed! 😭
After reading up on high-oleic sunflower oil it seems like it would make a great alternative. The SAP values are the same. So I edited my recipe in soap calc and swapped out my olive oil for it and it seems to be exactly the same! 🙏🙌🏻
Just make sure it’s high oleic sunflower oil! 🥰

Ingenious! Especially since Olive oil just keeps on going up ! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Я делаю 100% подсолнечное с солью для мытья посуды. Хранится около полугода, но мне хватает. Волшебная кремовая пена, отмывает до скрипа. 😊
Thank you for making the soap with no additives so we can see what it looks like. It looks good to me, nice and creamy. I like that in a base soap.
Olive oil is crazy expensive, especially for me because I use it to make soap and I cook with it.
Great choice! I swapped out from 30% olive to 25% high oleic sunflower and 5% olive, so there's still a bit of olive in mainly for label appeal as olive is so beloved by some people. Works great and added benefit it has less smell and no greenish tint
using high Sunflower oil will drive up the Linoleic and Linolenic acids and may cause DOS (dreaded orange spots)
Hi Julie, i guess the Costcos up here in Michigan dont carry this or sunflower oil, but i can get it on Amazon or soapers choice i guess, thanks 😊.
Awe no!! If you need a large amount webstaurant.com sells 35 pound containers.
@@OpheliasSoapery Thank you 😊
That is beutiful soap and abundant lather, i love a plain soap no colors and no scent. thank you for sharing it means a lot to me.
A very good choice and skin loving too! I had to stop buying olive altogether! Even though I love my olive soap i make because it's so gentle and moisturizing it'll just have to wait! Soapers choice is a great place to buy cheap but shipping is based on weight which sometimes the shipping cost as much as the oils which is crazy! Your soap is still gonna be amazing and I absolutely love your soap already! 💖
Beautiful soap. Great alternative to olive oil!
the lather looks divine
Thank you for sharing your test.
Thanks Julie! I've been curious and was thinking of doing the same. I have to say that I do love how white the soap comes out!
I love the plain white soap! It looks as if it might have a sheen to it too 😍
What a beautiful bar ❤
J'ai toujours utilisé l'huile de tournesol 🌻 mon savon est très doux surtout Pour la peau sèche
Great video. Thank you Julie. ❤️🤗
I have done the same thing. Could not believe the price of olive oil, almost doubled in my area.
Very nice soap ❤
I switched to HO sunflower oil too. 😊
Good to know. Thank
Does it last as long? I read somewhere that the sunflower longevity a little less
You know... i decided to try making 100% olive oil soap, different superfat levels. All of them were extremely drying. So i questioned why I was using it at all. Now all of my oils are "hard" oils.. and my soap has never felt better. I just make for myself and friends, but we all like the switch.
Which hard oils do you use? I've always used about 50/50 hard/liquid oils, but was thinking of trying a 100% hard oil recipe.
@waynewatson8036 dominantly lard, around 60%, plus some coconut for lather and cocoa butter for nourishing feeling. Thats it! Keeping it simple and low cost.
@@k80bhappypaddler I was going to try 32%/32%/32%/4% responsible palm/coconut/lard/castor oil.
One of my favorite blends is palm kernel, lard, grape seed, HO sunflower, and cocoa butter. Roughly only 28% liquid oil.
Thank you for a wonderful video. Will you be using sunflower oil from now on?
I’m really thinking about it. I haven’t noticed any difference between olive oil and the sunflower oil soaps.
@@OpheliasSoapery I loved how white it came out!
I made the switch a few weeks ago. It's a lovely soap with a gorgeous lather and a really luxurious skin feel after using it.
There's a sunflower farm a few hours away from me, so I love that it's a "local" ingredient, as well.
Also! How did it just now occur to me that you add your liquid oils to your hard oils before adding your lye water? That could save some steps and some dishes when I'm not looking to do a design that requires a cooler temp. I've been melting hard with HTM and then adding liquid oils with all the additives.
Yes! One day I thought … I wonder what would happen if I had all the oils and hard oils in there at once. It worked great! In the winter months I do sometimes have to melt them separately. Depends on how cold my house is 😂
I will say for Shea butter it may not work that great. I find Shea butter takes longer to melt so it may not melt all the way.
In my house, I’ve yet to be able to get my palm kernel and cocoa butter to melt fully before it gets too cool, even doing the HT method on only the hard oils. But my house is usually pretty cool, because I live in MI and perimenopause. 😂 I need it cool.
@MsAubrey my studio is in the basement, so it's pretty cool most of the time, and my liquid oils start out between 65 and 70⁰. We just moved it down in February, though, so I'll be interested to see if there's much of a change as we get into the summertime.
Have you tried the Olive Pomace/ Rice Bran 50/50 blend? Very reasonably priced. But im trying to figure out the SAP value and calculting lye and such.
I have not used that. If you’re on Facebook. Join a soaping group I’m sure someone there has used it and can help :)
I know a couple people that use the 50/50. It’s still a bit more expensive than the HO sunflower from Soaper’s Choice.
Where did you get the soap mold from?
It’s linked in the description box :)
I'm dropping cocoa butter from my recipe for the same reason (cost) and replacing it with shea butter. I think I like the new recipe better TBH!
Are you substituting the same amount of sunflower oil for olive oil or are you changing the percentage of use?
Exact same amount :)
Beautiful! Was the soap slimy like olive oil soap?
No it’s not slimy. It’s not a 100% sunflower oil soap
Rice bran oil is a good one too. The OO price is just ridiculous
Olive orchards are dying. Drought and fire.
The soap will not become stale as the days go by?
Not at all. I can’t tell any difference between high oleic sunflower oil and olive oil.
Hi Julie, I want to do the same because the Olive Oil prices in South Africa 🇿🇦 have also gone through the roof. My original recipe uses 45% Olive Oil. Even if I substitute it with High Oleic Sunflower Oil, will I not get those dreaded Orange spots? I was warned to not use it at higher than 20% even if it's high oleic. I beg to differ. I will experiment with one batch and see how it goes. There are soapers in SA that use high oleic Canola oil and are happy with the results.
As long as it’s high oleic sunflower oil you should not get the DOS :)
I’ve yet to have any issues with DOS.
I was buying olive oil a few weeks ago and put it back. It went from $17.99 to $27.00. THANKS FOR THE INFO❤
check soapcalc numbers because Sunflower oil may make DOS
@@3riversgirl777 high oleic does not render DOS
yes
❤️
I was wondering how much it costs? Nice color soap too!
This was $9 for the 2liters.
@@OpheliasSoapery
Thank you 😊
Has there been an olive shortage or something? Is that what's driving the prices up?
Yes there is a shortage I have been seeing other soap makers change olive for sunflower or avocado I have been using mango butter and avocado in place of olive oil but I will be trying a sunflower oil next
Olive groves are dying. Drought and diseass.
That much Sunflower oil may create DOS
Not if it’s High-Oleic Sunflower Oil 😁
I couldn't wait to click this. My mind IMMEDIATELY thought: We can save money and lower the cost of production!!! Thanks Ophelia! When will this soap be available? I'd like to try it and get to changing some recipes asap
It will be available in a few weeks 💕
