  • If you’re a soap maker I’m sure you’ve notice the price of Olive Oil has skyrocketed! 😭
    After reading up on high-oleic sunflower oil it seems like it would make a great alternative. The SAP values are the same. So I edited my recipe in soap calc and swapped out my olive oil for it and it seems to be exactly the same! 🙏🙌🏻
    Just make sure it’s high oleic sunflower oil! 🥰

    Я делаю 100% подсолнечное с солью для мытья посуды. Хранится около полугода, но мне хватает. Волшебная кремовая пена, отмывает до скрипа. 😊

    Thank you for making the soap with no additives so we can see what it looks like. It looks good to me, nice and creamy. I like that in a base soap.
    Olive oil is crazy expensive, especially for me because I use it to make soap and I cook with it.

    Great choice! I swapped out from 30% olive to 25% high oleic sunflower and 5% olive, so there's still a bit of olive in mainly for label appeal as olive is so beloved by some people. Works great and added benefit it has less smell and no greenish tint

      using high Sunflower oil will drive up the Linoleic and Linolenic acids and may cause DOS (dreaded orange spots)

    A very good choice and skin loving too! I had to stop buying olive altogether! Even though I love my olive soap i make because it's so gentle and moisturizing it'll just have to wait! Soapers choice is a great place to buy cheap but shipping is based on weight which sometimes the shipping cost as much as the oils which is crazy! Your soap is still gonna be amazing and I absolutely love your soap already! 💖

    You know... i decided to try making 100% olive oil soap, different superfat levels. All of them were extremely drying. So i questioned why I was using it at all. Now all of my oils are "hard" oils.. and my soap has never felt better. I just make for myself and friends, but we all like the switch.

    • @waynewatson8036
      @waynewatson8036 Před 27 dny +3

      Which hard oils do you use? I've always used about 50/50 hard/liquid oils, but was thinking of trying a 100% hard oil recipe.

    • @k80bhappypaddler
      @k80bhappypaddler Před 26 dny +4

      @waynewatson8036 dominantly lard, around 60%, plus some coconut for lather and cocoa butter for nourishing feeling. Thats it! Keeping it simple and low cost.

    I made the switch a few weeks ago. It's a lovely soap with a gorgeous lather and a really luxurious skin feel after using it.
    There's a sunflower farm a few hours away from me, so I love that it's a "local" ingredient, as well.
    Also! How did it just now occur to me that you add your liquid oils to your hard oils before adding your lye water? That could save some steps and some dishes when I'm not looking to do a design that requires a cooler temp. I've been melting hard with HTM and then adding liquid oils with all the additives.

    • @OpheliasSoapery
      @OpheliasSoapery  Před 27 dny +1

      Yes! One day I thought … I wonder what would happen if I had all the oils and hard oils in there at once. It worked great! In the winter months I do sometimes have to melt them separately. Depends on how cold my house is 😂
      I will say for Shea butter it may not work that great. I find Shea butter takes longer to melt so it may not melt all the way.

    • @MsAubrey
      @MsAubrey Před 25 dny +1

      In my house, I’ve yet to be able to get my palm kernel and cocoa butter to melt fully before it gets too cool, even doing the HT method on only the hard oils. But my house is usually pretty cool, because I live in MI and perimenopause. 😂 I need it cool.

    • @Amareiboutiqueks
      @Amareiboutiqueks Před 25 dny +1

      @MsAubrey my studio is in the basement, so it's pretty cool most of the time, and my liquid oils start out between 65 and 70⁰. We just moved it down in February, though, so I'll be interested to see if there's much of a change as we get into the summertime.

    Hi Julie, I want to do the same because the Olive Oil prices in South Africa 🇿🇦 have also gone through the roof. My original recipe uses 45% Olive Oil. Even if I substitute it with High Oleic Sunflower Oil, will I not get those dreaded Orange spots? I was warned to not use it at higher than 20% even if it's high oleic. I beg to differ. I will experiment with one batch and see how it goes. There are soapers in SA that use high oleic Canola oil and are happy with the results.
