i would say NO ketchup or pineapple on pizza or pasta (please don't even ask) and if you eat with Italians you should know that we DO NOT share our pizza with others... everyone eats their own pizza. finally we Italians don't eat pasta with meatballs....if anything we eat the pasta first (primo) and then the meatballs (secondo) but never together

The rule of asking only for local dishes is sacred .. for a reason. If a restaurant offers a non-local dish, which is an Italian cliche abroad, it is DEFINITELY A SHIT RESTAURANT
Asking for non-local things doesn't offend anyone .. if they don't do it's for your good ... if in the south they seem offended, it's just theater, a way of Cultural aspect.
Piuttosto, chi non reagisce e asserisce con sorriso alla richiesta, è sicuramente un cattivo ristorante, solo interessato a svuotare le tasche del turista. Chi si oppone invece, ha rispetto per la qualità e per la cucina italiana.
I add another couple of sacred rules, not to protect Italians .. but to protect tourists !!!
1- Never go to restaurants near the main monuments and cities of art.
2-Possibly eat in small towns or rural areas
3- never in restaurants with pasta with pesto, amatriciana, bolognese lasagna menu.
4- never restaurants with photos of the menu displayed outside
5- don't think to Pizza, except if you are in Naples, Italian cuisine is more varied than France and Spain together.
In rome and other center-italy zone, prefer la slicer-pizza and focaccia
6- Avoid locals that offer peppers and summer vegetables in winter or winter vegetables in summer or porcini mushrooms in spring, or squid in August and any fresh products out of season
(Risotto with saffron and marrow in Rome is a shit), outside the Emilia, a restaurant with Bolognese is shit, L'amatriciana in Venice is shit, raw fish in Val d'Aosta doesn't make sense, pizza in Trentino doesn't make sense (there are excellent pizzerias everywhere but tourists can't find them, so in Naples you're safe. On the Alps, for example, game is ordered ...
IN SHORT, ONLY VERY LOCAL SPECIALTY !!
      Do you agree?

Great tips! But my biggest take away from this video is that when we are in Italy in September, we definitely need to take an early morning walk around each town 🥰

lol it’s true! We went to Perugia for some business and we don’t eat pork lol - but we still needed to go- there was mostly pork dishes (or beef) everywhere we went! Important to do research. Indian and restaurants (and there are not many!!) were life savers 🙈

We were visiting Rome from Australia (we all know a little Italian) and my friend noticed the Germans at the table behind us ordered and received cappuccinos after dinner. My boyfriend and I ordered espresso (no way we were going to order a cappuccino after dinner!!). My friend who does not really drink espresso tried to order a cappuccino and the waiter told him ‘No!’. My friend said you served cappuccinos to the table behind him. Waiter replies ‘you should know better!” Three espresso’s arrived, no cappuccino but hours of amusement ever since!!

Hello I.G. very good simple 5 rules. Just two questions. So I was recently in northwest Sicily. And most restaurants offered pasta a allla normal. Would that be considered the local dish? Or is it a trick to identify the tourist ? Or does it even matter, because these rules do not apply to Sicily? Is it even thought of as part of Italy ??

    • @ItalyGuy
      @ItalyGuy  Před rokem +1

Hey Joseph! I've actually never been to Sicily, so it's hard for me to say. I also never heard of 'Pasta Alla Normale', nor did I see it in any menu in Italy ever. Sounds to me like a local dish!

Thank you for your honest answer. One more question. Have you ever tried Sicilian Amaro (digestivo) ? is it available on the main land?

@@ItalyGuy I have travelled extensively through Sicily. Pasta all NORMA (not "Normale") is a typical Sicilian dish with eggplant, tomato and ricotta salata. It believe it originates from Catania.

Here are 3 rules to not offend the Italian peoples of Italy:
    1. Put ketchup on pasta and pizza
    2. Eat like a non Italian
    3. Eat with no knife and fork
So overall, follow these rules (says all sarcastically)
