What some younger folks dont understand about the 80's is that it wasn't all glitz, glamour and excess...There was also a pervasive subconcious melancholy, in that we knew these times wouldnt last forever, because we were losing our "collective innocence" on many levels ...This song encapsulates that sentiment entirely, and instantly transports me back to those days... and I smile..

The 80s called it wants it Future Funk back
Pet Shop Boys understood that exchanging their 80s synth and drum machine sounds with new sounds does not help the song in any way!! That they keep it as original as possible is a great gift for their listeners. Many other artists make a Techno or unplugged version out of their hits (see Madonna etc.) just because they don‘t want to hear the original anymore. For the price that it totally kills the soul and mood of the song.
I agree. But there's exceptions. Sometimes sticking to the original isn't necessarily a must. Your examples are good. But my best example is Swing Out Sister, who've built a strong cult following built on alternate, If I may, a more euro-sophisticated approach to their songs, and in doing so have made tremendously appealing versions that fit their long time fans as adults today. "Breakout" is a perfect example of what I mean.

I was a small kid at the end of 1980s in Russia and synth pop mostly meant music from Eastern Germany, Italy and Sweden. British bands were something very chic and classy and more difficult to get a recording of. I still feel this mood of that time. It is a mezmerising combination of both joy, clubbing , dancing and some shade of melancholy.
Gosh I remember the first time I heard this. Was sitting on the steps having a smoke and thought, who is this, what a great song. I mean, he still sounds the same!
This song brings back so many great memories of when it was released in the 80s. Makes me sad I can't go back and still be there. Anyone else feel the same?

Perhaps the most underrated duo of all time. Their ability to make amazing music and still produce stellar live shows some 35+ years later is mind boggling.
Really a great duo, but I'm not sure if they are underrated: They sold 100 million records and are for critics among the most highly regarded pop groups since the 80s. Not many groups achieve this kind of critical/commercial success. However, it's still a crime that they never won a Grammy Award.

I was 22 when I heard pet shop boys, I grew up with them, they were the most wonderful years of my life, there will never be another generation of musicians like them, the 80s and 90s the best
What I find remarkable is that aside from his longtime bandmate on keys, he has young musicians backing him on this tour.
It’s because they’re forever cool, even in modern young sub cultures.
I'd find it more remarkable if they DIDN'T have young musicians backing them up.
They are coming to Toronto in September with New Order and my wife, my son and I are going. I can't wait. Haven't been to a concert for so long. I'm 66 now and I loved all this music.
