Thank you Marta. Great tips. I do think though that sadly people are not prepared to pay for what the card is worth. And I lack confidence in myself that my cards are worth that. But you are absolutely right...we should not sell ourselves short. x

I agree with everything you said. And yet our cards, our works of art, are only worth what the market will bear. And if buyers aren’t willing to pay more $5/card or whatever it is, the sad reality is that is what it’s worth.
I’ve made cards that should be priced at more than US$75 and as much as people raved about it and said how exquisite it was, in a million years no one is willing to pay that.
$15 seems to be the top price people are willing to pay for one of a kind original custom cards.
I’ve learned and adapted and found ways to minimize my labor time, even if it means more expensive materials or tools. I just can’t find buyers willing to pay for labor in cards.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, feelings & ideas on this subject Marta 😘
I used to worry how much to charge for my work, only because I had no self confidence & worried about charging too much.
Im luck to have regular customers who thankfully appreciate the amount of time, work & love that goes into my makes & they still think I don’t charge enough.
I think I’m sensible with my price, as everything I make is a personal piece.
I agree with you, that I’m not in competition with the mass produced & my prices reflect that.
    Great video😘❤️

Thank you so much Carla and I’m happy to hear you also have a group of customers who appreciate you and keep coming back to you, some of my “customers” keep coming back for years now and I’m blessed they now become my friends. And I absolutely love that smile on their face every time they pick up their cards and are delighted with them and give me hug… that’s the priceless bonus coming with our work - best work in the whole world ❤️❤️❤️❤️

This was very helpful. I never thought about the pricing for the design process, which is where I spend the most of my time. I will definitely add this as my top expense in my cost.

  • @alisakerwoodakarainbowangel

I'm a disabled card maker and I'm also on what the US calls social security disability income (S.S.D.I. for short) and I am charging 5 dollars a card. I thank you for the topic

Really enjoyed this Marta. It is so difficult to not undervalue. I am not very good at valuing my cards because I always feel they aren't good enough to charge more 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thank you so much Laura, I know exactly how you feel as I was feeling the same for years, but it does get easier my friend, the more cards you make and sell, the more happy customers you will have the more self confidence you will grow. Good luck my friend and thank you for watching ❤️

This is Linda from Minnesota! Thank you for this video - it was great information and you are so sweet! I’m getting ready to start selling some of my cards and was just having a discussion with another cardmaking friend today about pricing. I especially liked your comments about the bulk pricing mindset.. really good point that this does not make sense for handmade items!!!

Fantastic video Marta, great use of examples, I agree that the printed cards in bundles are so cheap and people think that what some of our handmade cards should be chargered, you just have to find the balance 😊 have a fabulous day and happy crafting 😊😊😊

I really really enjoyed this video! Another cost to factor in if you are going to a craft fair is the cost of entry.

Thank you so much, it's been quite a few years I'm selling my cards now, so many if these situations I come across myself. I also just posted another part of this chitchat video with the different ways of selling cards and few mistakes I made. I hope you will like hat one too. Thank you so much for watching ❤️

Thanks for this,I've made card for about 17 years. I find it very difficult to know what price to take and to take what I should...So many think it's expensiv, but now I know what to say so they understand more. But I 've a lot of things I don't know what I payed for, and I try to don't buy more of what I have, not so much at least😅 so to find out the price will take maybe years... I bought a pack of ephemera papers, and there is a lot of images. How can I find out what to take for those fussy cut things? Those are expensiv. And if I buy Those that are allready cut out, they are more expensiv, how to find a price there? It might be 40 items, but some small, and some big, so its Not just to divide the price with 40...I probably usualy ask for only the costs, and a tiny bit more, for many of my cards.

Another thing that you should consider is doing market research on what individuals will pay. Making less complicated cards for lower price stair stepping prices is also a great way to have things that others people can afford. The market for extras is getting squeezed by inflation.

Thank you for this, but I see this with any work that traditionally has had a mostly female workforce like teaching, social work, librarianship, daycare center work. Only women have been somehow taught that expecting and receiving money for goods or services, that often have a male counterpart, is somehow...shameful(?), greedy, or asking too much. Compare the money paid to male soccer players vs. the female professional soccer players until recently. When the female soccer players brought the pay disparity to their bosses, the people who pay them, they were told that they should be GRATEFUL that they were playing soccer at all.
I looked for this video because I'm looking at maybe selling cards, or making some type of wall art from my paper art. Personally, my suggestion to you would be to find a way to use your skills to make limited editions; longer use items like date books with your card designs as the illustrations,;or one of a kind pieces that you could charge significantly more per unit. Also maybe find some information on the buyer psychology of limitations. I think I read somewhere that people buy more when they think there won't be anymore of the item in the future.
The Wal-Mart mindset is everywhere, and unfortunately people don't value cards because they have been disposable. Ironically, the recent increase in the prices of everything, including shipping, and paper goods may allow you to increase your prices without as much pushback. Good luck to youm, and thanks again.
