The song was written by Mark Lowrey in 1984. This is one of many covers. From an intellectual point of view, Mary knew a lot of things because the angel told her. However, the essence of the song is the incredible grandeur and glory of God being birthed by a teenage girl, and in that respect, we are put in Mary's shoes for a moment to ponder what it must have been like. Mary experienced the love for Jesus both her son, and the eternal creator of the universe. That is truly amazing and unfathomable. To watch him crucified later on must have been heart-wrenching for anyone, but in a very special way, his mother.
