9:34 these things scared the FUCK out of me when I first played half life, and still kinda do.
It's the only enemy model I know where it's junky animation and glitchy physics make it unnerving. I played through Half Life not too long ago, and I was prepared to face it in the water. But then I jumped on a platform to safety, and it glitched its way up to attack me. I was cursing at the screen and freak-out jumping.
There is something uncanny about the 3D engines of the time. They are detailed enough that you know what it's supposed to be, but simple enough that your mind fills in the gaps. The animations are fluid enough for a proper illusion of human motion, but janky enough to feel off.
Like the first Skaarj encounter in Unreal. You're in a hallway, just pushed the switchin room at the end and on your way back, the music fades out, barricades move in the way to block your escape and piece by piece the lights turn off.
Then the wall opens and the enemy comes out of a small room behind the wall. It's dark, the only light source being gunfire.
Up until that point the only enemies were weird things on the ceiling that shoot darts and clunky guys who shoot slow rockets that are easy to dodge.
And now you're in a dark hallway with a fast enemy that closes the distance while firing laser balls and can dodge!

I like to believe that the room at 8:29 is a genuine experiment in Black Mesa.
They already send teams to Zen before the whole resonance cascade, so there is a chance the scientists already know headcrabs. And if they somehow find a fixed teleport exit that just keeps putting out headcrabs, build a room around it to find the best way to eliminate them.
