    When you checked your target with the level, you kept saying level when you had the level in a vertical position. A vertical framing piece, such as a post or stud, is "plumb" when it's perfectly straight, and when a horizontal member has no tilt, it is "level." Just saying! Most people don't know the difference...

    Very nice review of a quality mid range (price wise) scope. Excellent scope for long range target shooting. I own two of them and I am completely satisfied with them. One comment I disagree with is the throw lever. I have it installed on both my scopes, it was very easy to install and it work incredibly well. I admit it does look a bit on the "cheapo" side but once installed it is very solid and performs flawlessly. I can't say enough about that model scope, incredibly pleased with them.

  • @ronws2007
    @ronws2007 Před 2 lety

    Venom is an excellent scope and one I could use for anything. If I was to get into 1 mile club, I might go to the Golden Eagle HD which is a 15-60X60. But that would be overkill for shooting deer and hog in the dense forests of northeast Texas.
    I have just about never used a lighted reticle and the few scopes I have, including the Arkens, the battery just wears down.
    I have a number of Vortex scopes. Crossfire II 3-9x40 that came on my Mossberg Patriot. Two of the Diamondback Tactical 6-4X50. And now, three of the Venom 5-25X56.
    All of which were doing fine. But I kept reading of how people, some of whom I respect very much, were going bonkers for Arken. So, I got a few. A 4-16 and a few 6-24. Good glass. Not superior to Vortex but comparable. I happen to like the Vortex more. Both have chromatic aberration. Which is not a deal killer. That is what happens when you put on coatings to fight against glare.
    My problem with Arken is, I think, a design issue. Specifially, the turret covers or scales are held on by little allen screws. And no matter what I do, they loosen. So, then, when I notice they are spinning freely and hope the actual turret has not moved, costing me my zero. This has happened more than once.
    The turret design of Vortex optics is completely different and this has never happened, not even once, with my Vortex scopes. Set it and forget it. Although I also had a problem with the Vortex throw lever and the mag dial is so very tight.
    What has cause drifting shots for me. First off, the rings. You can only tighten down to 18 in-lbs or so. So, what I do is set the rings so that the front ring is at the back of the objective bell. Well, first, I tighten the base while pushing toward the muzzle. So, on a rifle like my TC Compass II .308 Win, it came with separate little Weaver mounts. I went to EGW and found the 0 MOA pic rail for my model. Put that on. Now I can mount where I need it. This way, recoil cannot cause the scope to drift back.
    Let me be a scope heathen for a moment. Full disclosure, I align the scope longitude-wise with the body of the rifle. It works better for me than a level.
    Another cause of errant shot placement for me is the stock. My Mossberg Patriot started out with the worst accuracy, probably around 2 MOA. When I put it in an MDT chassis, I got 1 MOA with my mediocre shooting ability and 60 rounds worth of hot barrel. I found later why that is. Long story short, the stock for the Patriot has a gap in the rear action screw guide and also the mag well is used as a spacer. This means you can never torque down the rear action screw the way you need to. This means you could have a millimeter of movement in the rear of the action, using the front action screw as a fulcrum. Change to a chassis or some kind of bedded stock and it will improve. My TC Compass II has a single piece molded plastic stock with metal pillars for bedding and it averages 1/2 MOA out of the box. And after 40 rounds.
    So, the guy who had shots all over the place, I would suggest looking at the scope mount placement and the stock. Also, I am rather mystified. How could he live in a place where he can have a firearm and ammunition. And he got hold of a Venom but is not allowed to ship for repair or receive it? And it cost him the same amount as here in the USA. And he has access to internet and ability to post on YT. So, it is not one of the countries that blocks off internet access and we know who I am talking about.
    To quote Jim Carey as Ace Ventura, Pet Detective - "Really?"
    The other thing I like about the Venom and the Diamondback is also mentioned here. The eye box. A bit wider field of view and I don't have to get my eye close and take a chance on getting scope brow. When I get one of those marks, I have to do my Carol Channing impersonation.

    Love Vortex as well. BUT,... Something nobody ever mentions:
    My Nikon HAD a lifetime warranty as well. 'Til they decided, uh.."Not Anymore"!
    Obviously all a company has to do, once they've made their Million$, reaching a market saturation point, they can just quit manufacturing scopes & say they aren't going to honor warranties any longer. 🤔 hmm, -makes one wonder how long ANY "Lifetime" warranty is really good for. When it comes down to it, a Lifetime warranty is only good as long as the company wants to honor it.

    • @the762dude2
      @the762dude2 Před 5 měsíci

      While this is true, you have to look at the company mission statement and business model. Nikon is know for producing cameras and lenses for hipsters and lefties. They know they’re primary customer base and don’t want to piss them off. Rifle scopes was just side cash for them. Companies like Vortex (and especially PSA) are super based and the risk of them just stopping making optics out of nowhere is pretty minimal.

      The last thing I was very interested in this optic (vortex venom) and I wanted to know if the turrets were locked or can be adjusted without being unlocked because it seems strange to me that the windage turret is free to turn since even a plant is enough to change the setting.🤔

      You can ask somebody experienced to try your gun+ammo combination on bench to figure out how much is you and how much rifle+ammo.

      @@ElfstersRiflesandReloading That was a very well done and informative video but it still seems a little like setting your phone language to Spanish. Every time you do something, you have to translate to your native language. If I'm at 100 yards and shooting 4 inches left I simply adjust 4 moa right or I grab my calculator for mil adjustment. Conversely, if I was Canadian and shooting at 100 meters and I was 8cm to the left I would simply adjust .8 mil to the right or I grab my calculator for the moa adjustment. Is it just that most competition shooters are ex-military and military is metric?

    • @ElfstersRiflesandReloading
      @ElfstersRiflesandReloading  Před 2 lety +2

      I can tell you this much.... if you ever think you might use this for something like PRS competition shooting, then damn near 90% plus guys are using mils... not moa... and most are going to be making calls in mils. Not moa..... unless you're shooting something like benchrest. There is a reason why I have both moa and mil... so I can stay fresh on both... once you fully understand the two, then you simply know it's either 4 quarters to make a dollar.... or 10 dimes to make a dollar.

      @jefflayton5889 Před rokem +2

      When i am shooting my b14r i had an arken in on it at first. Switched to the venom because the glass in the arken wasn’t good enough for me to be able to see trace. The arken has a lot of great features, i actually love the way they do their zero stop. But the ability to see why i missed due to a bad wind call because i can see the bullet in the end is a lot more important than a zero stop. Arkens glass does not compare when put up against the venom. And in a scope that’s the most important feature.
