  • We went hands on with the Z7 at the Nikon Z series Launch event at Robert's Camera in Indy.
Note: when talking about the new Noct Lens series I say astrology, I ment fo say astronomy.

They call it "battery pack", not "battery grip" - as it has no shutter button or control of any kind.

The reps at the event said it would hold 2 batteries and attach to the bottom like a grip. No word on Any additional functions, but I would doubt additional functions as there were no additional contacts

How's the focusing in low light?

In the short time I had with it the AF speed was atleast on par with a d500 or d850. Using the touch screen was a tad slower. I cannot attest to true accuracy but it appeared good on the camera.

That's good news, considering that Tony&Chelsea and DPReview reported AF problems. You have no idea how many people cancelled their orders based on Tony's review. Since the brochures talk about many things/features that the reviewers did not even mentioned, I'll wait a little bit to hear from actual users and non-CZcams professional reviewers.

We try to provide good and unbiased reviews on equipment here. I did not have the camera for the days that others did so I could not setup charts, dof tests etc. But in real world usage that I had for the duration of the event I can say it seamed very well thought out with the 2 exceptions of 2nd memory card and a battery grip option, the second one of which is seemingly being addressed by Nikon (the grip) we will see how that goes through as its "being considered for development" this would help with long shoots, timelapse etc.
I personally would like to see a z8 having all the options many want like 2 cards etc and bringing down the price points by $500ish of the z6/7 making what I would feel as more appealing to consumers. The z6 really should have a flip out LCD that faces the front somehow (definitely not new technology)
Just our 2cents. Thanks for following us!

What happened to the second car slot, even if it was as good as its competitors its a not starter without a second card slot. Fact.

Honestly this is the only real flaw I see in the camera. When asked, the Nikon reps shrugged it off with no real answer. It was the top question of the event. The only other minor things I see is a non front looking/articulating LCD for vlogging and the mount change requiring an adapter to use existing f-mounts (I do understand why they did this though)

Thank you for your answer, we cannot wait any longer, so we have just ordered an A9 to add to our Nikon kit, our gain Nikons loss. The Rep who shrugged his shoulders is obviously also disappointed, if not he would have a clever Nikon answer for you, and the reason he has no answer is because he has not been told.

When I say shrugged they gave the same sort of answers as they did with like the d7500 change. Technology, space, weight, cost type stuff. Almost all of the 30ish in attendance thought the same of "why only 1 card" if it wasnt due to launch so soon I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it. They did mention they are developing a battery pack but what's odd is no additional contacts on the camera so it would be battery only unless the tripod mount area has space (it looks like it could)
Unfortunately though in almost 20 years in checking out preproduction models such modifications are rarely added between now and sale date. Mostly firmware, sometimes internal memory chip etc. And the card slot area does not look big enough to hold a 2nd except maybe a microSD

One would think that the photography world is inhabited 95% by wedding photographers.....
Suprisingly, wedding photographers form only a small part of the market, for whom there are already excellent alternatives. Why a pro wedding photographer would consider enthusiasts model cameras I can't fathom - these are not A9 competitors - unless you are hoping save on the considerable cost of the A9.
