The thing about Hamilton and Burr that hurts is that what they learned from each other was their downfall. Hamilton took and took but he was going so fast and at the end of his life decided to finally slow down like Burr would, he decided to trust that Burr would wait like he always had before, but Burr learned not to hesitate from Hamilton, so he took his shot and paid for it.

Honestly, Leslie Odom Jr. is the Robin Williams of Hamilton. There's no replacing him. The amount of emotion he can put in his songs, especially when he screams "Wait!" in The World Was Wide Enough, is phenomenal. Lin Manuel made an excellent choice in casting him.

  • @zoie8088

This song shows how Hamilton and Burr's differences make them more similar.
Hamilton "writes like he's running out of time" because he knows he's the only thing he has control over and he wants to be as successful as possible when death finally sneaks up on him. "He takes and he takes and he takes" because he knows you don't get anything in life without taking it.
Burr is "willing to wait for it" because he knows he's the only thing in life he can control and goddamn it if he won't die happy, he won't die at all. He's "lying in wait" because he's calculating risks and rewards and trying to "never let them know what he's against and what he's for".
They're both watching the clock but, for different reasons and that would make them either best friends or perfect rivals. Which I guess they were kinda both.

    • @akaneriyun4774
      @akaneriyun4774 Před 4 lety +116

That's a really good analysis. Burr is the kind of person who never acts if he sees any chance of failure or risk of losing what he already has. Hamilton, on the other hand, haphazardly acts because he is never satisfied of what he already has. Both craves for more but acts differently because of a difference in perspective and background. This play is amazing because it shows us both Burr AND Hamilton's folly: too much waiting causes stagnation and lack of progress; whilst too much aggressiveness leads to careless, irreversible mistakes that might ruin everything.

This is so accurate. It really just shows how human both of them are. As he says Hamilton has nothing to lose and that’s why he’s so ambitious. Burr doesn’t want to lose what he has so he waits for the perfect time to get things done

Both are opposites of each other that had the same goals.
Hamilton lived like he really was the center of the stage (no inhibitions about getting to any goals) while Burr had to always observe from outside the room most times with self-doubt.
Reminds me of the Hamilton types of people I've met in my life; I've always envied their drive. Sometimes I wish I could stop being a Burr and be on the center of MY stage more.

I know I’m late to party. Just wanted to add that Burr was more cautious because he has his family’s legacy to protect. Hamilton has nothing to lose so he’s less cautious than Burr. I don’t blame Burr for being cautious. I also get why Hamilton saw Burr as a man who refuses to take a stand for anything. Hamilton endorsing Jefferson and costing Burr his chance to become President was the final straw. Burr was furious.

They easily could've made Burr the villain but they didn't and that's why I love this musical. Burr is one of my favorite characters too. I relate to hamilton's ambition and burr's desire to please some vague "everybody" by not being open about what he himself believes. ("Don't let them know what you're against or what you're for.")

The sad thing is that Aaron Burr never wanted to be the bad guy. When Burr and Hamilton were in a duel, Burr had no idea that Hamilton was shooting up and not towards Burr, therefore Burr kind of accidentally shot Hamilton. Burr even says at Hamilton’s funeral how he hates how everyone is gonna see him as a villain. I mean... I don’t see Burr as a bad guy. He just made a mistake that’s all 🥺

if you haven't read it, i'd recommend that you read it. even if you can't relate to her, i'm not disabled and i still found it a really good book. have a good one!

At the end of Act I, Hamilton acts and Burr waits. However, at the end of Act II, Hamilton is now the one who waits and Burr is the one who acts. At both occasions we saw the ill effects of the lack of balance between over passiveness and over aggressiveness. In Act I Hamilton strains his family relations because he cannot be satisfied with his current standing; always wanting more whilst Burr refuses to back the Constitution because he doesn't want to partake in anything with any apparent risk for the risk of losing his status, throwing away his shot at a legacy right then and there. At the end of Act II, Hamilton throws away his shot and does not actively seek any reconciliation with Burr. This, of course, led to his death. Burr, on the other hand, pulled the trigger on one of the most influential personalities in history, forever damning his name and legacy to that of a murderer.

Can I just say how much I appreciate that one line at 1:45 where Burr sings, "I'm not falling behind or running late! I'm not standing still, I am lying in wait!" All my life, I've compared myself to others, and often felt like I was falling behind. Like all my peers were "ahead" of me in life, as though life were a race. Even now I struggle with these feelings, unfortunately. I compare myself to my peers, whom have jobs and driver's licenses and some of whom who are already married and have kids and places of their own. Meanwhile, I'm still living at home with my parents, I have no job, no driver's license, no boyfriend and no children. I often feel like I am one step behind everyone else, and I fear that I will always be behind. I fear I will find myself still single and living at home with my parents with no job at the age of 40. But that one line, "I'm not falling behind or running late!" helps somehow. I'm going to try repeating this line to myself whenever I'm feeling inferior to my peers and my own progress in life. I have to keep reminding myself that everybody goes at their own pace.

I love Burr as this musical's character. He's so relatable...
I feel alone. My father left us, my mother is in trouble and there's no more family.
I did have a friend that committed suicide and that marked me. I've had that tendency for years and I often ask myself why I'm still here.
I don't know if I'm waiting but I feel trapped.
I may sound like a little kid but I wanted my mom to feel proud.
She will never be, even if she says she is.
I have accomplished nothing but if I die, I'll never do
    I think that's why I feel trapped

Hamilton lived like he really was the center of the stage (no inhibitions about getting to any goals) while Burr had to always observe from outside the room most times with self-doubt.
Reminds me of the Hamilton types of people I've met in my life; I've always envied their drive. Sometimes I wish I could stop being a Burr and be on the center of MY stage more.

Ngl I am like Hamilton, I do theater and I strive to always be on stage and I’m good at it, I always put myself in a position to be front and center, even when people tell me I’m great that isn’t enough for me I guess you can say I’m never satisfied and that has made many of my peers dislike me and discredit every time I land a role sometimes I wish I could be a burr so they can like me or at least for them not to have me as their punching bag

Burr is the fighter who plays defense and waits for his opening. When he moves it's going to be calculated and perfect. Not the most exciting fighting style but it definitely gets the job done. Hamilton just comes in fist blazing. He's all offense all the time. His fights are more exciting and create more highlights. Both men know there's limited time on the clock to get the job done. But they both use the time in different ways. Neither way is better or worse. Just different. Both could have taken and learned a little bit from each other and been better fighters for it.

The choruses hit me so hard. Life and death don't discriminate, between the sinners and the saints, they take and take and take. I keep living anyways, rising and falling and breaking and making mistakes. If there's a reason I'm still alive when my two best friends have died... I'm not sure I can wait for it.
For context, my best friends from school both died young. One was a genuine candidate for sainthood, who lost her 3 and a half year battle with leukemia our senior year of high school, the other, who's biggest 'sin' was who she chose to love, killed by a drunk driver after accepting an athletic scholarship to one of our state's major universities. And I'm still here twenty years on, not even worthy of their memory, left to wonder why? What was and is so special about ME, for crying out loud, that I should live when they didn't? Certainly they would have had more to offer the world in the last two decades than I have?
If you're still here, thank you. I just watched Hamilton last night for the first time, and broke down crying at this part as it reopened and perfectly articulated a twenty year old hurt in less time than it took me to write this whole thing. May God, by whatever name you choose to assign Him (or Her) bless you.
