It’s killing me that I can’t watch this episode till I finish work😞. This is the best CZcams channel EVER. Like if you agree.
I totally agree, he really has it going on. Thus is the best by content and he writes back.
CZcams is telling creators make shorts...🙄 ... not backshed we get a movie 👍👍 almost as long as this comment😊
Hahahaha ,, I like them better than watching the junk on TV by far ,, and he explains in detail what and why and how to and he tells us if he doesn’t know and asks his viewers what they think ,, only a humble person would do that ,, ❤
The “short films” CZcams wants are for the majority of viewers nowadays that have an attention span shorter than the width of a gnat’s eyelash.
Those AP5s have heavy coating of red oxide from the factory , especially the Canadian body like you have there , they tend to rust less than most other valiants
The old girl's strutting her stuff. She knows she's not new, but she's looking and running as good as she can. For her age, she's got a lot to be proud of!!
love hearing the birds in the background joys of being in the country all the different sounds of nature
The best part of getting a classic old car to run, the beers at the end!.
Mick does much more than I could ever dream of, including making my wife erupt in peels of laughter, thank you!
Hahhahah cheers mate and cheers to your wife for finding my nonsense funny Hahha🍺🍺🍺
Best CZcams channel ever!!! No advertising, telling people to like and subscribe, grow the channel etc. just getting into it!!!
Keep it up Mick!! You are doing an amazing job!
Good to see young son helping out
Yeah I’ll take the help when he’s keen hahahah, then he runs off when he’s had enough and does 9yr old boy stuff Hahhaha. 🍺🍺
The advantage also of slanting these engines over was they could make the intake manifold runners long, that increases engine torque. Commonly known as the leaning tower of power.
Hey Mick
Love the old 225 tower of power !!!
She’s coming back real nice !
It’s amazing how good the old paint comes back
Thanks Mick !
A friend had a AP6 in early nintys had it breaking 15 sec qm for around 800 bucks. Good times for back then . A good wog chariot !
I drive a Valiant AP6 and I love it. I live in Wagga Wagga and I love to see you doing up old cars the government has a lot to answer for after they destroyed so many beautiful old cars in the 2000’s with the buy backs cars we payed $500 for are now worth $10,000 and cars we’d pay $10,000 are in the 50’s plus. The best thing about owning an old car is everyone loves them and they don’t go down in value they go up.
Huge credit to you mate. Love seeing our old history coming back to life. 👍
That’s the best video I’ve seen on CZcams all year. Bloody brilliant Mick!
Great vid! I had a 66 Regal, loved it, miss it. Great to see it coming back to life. Thanks from NZ.
So satisfying watching this beautiful old car be bright
Brought back to life. Thanks for yet another brilliant video.
Owned a 1965 Plymouth Valiant 200 and a 1966 Plymouth Valiant 100. Loved them
Love to see your kids involved. My kids spent time in the shed & worked on my projects. I'm now helping & motivating them to work on theirs
My girls (4), all adults now, had their own cars from around age 3. And spent a lot of the time in the shed with me either fixing or, in the case of my Charger, a complete strip down and rebuild. And I have to laugh when it's them that are far more capable of doing their own repairs or maintenance than any of their guys. Social media and gaming consoles have a lot to answer for. It's made idiots out a lot. My biggest laugh was when my then 12 year old daughter had to show her 23 year old brother in law how to change the oil, and a water pump, in his VR Commie. And this boy grew up on the land! 😀
My dad had an AP5 Regal Safari wagon and he would argue that it was the best and most reliable car he ever owned, albeit somewhat thirsty. So many memories as a kid and growing up with dad's Valiant. I wish I could find one, you just don't see AP5s anymore, I suppose almost all are gone now. If I could find a complete Valiant like this one I'd turn it into my retirement restoration project.
Yeah ya just don’t see them around, after I get this one back on the road it may be for sale mate as I can’t keep them all and I need the $ to buy the next rescue so to speak . I think of it as my job to put them back to a point where someone else can love on them.🍺🍺👍 you could contact me through Fb or Instagram Backshedmick if it’s of interest
Love the channel..reminds me of my childhood back in the days when we all worked on our cars helping others fix ya mates cars the good ol days.. keeping our culture alive💯💯💯🎯🎯🎯🎯
I love the way you put it that you will choose your battles when it comes to that gas tank. Lol that absolutely cracks me up
I’ve had some wins that took a tonne of effort but I’ve also had some amazing fails too hahahah patching tanks is never great 🍺🍺👍cheers for watching mate
I love how you can just take a car that most ppl would call a piece of shit & just throw it away but you can see potential & work on it & bring it back to life & get it going again 👍👍. Heaps of Respect 👍
Cheers Chris , yeah I do like to bring stuff back that to most looks gone🍺🍺👍 stick around mate there is some cool stuff coming.
Hey Mick. Talk about a blast from the past, mate. A mate of Dad's had one back in the day - same colour as that one as a matter of fact. Being the mid-70s, he got it repainted a lovely shade of Candy-apple Red metallic, dropped its nose so it looked 'raked' (another 70's fashion that "looked cool" but did absolutely nothing for the car's handling except ruin it) and put a set of Aunger Hustlers and a large exhaust and extractors on the beast. She ran the old Torqueflite tranny too and boy could that old bus haul arse! Always put a smile on my face to hear that thing wind up, as I loved my 6-pots even back then and being in it was awesome - especially when the trans made the jump to the next gear and you got the kick in the back as she started pulling away hard. I remember looking at it as a kid and thinking it would look better if the arse end was the same height as he made the nose, but I was equivocally told to go bag me head when I suggested it.....and what would a 7-year-old know anyway, eh?
It was great hearing the donk come around too - I think you started out being down at least a couple as she was a bit gallopy on turnover, but they came back around and now has a much more even cranking sound (albeit with the current ropey starter).....and it could be down to just an electrical misfire now. Them plugs and leads aren't exactly new off the shelf, eh....but man, what a ripper of an engine even on five and a half! Hope that bloody clutch breaks free for you though - are you sure she's moving the fork on the box? If she had brakes, you could try stalling it in first gear with the brake - get her up to about 10mph and then stomp the brake and let it go or stomp it and stall it so she rocks on the clutch plate. Mind you, if she's been in the hay since the mid-80s as you suspect, chances are she's a box-out job with a chisel and four-pounder or maybe a jackhammer, eh? What a bugger.
Man, that old paint came back good! Did the 1500-grit trick with my Stag, although I started with 600 then 1000 because there was some pimpling in the paint that the 1500 wouldn't shift. Car had been repainted around 1985 and man, could you smell it when the sandpaper got into it! Brought the paint up terrific though - and even though it was crazed in a couple of places, she looked a million dollars better than she had with the old oxidised and pimply topcoat. Love how the inside of the doors and everything on the Val came around too, man. Just a pity about them floors, eh. Got my cars parked outside at the moment and with them all having leaky windscreens and Auckland going through the monsoon season (commonly known locally as "winter"), I lifted the carpet and underlay in all of them and put it on the seats before drilling a couple of holes in the lowest part of front and rear floorpans on each side. Will put bungs in them when I pull the cars back inside, but for now, water goes in, washes the dirt off the painted floors and goes out the holes again, so I'm a happy camper!
Enjoyed that one a lot, mate. Don't see many APs around any more at all - they used to be as common as muck and usually with the lower four inches of both rear guards missing.....and from what you showed sitting behind the bung on the inner guard, its not surprising why. Will look forward to the next instalment on this beasty. All the best
Mick, the 225's had some go compared with the 149/179 reds just released in 63 - that's why the reputation I reckon.
Mate, that was some trip down memory lane. Thanks champ.
As usual Mick, you've done another awesome episode. Love the old Val, worth everything you put into it.
Also when my Backshed notification comes up, and I get time after dinner, nothing can bother me while I watch the episode and learn from your brilliant journey.
Keep it up Mick!
Till next time🍻
Appreciate your channel so much, thought I'd better put the money where my mouth is and purchased a red flano. Thanks again Mick🍺
@@backshed5295 Mick received the flano, its awesome, love it. Have an awesome weekend, mate
Thanks
James🍺🍺🍺
Dad bought one of these when I was in high school and used to drive it to school! Everyone laughed at me every time I filled up the radiator (had a hole) to go home!! BUT they did not have cars so I had the last laugh everyday as I drove out the carpark past the bus line!!!!
Thanks Mick for the movie length Valiant special feature.
I’m in bali surfing and that was the best way to wait for the tide change.
I’m a huge valiant fan and really enjoyed that keep it coming✌️
I've been hanging for the Valiant episode for ages thanks Mick! 👍
I'm only half way thru.....and you haven't surprised yourself with anything hot....well done! 😂
The old Valiants have wicked styling, can't wait to see Old Timer come back to life! 👍🍺
The hard work you put into transforming your cars is amazing!. I’ve got a 58 Mark2 Zephyr that I’m inspired to give a polish! haha. 2 hours went quick and as per usual awesome episode on the Valiant. Thanks Michael
Another great show and good to see the "apprentice" getting stuck in. Hope to see you again soon, Mick.
Won’t be long mate , back at work now but stick around for the next as it’s an Aussie icon.🍺👍
Great episode Mick. These 225 slants are bullet proof like you've been told. Mopar "guru" Uncle Tony over on Uncle Tony's Garage has oodles of respect for them. Love the way that long branch inlet looks ( engine is almost as good looking as 250 2V Ford, but not quite).
Maybe not the prettiest of cars but a more trustworthy you won't find, you have done an amazing job.
Central California watching
Cheers mate thanks for watching from the states and please share with your buddies over there🍺👍
Long live the leaning tower of power! And the tavo .cheers mate, more please.
I've had a '68 Valiant Regal sedan since I was 19. I'm 40 now, and it's garaged at my old's. Body needs TLC but mech it's very good and the interior was retrimmed about 15 years ago. Hoping I'll get to it again some day.
In 1966, my dad could have bought a brand new HR Holden or XR Falcon, but opted for a new VC Valiant wagon. He felt it offered the best six of the trio. The Valiant was probably also the biggest in terms of space and towing capacity.
In the 60's, the Valiants were the best cars on the market.......and sold well.
After 1971 with the ungainly and bloated VH, sales began a steady slide.
Another backshed movie awesome work as always mate, keep up the good shit 🤙🍻
Anytime mate just finished the video and noticed you have flannels for sale definalty going to be getting myself a few, the grinder has chewed threw my current ones haha 👍🤙
Great episode
It’s great when kids can come and help out .
Those times will be cherished memories
Ps cleaning out car’s & trucks I find it a rewarding day 👍
Cheers mate , when they’ve had enough ( all 3 of my kids help at times) they go play or do their things but when they are keen I’ll take their involvement and hopefully they might learn something. 🍺🍺👍
IMO, the 225 Slant Six is one of the best sixes from that era in Australia, hands down. That thing could take you over the Nullabor and back without skipping a beat. It looks amazing bud.
Late to this video, but a pleasure to watch, many memories working on my uncle's AP5 with my old man and my cousin way back in the day.. by the way the ride height looks fine to me.. lowered enough cars, too many issues.. cracked extractors, approaching speed bumps at an angle, can't put any weight in, blah blah.. rant over.. looks good, another oldie saved. Actually love the fact they are everyday family cars that were the first to be forgotten.. Most Aussies might have dreamed of a GT or Monaro, but drove a Falcon or Kingswood or regular Valiant.. love it.. J.
Loved watching the old girl come back to life. Brought back memories of several old VEs. These Valiants were sensational cars. I'm guess that gearbox is a Borg Warner? In auto the good old Torqueflites were indestructible. Thanks for sharing this with us and hope to see more soon.
Great show Mick. I was not confident that the engine was going to go and if it did I was thinking that there was internal damage with the blow by it had in the beginning. But you certainly surprised me by reviving it back to life. Looking forward to your videos and I will watch it again like I do with all of them.
Yeah that blow by worried me to but about 20litres of fuel idling and 4 or 5 heat cycles and it’s settling down. Never give up on them mate, somebody loved that car as she was pretty clean inside the engine despite what I expected 🍺🍺👍
Don't normally comment on anyone's video often, but as a fellow Aussie of vintage. Your video's are bloody fantastic mate & @1:23:59 I'm damn sure you are the first person to strip those doors since it was built, also pretty sure you're right about the "AP" designation. A Bloke I worked with 30 plus years ago had a Push Button Auto AP-5, the buttons were on the dashboard. Anyway, cheers, Leo.
Cheers Leo thanks for watching mate and I reckon your right on the doors, just make it all the more worthy of saving. 🍺👍
She is looking pretty sweet! Almost looked like a completed restoration in that last dusk shot before the end. Never had much experience with Valiants, they seemed to be a little shunned compared to the Fords and Holden's of similar era (the cars in reach of a boys first car in the late 70's, early 80's.) I love that instrument cluster! So weird the temp and petrol gauge were almost acting like the amp gauge should have. Also I imagine that sun visor would be pretty rare. I remember pulling off the one that came with my XK Falcon to replace it with a vinyl strip with 'Ford' written on it. As a good bloke once said 'At no stage did I say I was smart' ha ha Very much enjoying these videos mate. Thank you for taking the time to share. Wonderful work.
My first car was a 1963 Plymouth Valiant slant 6 3 on the tree. Loved it
Brilliant episode showing your skills and persistence to get the ap5 mobile very informative and brilliant diagnosis of this old car
2 hour movie👍so going to comment as we go. You’re got yourself a really good one mick, engines are good and solid, anyway stop commenting and keep watching
The bird life is a great background soundtrack.
Even heard the crow saying aarrk or maybe that was in the bloopers, can’t remember.
Great job on ol Val
My dad had a 64 AT4 Dodge 1 tonne truck with a 225 slant 6 back in the 70s
After a valve job it never missed a beat for the next 10 years of ownership .
No frills but very reliable and thirsty just like Lindsay.
What a ripper the old Valiant you just need a couple of fuzzy dices nothing beats you these are great engines too
Awesome Valiant! sixes sounded the most like v8s in valiants.
Love your work mate!
Love your show mate, excellent job on the old Val.
Look forward to more of your episodes, keep it up.👍👍
Just love watching your videos, its great content. Don't know much about cars in Australia but I must admit I like the ones you have done up to now, please keep it coming.
Mate, now the end of the video and it looks beautiful. Mate your should be real proud of what you have accomplished, well done and can't wait for the next installment.
Hey mate, you probably already know this, but I have a linseeded ute, there’s a product called penetrol flood, it’s at Bunnings. It’s 50/50 linseed oil and fancy chemicals. The sheen lasts way longer than just linseed oil, and your rags don’t catch on fire which is good
Awesome the old Val couldn’t be in better hands have an AP5 myself cheers 🍻
thanks for the Val i love the old slanters. we used one for a stockcar for years couldn't kill it
As always , loved it. My mum had one. And it was a V8. Nobody knows how that got in there. Love your content
Hey Mick, love this one! I have a Hemi 245 in the 77 Dodge truck I'm doing up, bit newer than the slant 6. Lots of work ahead. But love the 225! Cheers for the video.
Great episode. So easy to work on old skool cars. Also, great to see the young fella helping out. Lasting memories for both of ya’s.
Did anyone else notice the tobacco smoke stain on the roof liner above the driver? Reminds me of being a kid in the 60's! Another grand video Mick
Looks like you were almost heading to the A&E with all them lacerations rocking on them extremities!!! Excitement dulls the pain. Been there many times!!!
As a kiwi across the ditch, I love what you do a lot of the I
Old cars takes me back to my love of holdens l have owned
Yeah i must admit a lot of my want to save these cars is about memories.🍺👍
great job michael keep up the great work cant wait for the next video on old val
Won’t be long mate , just waiting on rear floor pans . Tank and fronts are here then I’m back into it🍺🍺👍
2 hours?
Mint.
Hahhaha yeah that’s my young blokes job he loves it . There done now hahah🍺👍
Have just found your channel and find it very refreshing to finally find someone who gets it that these old cars need to be properly cleaned so many don't do it keep up the great work I have a lot of videos to catch up on also being in Australia nice to hear Magpies in the background. Cheers

I'd almost forgotten that song of the Valiant starter. No n no no n no n never never nevverrrrr.
Bloody good, Michael 👍🏻 That really brings back memories of early wrecking yard days. How do you say Chrysler Valiant in Maltese? …. Coomba Valenti ….? Dunno, anyway enough talking….get into it 😂
Hi Mick great to see you back on again really enjoy your show John
from Cowes VIC
I was watching this vid last Saturday arvo Mick and paused at 1;56. went to get some brews and gas bottle, while paying for the swap n go my EA Spac wasn't there when I expected it to be. Some flog drove it 600km and burnt it out. It was a 30th Anniversary Falcon Spac. And gone in 60seconds. I've had it 12yrs and been a great car. I was really hoping to come home and watch the end of this vid, but took me until now to do so. Love your work man. I grew up in a AP5 mum called it Mary don't be scary. Cheers.
Jas I can’t tell ya how much that sucks to hear that mate. Those pieces of crap people are out there.
@@backshed5295 I didn't want to put a dampener on you, just saying. Be careful with and where you are. I'll get along fine and back into my Quey as we speak.
Yet another movie length episode well done again keep them coming. And thanks for the T shirt it fits great, good quality and yes I have it on now Cheers oh and the sticker was a great surprise as well thanks
Cheers mate thanks for the online order and of coarse coming back to watch another 🍺🍺👍
Nice work. Excellent work. Really enjoy your videos. And I learn heaps. Thanks.
