Agree with the studio. I replied in the previous reaction that this was not a good choice for the concert. The vocals are just too much to reproduce live...and the sound was not mixed well. The video is kind of a Swedish thing, to me anyway. Reminds me somewhat of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. I like your comment on the lighting.

Abba is about true feelings . Proper music production . They are Legends . They have a Stadium Dedicated to their new Digital Avatar Show . Who cares about the special effects on KPop videos . Abba it's all about the music only what they transmit .you cannot make comparisons on these guys ever . Nobody is like them and never will .
So special effects and kpop is the new big thing. It's huge. The younger generation absolutely loves it. I like some of it too. ABBA is def trying for a comeback but I don't think theyll overtake Kpop as a genre unless somehow they're able to connect with gen y and z.

First time I see the video for this song. Excellent job by the director. The song seems more "meaningful" than in the "audio version". And let's be honest: watching the two girls in itself is a pleasure & a treat.
They have more advanced and much more elaborate music videos nowdays then back in the 70s but the music was way better then..especially ABBA...and after all,the music is what counts the most...concerning the music video,advanced or not advanced, I liked it...

I agree with the reaction comments. When we view these classic song videos we have to remember that there were no real computers back then, cell phones, and the complex video capabilities that we have today.
technology has made huge bounds. I try to remember it as much as possible. Makes me respect these singers a lot more though. They legit needed skill and talent not just a pretty face.

Glad you listened to the original song. I think one of their masterpieces. Video's not bad, goes well with the songs lyrics, and has a scandi darkish bergman vibe, but songs as abba's creations always come first.

For me ABBA is a studio group. The sound is so sophisticated (specially for that time) and complex it is allmost impossible to recreate it live. The video's are not so sophistated compared to nowadaya BUT they where the first one that uses videoclips like that! They didnt tour much. Agnetha didnt like it because of her young children. (They are sweet common people, and didnt care for fame and the lifestyle that goes with that. That makes them even more admirable in my opinion!)
I watched this documentary on the development of the music video. This was like 20 years ago just to be clear. but it was talking about how Michael Jackson's thriller was like the very first huge mv that just changed the game.
Michael Jackson and Madonna tend to be overhyped for me. Thriller was meant to be a kind of story video I suppose, which is quite a literal way to interpret music. There was plenty of imaginative technique in MVs before that. I suppose that may have been the most expensive one at that time (?), but money isn't everything.
Watch " ABBA in concert " clips here on YT and you will find out they are an amazing live band, and an amazing filming from a concert
This was ABBA at their finest. Huge hit worldwide including 5weeks at No1 in the UK. Fun fact .... they we're standing on revolving flower pots for those "turning around" shots.

This version, live version from Wembley and live version from Stockholm 1981 - all are pure gem.
Older music videos tend to suck? I very much disagree. I appreciate the understated storytelling of yesteryears videos, sometimes less is more. There's so much calmness and melancholy in that video, its like a sad beautiful poem put on film. The term "Music Video" wasn't really a thing until 1981 with the advent of MTV. Prior to that they were called short films , were used to promote artist songs and were usually shown on T.V. variety shows. Music companies were not throwing tons of money into making these short films. They were usually done quickly and cheaply. It wasn't till the mid eighties when thet started getting more expensive, and if I'm not mistaken Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" was the catalyst. Todays music videos are all "Bells and whistles" used to distract and cover up the lack of talent of a lot of todays modern performers. You can't even appreciate the storytelling (And I use that term loosely) and choreography of todays modern videos because of the quick as a flash editing. Its like they were edited with a chainsaw. Singers from the prior generations didn't need all that "Pomp and Circumstance" because they could sell a song with just their stage presence, talent and charisma.
I've never been that happy with the live recording of this song, as it sounds slow and uninspired ...it's the only ABBA live recording that I've never really liked that much. But the original recording: bliss! 💖

I just knew you would like this Jay, and yes, all of ABBA's videos were not very elaborate and were made with a very small budget. If I remember correctly, the video for"One Of Us" was made in Lasse Hallstrom's apartment, and this song was their last major hit, and the last #1 single.
For me the ABBA music videos are perfect. Essentially the group was two beautiful and engaging women who just happened to be world-class singers, and two fantastic songwriters. When the talent and beauty is so evident, what else does a music video need to show? No special effects needed.
Thanks for the reaction. The thing about these songs that puzzle me is though the girls sing them the guy's wrote them. You should do "One Of Us". It features Agnetha and is after the divorce. But keep in mind that Bjorn wrote the lyrics and had her sing it. It almost seems cruel and you have to wonder what she was thinking. But maybe I just read too much into this stuff. Maybe it's all just songs and nothing to do with them. And yeah your right about the videos. They just weren't done back then. They had a big part in starting that stuff. Thanks again.
Yeah the relationships gotta be complicated. I mean to be married and in the same group the pressure has got to be out of this world. I think we kinda judge famous couples a lot for how things turn out but they're human just like us living a life that very few people live. I'm not sure how its tough but I could see how it could be super duper tough.
Never saw the video, I like it. Musically it sounded way better than the live version.

At 3.32 on your reaction video, the bit where the girls are back to back and rotating, this 'special effect' was achieved by them sitting in a large plant pot on wheels, and 2 blokes spun it while Lasse filmed them lip- syncing. So yes, very basic by today's standards, yet effective.
Effective is effective right. It’s come a long way though.
I doubt they would have called it a special effect.
Their studio productions are their very best works. Even Bjorn would rather work in the studio than go on tour.

As you say you are used to high standard music videos, I wonder if you have seen any from Sabaton? They are a swedish powermetal band singing about historical things from all over the world but mostly centered around warfare.
Some of their videos have a fantastic production value. Like "Bismarck" or "night witches the animated story"
If you like rock music with a lot of energy you could check them out.

The other break up songs you have to react to are One of Us and When all is said and done.
One of my favorite songs. Frida had tonsilitis during the Wembley concerts, and she was quite a driving force in their live performances, so their Wembley album is relatively weak (though she was excellent in e.g. the live performances of Fernando and I have a dream). The live rendition of the song from The Dick Cavett show is a far better, just to let you know.
But, in overall, the live cd from Wembley is quite badly produced, unfortunately.

I think this and Money Money Money are among the director's best videos at interpreting ABBA songs. Here the lyrics are straightforward enough and he concentrates on the interaction of the 4 group members, showing how their vocal parts are interlinked, and of course relating the two couples to the theme. The way the different singers are at angles to each other reminds some of the kind of blocking Ingmar Bergman did in his films. Of course it's on film not video, video only came into mainstream use by the 80s.
The music is always more important to me than videos. I couldn't really watch videos to songs I don't like. Certainly there's plenty of new techniques that came in, with the onset of video and then of computers. But however clever a video is how can it make up for ordinary music? Maybe they have to market many songs now in clever enticing visual ways because the music just isn't enough on its own.
Most Kpop I don't like now, same with Jpop. I've actually liked more Thai music in the last decade or more, maybe they don't do great videos normally but they don't have to. One of the better Kpop songs I've heard AND seen recently is Love Bomb by Fromis9, the music inspires a decent video. You probably know it, but if you don't I recommend reacting to it.

I had a strong feeling you’d like this version better than that awful live version. Gotta say, I’m partial to 80’s videos as those were my teen years.
The two couples were actually on the verge of divorce at this time so it makes the song more poignant. Their real lives were a drama.
Not the first time you react first to a live song and then the studio version and change your opinion, so in the future do the opposite for you not be disappointed by the first reaction. 😉. A cool music video can not replace a good melody. Not even a bit. However, the opposite is true as the video is only there to boost the melody. In fact, it's all about melody, instrumental performance and production and of course the lyrics. I have noticed that you often put 90% of your assessment on the lyrics and the video itself, which makes you a boring and uninteresting reviewer .. I'm sorry. (You're not alone).
My tip to you, is to better analyze what comes in through your ears instead .. countermelodies, hooks, bass play, chord progressionsm, bridges, vocal performance and dynamics etc. This applies to all pop music since the Beatles, and is exactly what music review is all about.
Thanks for the honest comment. But I think you should watch more videos. I dont do too many MVs. I talk a lot about countermelodies and hooks but people don't like it trust me. If you don't believe me look at my sub count. People rather see huge over exaggerated facial reactions and they don't ever want you to down play the song.

IDK, I think it’s 7os kitschy fantastic. Most didn’t have videos in ‘77. The song aged well compared to some early 80s big haired, over synth’d pop.

I like that part with the interacting vocals. Agnetha's part is softer and like a sotto voce thought/whisper answering or reinforcing Frida. Not hysterical to me.
@@11dsw All eras have good or not so good, and have their own styles which people should adapt to. The chart stuff these days is about as kitchy or cheesy as you can get, so hard to criticise past chart music as being that when it's normally better.
@@starry2006 ... you’re right. Today’s music, forget it. The 60s and 70s were so fantastic. The 1980s, after the advent of MTV, I think the music suffered for a bit. It became more about aesthetics and less about the music. I’m an 80s and 90s guy but I believe the 1970s was the peak of most genres.
