One of the most confusing aspects of gesture drawing is that it is an abstraction which does not imply a necessary relation to the parts of the object being drawn. So what do you do with it after you have drawn it in? Using opposite C's which more or less are edges of the form is very helpful, as is the idea that a line of action expresses the orientation of the three major masses (and often a limb or two). (I'm assuming you're talking about the line of action here), it depends on your goal for your gesture. If the goal is to practice eye-hand coordination you leave it as is, since the goal for that kind of drawing isn't the end result but the improved eye-hand coordination (throw-away drawings). If the goal is to keep building on top of the drawing with more info to create a quick-sketch, then you'll want to make your beginning marks are faint. This is where drawing with the side of your pencil is super useful, as those marks can become integrated into subsequent passes more easily. Not every line in a "finished" drawing has to represent a "thing" as in edges of limbs or muscles, some marks are there to add energy and life. I hope this helps!

That's a great sentence! With gesture we bring connection, energy and life to our drawings. We do this by paying attention to the line of action, building rhythmic lines that lead into each other and by streamlining our marks to CSI lines. If our goal is to have a drawing that looks structured, as in specific, concretely proportioned and realistically viable, we need to focus more on good shapes and clear form in our drawing. When we do this, we often do it at the expense of the gesture. Think of those manequinized drawings of the figure. They describe the form clearly but can easily lack life. For a successful quick sketch, we want to combine enough gesture-based marks with enough form- and shape -based marks so we get a nice blend of energy and structure. The problem is that many people use the word gesture when they mean quick sketch. Hope this helps!
