Its here finally, the brand new FX30 camera. Finally we get to see a pro APS-C (Super 35mm) camera from Sony. I personally love shooting on Super 35mm camera. Because it is light weight. And I always love compact cameras. Especially APS-C lenses are a lot smaller. And also very affordable.
So some people may wonder why FX30? It’s an APS-C camera? You could easily find a Sony full frame camera for that price tag, such as the A7III. First of all, I don’t just look at the sensor size. For me is tall about the usability and also the overall image quality. In most of the situation yes full frame has the advantage of APS-C camera. But if you use the right lenses. The result can be very similar.
Overall, I love the FX30. Although the rolling shutter was pretty bad. And the 4K 120p has a massive crop on top of a 1.5x APS-C crop. And it doesn’t look as sharp as the normal 4K 24p/25p or 50p/60p. But for the price range, I think its acceptable.

Any tips for color grading?
Great video - Composition and song top notch! If conditions permit, please attach the Sigmas f1.4 (16, 30 and 56mm - any of them). I'm considering buying a FX30 but I'm so used to my beloved A7 III (yes - not the S III nor the IV !!)... Yes, 8-bit... But it's sooo reliable! What can convince me to go for the FX30 (I have the A6400 and ZVE10 also) would be less noise on higher ISOs - that 1.4 lenses can address - AND confirm that 10-bit really makes a difference against 8-bit.
Don't know about the lens performance but 10 bit definitely makes a difference over 8 bit. There's no question if you want to take your colour further.
Anyone starting out in filmmaking should watch all your "video tests" to learn composition and camera movement. Now, two questions: Did you use a gimbal for the wide, moving shots (15mm) and a tripod/fluid head for the long, panning shots (70-200mm)? And did you apply any stabilization, either in-camera or in-post? Many thanks Steve! Keep them coming.
Thank you very much, really appreciated it . For all the 15mm wide shots, I had it on a gimbal plus the camera IBIS turned on. And for all the long tele shots, I had it on a tripod. The reason why it was so smooth because it was shot on 4K 50p and slowed down to 25p 😊

Did you overexposed slog3? Or it isnt needed with this camera?
Yea, I did overexposed for S-log 3, otherwise the footage would be very noisy

Nice footage and interesting opinion. A lot of youtubers claim the rolling shutter in this camera is very good but I don"t thinks it is. Sensor size is smaller but overall weight is almost the same like in FX3 :) I am a big fan compositions in your frames.
Thank you very much. Yea I don’t think the rolling shutter was that good at all. And the FX30 is 562g and the FX3 is 640g. Normally Sony APS-C cameras would be smaller and lighter. But this time Sony uses the same body. So they were similar 😊
Sensor readout speed seems to be around 15ms- not great - but not terrible... I haven't found it very noticeable in the footage I have seen on-line (including lots of fast moving objects) - but if you look for it with fast whip pans and vertical objects it is evident.

What kind of magic did you do with the 15mm 1.4 lens? I mean, that lens is pretty clinical, but the image (as example at 1:10) is definitely not. It looks amazing.

Thank you very much, really appreciated. For image quality, the R8 will have slightly better image due to the full frame sensor. But for controls, and usability. The FX30 would be a better choice 😊
@@dsipictures I care most about image. But having the ability to shoot slog3 with an internal LUT means I may not need to grade. Could be huge.

So quick question for the zoom rocker: Is it I wanna say variable where as if I press harder, it zooms faster and lighter pressure means it zooms slower? I would have a Sony power zoom lens mounted on there. Thanks and I'm wondering if this would be better than a camcorder for railfanning as I'm constantly zooming in and out and moving the camera.

Ive been looking, but cant seem to find a answer. Can i adapt my rf glass to the e mount? I just have a lot of 3rd party rf lenses i absolutely love and would like to be able to continue using them.

Great video I’m still learning the concept of ISO. So even though the base iso is 800/2500 you can still shoot between or higher than those. I see you went up past the base ISO’s so for example if I I raise the base iso from 800 to 1000 to brighten up the image thats ok? I’m only asking because people keep saying 800 or 2500.
Thanks. You don’t have to stick with ISO 800 or ISO 2500. But just when you shoot at those native ISOs, you get the best performance in dynamic range. You can always shoot at ISO 400 or ISO 1600 no problem. And 90% of the time you can’t really tell the difference 😉😊

After looking at a bunch of reviews, I still don't
made a choice. I have never owned a high end camera and want to get into video production.
I will mainly shoot urban landscapes, possibly video portraits in beautiful locations.
My top favorites are:
Fuji Film XT3 ( really like the colors )
Canon 90D and Canon m6 mark 2, but Canon has a little repulsive image, white haze, maybe it can be edited in post production.
You have a lot of experience in this business, I think you could tell me the best option in my situation, my budget is about $ 1300

how do i get less noise in shadows and no lens blur when shooting indoors that require iso greater than 800? I filmed with iso 2500 and there was noise, could it be the opening in the lens? 1.4

I think, looking from your own tests, x-H2 actually looked better then FX30, imo. The tonality, colors, just better on Fuji. Still, FX30 has great ergonomics

It was set to “day light” white balance. But the video was mostly shot around the golden hour. So the overall image was a bit warm ☺️

Yea, the first base ISO on the FX30 is 800. Then the second one is 2500 ☺️
