    In this episode Daniel and Mick follow up to a show from February 2016 where we put a genuine vintage Echoplex EP-3 up against some more modern delay pedals.
    For this instalment we’ve swapped out the Echoplex for the modern production equivalent - a Fulltone Solid State Tape Echo - and selected the three new pedals for comparison for which we’ve had most requests. As you’ll hear, there are some spectacular performers in today’s video.

    17:11 - 17:45 followed by Mick saying "that's a VERY inspiring sound" made me invest into the Belle Epoch because I was truly blown away by the grandeur and character of that sound!

    The Belle sounds amazing - it's close, but I'd say it's the best of the bunch (of the 3 to the left of the Fulltone SS). It does such an incredible job at mimicking real tape echo.

    • @shred5
      @shred5 Před 11 měsíci

      I love my Belle Epoch so much that I considered upgrading to the Deluxe, mainly for tap tempo until I learned the Deluxe isn't quite the same pedal and is typically a little harsher. Even if you minimize the "tape" effects and run it clean, it's a very warm sounding delay but has a very natural sound - most warm ones don't sound natural to me. The Strymon is a great full featured pedal but if you run it clean, it sounds just like a Carbon Copy (great pedal, but not really warm)
      I really like the Wampler Tape Echo too.

    I prefer the El Cap, I actually like it more then real tale echo, i know crazy but true, the spring reverb is the icing on the cake, nothing better then a spring at end of the signal chain especially after taoe delay, the El Cap is a modern day classic.

    With the Strymon Favorite switch (add-on), you can toggle between two sounds. So you could have a tight echo + reverb, then switch to a long delay with modulation. Not many pedals can offer that (without resorting to a huge box with presets and banks.) I wish more builders would add a "Favorite" feature - it's like having two pedals in one.

    Update on the El Capistan reverb trick. Settings are both switches up, Time at 11:00, Mix anywhere between 11:00 & 2:00. You can use Tape Age, Repeats, and Wow & Flutter, but it will pull delays in... especially the Repeats knob. However, switches both up, and both Time and Mix knobs (in the suggested settings) turn the El Capistan into a useable spring reverb.

    With the Echoplex delay, only the delay signal has the pre-amp effect. You can run the seperate pre-amp pedal in front to affect your dry signal too. I would have liked the pre-amp in the delay to be switchable all on or off, but I prefer it the way it is to having the pre-amp always on colouring the whole signal.

    • @cenovita
      @cenovita Před 8 lety +1

      With the belle epoch you can choose having the pre-amp always on, this allows the delay trails to keep running after the effect is disengaged . I use it as a buffer in the middle of my pedal chain, I'm so happy with it. I bough a Zero point Tape flanger from Catalinbread as well, quite happy with Them. Both work better with 18V.

    Spot on Mick! The compander is exactly compression and Expander, the signal is compressed before recording and expanded during playback. It is a commonly used technique in telecommunication to minimize signal to noise ratio, and to transmit signals over a limited dynamic range :p

    The preamp on the Maestro echoplex EP3 has a magical sound that the Fulltone can’t duplicate. While the Fulltone is a good tape delay the EP3 has that elusive sound that I have never been able to find with anything else and God knows I’ve tried. Even the EP4 did not possess this preamp sound. I love your show, keep up the great work.

  • @jamiegetslost

    I've owned all three of the pedals in this video, Plus have some (very limited) experience with a Real EP-3..
    First of all the El CAP is a great pedal beyond the point.. I love all of strymon's stuff.. The flint being one of my all time favorite pedals..
    But honestly the Belle is the closest thing to tape that i’ve found in pedal format.. in particular the tape machine that it was designed to model, I mean it literally nails the sound..
    The el cap to me sounds off.. It always sounded like it was missing something.. Maybe it’s the lack of a preamp circuit, the fact that it’s not going for a particular sound.. It’s more or less just the general idea of tape machines in general, or it could be just how clean the repeats sound. I don’t know It just doesn’t have whatever it is that made these machines so special..
    The so called “echoplex” pedal sounded decent but it honestly did not have the character of a real tape machine..Sure it sounds good but it doesn’t have the same feel like a real EP-3 does if that makes any since Not to mention the pre amp isn’t always on like it is in the Belle..
    Edit: I just want to add to this. The Belle really leaves nothing out. including all of the bad features of EP-3.. (gritty repeats, unpredictable modulation, artifacts in the background) if you want a authentic EP-3 experience i really don't think anything comes as close, unless you go out and buy a real tape machine.

    • @MikeTaffet
      @MikeTaffet Před 8 lety +2

      I too own the Belle and love the character of the repeats. However I find the preamp lops off a fair amount of treble, so if you have a fuzz ahead of the pedal it looses a lot of the bite from the fuzz. If there were a way to switch the preamp on or off independent of the repeats it would be amazing. Or even just a dip switch to allow a bit more highs through

    Hi Guys, I wanted to thank you for this video comparison. I've recently been downsizing all of my pedals but Delay is the one effect that I MUST have in my rig. I've been using the Strymon El Cap for years and it's a fantastic pedal, but I've been looking for something a bit simpler (and smaller) that I can set and forget. I ended up buying the Echoplex (pedal) based on this review and within a few seconds of playing it, I knew I had made the right decision. In fact, I ordered a second one for my rig this morning. Thank you again for this great video. You saved me a lot of time and money! Brilliant!

    Owned an El Capistan because most seemed to like it, I didn't. Just got myself a Belle Epoch Deluxe and frankly nothing comes remotely close if genuine 70's tape echo is your goal. All of the extra features such as tap tempo and (digital) spring reverb are just unnecessary fluff. The El Cap is a great digital delay, but it just didn't satisfy my craving for vintage tape like the Belle Epoch preamp and spaceship sounds did.

  • @roadshowautosports
    @roadshowautosports Před 4 lety +2

    Love your channel and the enthusiasm you have on every review or demo!
    I own the CatalinBread and was curious on how it performed compared to the el capistan and echoplex onde but I’m pretty happy with my choice thanks to you! We appreciate your help on deciding or reassuring our choices!
    Two details you didn’t mention about the belle epoch is that it also has a vibrato you must activate by removing power then turning mod knob to max and then reconnecting power. After that you can adjust your modulation at your likes. Cycling power without turning mod to max will deactivate it. It affects only the echoes as well. It’s neat and gives a different ambience to the sound.
    The second is that you can switch between true bypass or buffered bypass using an internal switch under the cover, close by the preamp gain trimpot.
    Cheers guys!

    LOVE my El Capistan! And I'm looking forward to getting the new Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe and Epoch Pre when I can! I'd like to point out, however, that the narrowing bandwidth and repeats getting "thinner" instead of "darker" (as per what is brought up around 15.32 in this vid) heard from the Belle Epoch here is easily dialed-in on the El Capistan via combination settings of its Low End Contour, Tape Bias, and Tape Age controls. Throw in some heavy amounts of Repeats, Wow & Flutter, and Tape Crinkle for an even more delicious effect! See the El Cap's manual for suggested settings as starting points for your own echoscapes. Extreme brightening, crispy sounding settings really turn this into a downright elicit Dub/Reggae echo machine.

    • @CaevanOShite
      @CaevanOShite Před 7 lety +2

      For more dynamic range, 'fidelity', and headroom on the El Capistan, and to more closely match the SSTE:
      Set the Tape Bias ("hidden" function under the Repeats) to about 9:00 O'Clock. Then-
      Turn the Tape Crinkle ("hidden" function under the Wow & Flutter knob) all the way off (fully counter-clockwise); adjust Wow & Flutter to taste. Then-
      Dial the El Cap's Low End Contour ("hidden" function under the Tape Age knob) counter-clockwise; fully counter-clockwise for maximum low-end in the repeats, up from there to thin them out with less and less lows per repeat. Then-
      Rotate the Tape Age control all the way down, counter-clockwise, for brightest, clearest, cleanest, freshest tape-tone. Alternately, roll Tape Age back a little to taste for a warmer echo tone that better balances the lows and low-mids in the repeats for more emphasis on the full range.
      Set the Repeats fairly high, and the Mix low-to-medium, so that you can hear many repeats flowing away like a river underneath your 'straight' signal; Tape Age turned up for brighter tone and clarity at lower Mix levels can enhance this.
      You may also want to deploy the El Capistan's available +3db Boost via the secondary-function of the Mix knob, which, depending on the rest of your rig, might yield even more perceived headroom. The virtual Spring Reverb, faithful to a fault at replicating the Roland Space Echo's spring-reverb, would probably best be left off or very minimally dialed-in for our purposes here.

  • @ChrisDN
    @ChrisDN Před 8 lety +4

    Absolutely nailed every reason why I love my Belle Epoch.
    Gonna be interesting to see what you think of the Replicator when you get it. I've tried it against both the Fulltone Tube Tape and the Solid State Echos in the store I work at and actually prefer it. I think I'm in the minority though, but I adore darker/noisier delays.

  • @stephengaren2219
    @stephengaren2219 Před 4 lety

    You can dial out the delay by turning off the Tape Age, Repeats, Wow & Flutter, and setting both toggle switches to Multi (if memory serves me correctly) when using the spring reverb effect on the El Capistan. The Mix control then controls the amount of springiness. I'm pretty sure that's how I worked it on mine. It's 3 am here now, so I'm going strictly on memory. I'll mess with it later and report back. I do know, however, that the spring reverb feature can be used on it's own if that's all that's needed in certain situations.

      The El Capistan is awesome. I'm a delay nut, even own a '79 Space Echo. It's not too perfect, unless you want that sound. There are tons of secondary controls to dirty it up, in terms of age/wow/flutter/crinkle/etc. Great pedal. It's I hi-fi, in that it is a 24 bit 96kHz conversation, but again, ways to grunge it up. Plus, unlike other delays, it has an analog dry path, so it never converts your signal. Can't say enough good things about it. The Catlinbread Echo Rec is fucking sweet, though.

      'Plus, unlike other delays, it has an analog dry path, so it never converts your signal.' None of these other delays convert the dry signal to digital, in fact its rare for any to do so these days. Ironically the only one I can think of off hand is the Strymon Deco, which uses digital modelling for its drive section and thereby eliminates the analog dry thru.

    I’d be grateful for an episode on Pedals vs Real Spring Reverb. I think you once stated something along the lines of that there were not any decent digital pedals with spring reverb sounds, still true?
    I’d like you to put the pedals up against both a spring reverb in an amp like a Deluxe Reverb or Twin, and an outboard 63' Fender Valve Reverb (with 3 knobs) or similar (let me know if you need to borrow one). I think its more interesting to compare with digital pedals than pedals that have actual springs in. Thanks!

      Well, I like the Boss '63 Fender Reverb really much. However, that unit can be very intense with high Mix and Dwell values and just like the real unit, it can distort. So, it can provide those surf sounds.
      But with low Dwell, Mix values it reminds me on the sound of a Fender amp's reverb.

    The El Capistan isn’t trying to be an EP-3. It’s trying to be a unit that imparts tape echo on your sound, which it does beautifully. It’s very thorough in that. It’s almost its own thing.

    I had an original tube Echoplex in the green/gray box (sold it and am sorry) and ti was as great as everyone says it is. Of course, it was unreliable and quirky and all that, but oh, the sound. Dan, I';m with you - tape echo rules. Well, I still needed a good "tape echo" so I tried the EL Cap and it was very good and very versatile, but I found it to be a bit sterile. Then I tried the Belle Epoch (yes, Catalinbread's stuff is always fab) and I was just blown away. It really does sound like my old tube EP, but no quirks (unless you want to dial them in) and it always works the same every time, no good days and bad days like a tape echo. I also really love the pre-amp which I regularly use the same way as on the tube EP,, even with the delay feature is off . It's so buttery smooth and adds so much harmonic content to my sound While I still have fever dreams about a real tape echo, I am more than satisfied with my Belle Epoch. BTW, it has a nice tremolo effect in it as well. Read the manual. Great show as always.

    My nano board has become a thorpyfx fuzz, a boost, and an El Cap delay w/fav switch. Haven't looked back, the strymon has so many useful tones and with the favorite switch it's two delays in one. The reverb is also perfectly serviceable for non verb amps. Highly recommend

    Great video. My EP-3 sounds incredible, but it's too unreliable to gig with. For YEARS I have tried to find a pedal that could do THAT sound, and none have gotten it right. A Moog MF-104M set to sample & hold modulation will get the pitch drift in the ballpark, but the repeats are too dark. The Belle Epoch and El Cap, while sounding great, don't get the mechanical character of the modulation right for me; the El Cap is too sine wave-y and the Belle Epoch's random glitches are too large.
    The Echoplex pedal sounds very, VERY close to the sound of my EP-3, and as such I'm excited to get one. Thanks for the in-depth look!

    El Cap seemed darkest, Belle Epoch most watery, but Echoplex was probably most usable in most situations. Obviously a bit of tweaking can rectify everything I've just said, but that's what I got from the A/Bing. The Echoplex with the tape age turned up sounds fantastic, though.

    Great comparison TPS....The new Echoplex sounds great, but when i tried it out i didn't love the way the knobs interacted. Definitely useful in a two echo "set it and forget it" live board, and let's not forget the convenience for keyboard players!! Even cooler if they had made it bigger, added the preamp and tap tempo, etc. Strymon seems more universal, but i'm sure many players will jump on the Echoplex.

    Great video but you guys didn't include the best tape echo simaulator pedal: the Boss RE-20 space echo. May not be a "boutique" one, but beats the El Cap, Belle and the new Echoplex. It nails the real RE-201 tape machine pretty much. The ramp up feature makes it stand out.

    I use old Multivox tape echo's. Both the 201 and 312, these are great echo units and after 30 years of using them, I never had a moisture problem. Also, I usually judge echo's using distortion with them. These units trail amazingly and they have reverb with the 201 being more like a weak fender reverb type sound and the 312 having a more lush and fuller reverb. The echo features are the same. I had to change tape only a few times over the years and demagnetize the heads. There are 4 heads in the Multivox. If you want to hear the 203, go to my "grindinglicks" page and watch the voodoo child video's. I suck in them but in either the 2, 3 or 4th part, I use the echo.

    I don't know how I missed this Pick n Mix, but it came up as I'm getting more into echo units. All the examples on this show are of such a high quality, but I feel the Belle Epoch sounds the closest to all the idiosyncrosies of the SS Tape Echo. I'm blown away, in such a small unit too! Damn, another one to go on my shopping list!

    Dan if you haven't had a chance yet you should try the Source Audio Nemesis delay! It knocked both a Carbon Copy and an El Cap off my main board because it 'did' tape just as well as the El Cap and the analog sound in it is absolutely beautiful. It even simulates the input filtering of analog delays so your base tone gets a little warmer and darker when you turn it on in Analog mode. I think you'd be a fan.

    Thank you, Dan and Mick. Can't get enough delay pedals. I've just ordered one of the least expensive and smallest delays I've ever seen - the Echo Bandit. It's a tape emulated delay with simple controls. It seems too good to be true, so we'll see when it finally arrives. All three of those pedals sounded great and slightly different from each other. I think the Strymon would be the most useful on stage as you can quickly change from the "short" head to the "long" head and have a subdivision for the tap tempo, which is built into the pedal.

    Just to add to previous comments that a multi head explanation/ show down would be the natural extension of this and the El Cap sounds less wack than the others which may or may not be good depending on your perspective. Using expression pedals, self oscillation , dub effects and general delay wackiness would be fun too.
    The Catalinbread has the pre amp but it is buried in an internal trimpot, unless it's a micro pedal then internal trimpots should be banned!
