They have made some of the best music I've ever heard. I'm crying right now knowing that you love their music. Their new song that they just put out is shatteringly beautiful.
@Gino Furzi The one where Jack and Mr. Roper were trying to unplug the kitchen sink and Janet and Chrissy, listening in from behind the kitchen door, thought they were having sex.
Every time I'm going through a really tough break up The National seems to drop a new album. Coincidence? I think not. You're all welcome for having such a troubled love life. They just keep releasing music to help me through.
Matt Berninger has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever been blessed to hear. Not to mention, The National has such a soothing sound mixed with raw energy and gorgeous lyrics. They are always amazing and lovely.
vincent van heerden I think Matt's been married since early 2000s. Doesn't mean you can't have complicated emotions and thoughts about it/life/relationships in general still.
well i don't think that every song he wrote was about him. It can be about you or about me or about any of us. What if he writes about literary characters. It's the best thing he can do, writing sad songs. And well If that was a joke I couldn't find it funny. I'm sorry! :D
I’m a musician and I listen to so many different bands, some are really good some are not my style but ... The National is the only band from the hundreds , maybe thousands of bands I’ve heard that I’ve stablished a deep connection , they’re different , they’re too .. real , I feel like crying listening to their music .. it’s so beautiful I’m from Ecuador , hope you guys come someday here Willo
I'm 52 and, after some 40 years of listening to and loving music, The National have over the last few years, become my favourite band. Now, that's some accolade. ❤
I'll add to the comment theme: Still miss him and probably will for a long time. He showed me this band and I listen to them probably 3 hours a day. Just really hope he understands that I genuinely love him and always will despite how things ended.
I just listened to this song 20x in a row...and each time, my heart broke open wide...tears flowing from my eyes...a cathartic release of pain and disappointments I thought I had moved past. THIS is the POWER of hauntingly vulnerable and beautiful music. I remember the first time I saw The National live at Shaky Knees...I started bawling the very first song...it was so profound and I felt so embarrassed. Thank you for the gift of your gorgeous music. ~♡
Main sounds is from a piano, but guitar does sound really ellegant. Such a good musicians those brothers. Personally, drums and the crooner voice in National songs determine its style
There have been National tracks that dont really hit me at first, much like this one, sometimes the verse moves too slow, or the chorus isnt as triumphant as my heart wants.....but with those slow moving tracks comes beautifully meshed, interweaving instrumentation that always breaks through at the end and really does a number on me. This track is gorgeous and will only grow on me more and more. By the time the album drops ill probably have cried to this song 3+ times......ugh. The National is my heart. Damn you Matt.....
Completely agree. The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness was that for me. To be honest, first time I listened to it I was very underwhelmed. Sounded too discordant. Now it's probably my third favourite of any of their songs, only behind Mistaken For Strangers and I Should Live In Salt.
Generally it's the tracks that grow on you over time that become you favourite songs. They usually have more "depth", be it lyrical, melodic, instrumental or whatever.
Nice! All my favorite National tracks usually are off of their EP's and b sides......Tall Saint and Cherry Tree are some of the most hard hitting Natty tracks to ever fuck my noggin....
Terence Shipp tbh, this is probably the best song of their career. The System Only Dreams is definitely more upbeat and accessible, but to me, this one is way better. I want more sounds like this on the upcoming album
Saw them in Milan last summer, I bursted into tears while they were playing Guilty Party. They are amazing live. Gave me such great emotions that I can still revive them...
Me and my girlfriend broke up right before this album dropped. This shit hits me so hard because there was no huge thing wrong but so many small things that added up and neither of us wanted to end it but it need to end. Fucking national hitting me right in the feels
Keep it up guys, it is always for the better in the long run, changes are like that, they can't help it. Just get everything you need out of your system
Hans Arteaga Romero too right mate too right, regardless I'm hyped, its not like their other stuff but I'm really digging this, I welcome this new style with open arms
what exactly do you feel are new elements? i do feel some new sounds but i cant pinpoint it. i loved where they went with trouble will find me, felt it was their best sound yet. I feel the changes are slight but can be significant, but the theme and feel is always maintained
drums as a first. also i have never listened that much of guitar layering within the records as on these 2 songs (this one and the system only dreams in total darkness) and during the glastonbury set they closed with a new song called "Turtleneck"...and guys let me tell ya, that song's a big monster, it's the national like we have never heard them before
This song will touch your heart, right away, from the beginning. Then, that playful and tricky drum, joining at exactly the right moment, at 1:20, will give you some hope, that maybe, things may cheer up. They won't. So sad but so beautiful.
"Guilty Party" You're sleeping night and day How'd you do it Me I am wide awake Feeling defeated I say your name I say I'm sorry I know it's not working I'm no holiday It's nobody's fault No guilty party We just got nothing Nothing left to say Another year gets away Another summer of love I don't know why I care We miss it every summer I say your name I say I'm sorry I'm the one doing this There's no other way It's nobody's fault No guilty party I just got nothing, nothing left to say It all, all catches up to me It all, all catches up to me all the time I say your name I say I'm sorry I know it's not working, I'm no holiday It's nobody's fault No guilty party We just got nothing, nothing left to say I say your name I say I'm sorry I'm the one doing this, there's no other way It's nobody's fault No guilty party I just got nothing, nothing left to say It all, all just catches up to me It all, all catches up to me all the time
Es increíble la manera en la que hacen la música, cada segundo te pone una imagen de tu vida en tu cabeza, cada segundo es una vibra demasiado agradable para el alma. Gracias The National, gracias por acompañarme una madrugada más.
I can relate to this to a painful extent. Feel like I'm losing touch with a whole bunch of my friends. Was in that sort of headspace when I heard this for the first time and it absolutely fucking wrecked me. Probably why I don't listen to it as often as System or Carin, but it's a fantastic song that might be easier for me to handle in time.
Reach out to them Gareth. If they're true friends it doesn't matter if it's been weeks, months since you've seen or spoken to them. Don't know what you're going through that has led you away from those close to you but hope you can get through it. Life isn't finite and there are periods in our life that are just temporary. The shit times make us stronger, we just don't realise how much until we've come out the other side.
Such wonderful, touching, soul-gripping sounds, the tones and textures become so personal, even poignant, that I can swear a mass of emotion rose in my chest, an immense sensation like being hit in the chest by a wrecking ball. Such an intense feeling, it was a heartache like I've never known, similar to intense mourning, a yearning for something so valuable, now lost, never ever to be replaced or duplicated. I became so sad and honestly emotional that my eyes watered, producing a few tears. This is one of those songs you can never stop listening to.
Watching you live on Pitchfork in Paris this song immediately went right into my heart! It's so beautiful! I love the other new one's too, but this one just hit me right from the beginning.
Not heading. There. This is exactly what it feels like…and it’s hell. It’s pain. It’s hurt. It’s ugly. It devastates your kids in the process. I hate all of it, but I’m here. This song is so beautiful in how it explains it.
it might be the influence of the scrolling images, but to me this song evokes less of a break up or other romantic story and more of a parent-child relationship. I just imagine a parent watching a sleeping child, thinking through all the ways they're failing, but trying. that's the beauty of the song-writing though; it calls up specific feelings in listeners but can be interpreted any number of ways.
Heard it yesterday on my favorite internet station: Pinguin Radio and immediately moved me! For me this is one of the best of The National. Cannot wait to hear and buy the album next month......
Funny - at first listen, I passed this over completely. After a few more, I'm absolutely hooked. Sort of a 'Slipped' vibe on this, which I absolutely love. Beyond amped for the new album!
I love this band. My favorite in many ways. But I long for the more melodic, rocking side of these guys.....the shuffling melodies of Aligator stirred me like no other record before or since. And while I see the merits of this new material, its colder and more obtuse----but still brilliant.
I definitely hear the "Please forgive me" beat in this song! Good catch! David is a genius, I think NEMESIS is David's best song ever. Can listen to it over and over never gets old.
Beautiful, beautiful song. Man, those lyrics - they really hit hard. I hear a little bit of the Boxer Rebellion - especially as the song picks up when the drums come in. Can't wait for the album!
I am a long-time fan of The National. I am the frontman for an alternative acoustic band 'Heroine Lullaby', our songs are emotionally driven, and honest. We are based in South Wales, and I thought the subscribers on this channel may like to support a band like ours to allow music like this to be appreciated and have a place in an already convoluted market of 'radio friendly unit shifters'.
Makes me wanna go cry somewhere in a three-piece suit. You beautiful bastards.
LampshadeCrab read this like 'three-piece swimming suit' and I was like yeah I see what you mean
unacceptableeee!!
Most relatable comment in the history of relatable comments.
Perfect. & especially while it's raining.
No. It's sunny and you're the only one
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs in existence
They have made some of the best music I've ever heard. I'm crying right now knowing that you love their music.
Their new song that they just put out is shatteringly beautiful.
I just heard the theme song from Three's Company and felt the same way.
BigmanBrook this.
Sorry, but I hope you keep getting dumped. If that's the case. But cheer up, mate.
I'm with you my friend. It's a hefty price to pay, but damn is it worth it.
ka
Same here, you are not alone. Stay strong kid
Matt Berninger has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever been blessed to hear. Not to mention, The National has such a soothing sound mixed with raw energy and gorgeous lyrics. They are always amazing and lovely.
Agree.. Amazing vocals
How shit is this guy at relationships to be this heartbroken for 6 albums though?
Not complaining, I hope he keeps it up... but damn.
vincent van heerden I think Matt's been married since early 2000s. Doesn't mean you can't have complicated emotions and thoughts about it/life/relationships in general still.
He’s our favorite sad sack
He's a bad breaker upper !
well i don't think that every song he wrote was about him. It can be about you or about me or about any of us. What if he writes about literary characters. It's the best thing he can do, writing sad songs. And well If that was a joke I couldn't find it funny. I'm sorry! :D
@Pranjal Protim coldplay fucking rocks and randomly mentioning another band is a shitty defense, lol
I’m a musician and I listen to so many different bands, some are really good some are not my style but ... The National is the only band from the hundreds , maybe thousands of bands I’ve heard that I’ve stablished a deep connection , they’re different , they’re too .. real , I feel like crying listening to their music .. it’s so beautiful

I'm 52 and, after some 40 years of listening to and loving music, The National have over the last few years, become my favourite band.
Now, that's some accolade. ❤
Absolutely, 100%
I'll add to the comment theme: Still miss him and probably will for a long time. He showed me this band and I listen to them probably 3 hours a day. Just really hope he understands that I genuinely love him and always will despite how things ended.
I love how absolutely drained he sounds on this song, works beautifully with the lyrics.
and video too
I just listened to this song 20x in a row...and each time, my heart broke open wide...tears flowing from my eyes...a cathartic release of pain and disappointments I thought I had moved past. THIS is the POWER of hauntingly vulnerable and beautiful music.

If you've lived through this, you know this song is too real. Painful listening... but cathartic. Thank you, The National.
Exactly it sums up everything
Wow, already one of my favorite National songs. That guitar work at 2:43 is incredible.
Colin Beirne I let out the softest 'oh' when I heard it
that was a guitar? thought that was a piano.
Main sounds is from a piano, but guitar does sound really ellegant. Such a good musicians those brothers. Personally, drums and the crooner voice in National songs determine its style
JASON BARR
I don't know about the 80s, but I'm getting a Swingtown vibe off of it.
@oddun It's definitely a guitar.
Generally it's the tracks that grow on you over time that become you favourite songs. They usually have more "depth", be it lyrical, melodic, instrumental or whatever.
DrunkNBrawlin man, Mistaken for Strangers is the most perfect song ever released for me. Don't swallow the cap a close second.
Not crying over this song anymore means that I'm over the breakup. Doesn't it?
ShiruSama1 eventually you laugh about how young you were and how douchey they are. Maybe just an image of who you're waiting to find.
thank you
Saw them in Milan last summer, I bursted into tears while they were playing Guilty Party. They are amazing live. Gave me such great emotions that I can still revive them...
Got tears in my eyes listening to this. Beautiful.
It is heartbreaking
Me and my girlfriend broke up right before this album dropped. This shit hits me so hard because there was no huge thing wrong but so many small things that added up and neither of us wanted to end it but it need to end. Fucking national hitting me right in the feels
SirYacob hey same, bud. welcome to the heartbreak club, all we do is listen to the national and nod our heads between taking sips of rum
Keep it up guys, it is always for the better in the long run, changes are like that, they can't help it. Just get everything you need out of your system
Same. It dropped the exact same week
I cannot handle how great this is. I need an ambulance
eeep mood
This song describes breaking up perfectly.. The feeling of hopelessly trying to mend the relationship and not wanting to face the fact that it's over.
Yes. And not to point a quilty one
I'm liking the new sound, I think this album is going to be a game changer for The National
Matthew Speed they made lots of new songs during their Glastonbury set and it will definitely be a game changer
Antonio Pomposini the drumming in this song is super prominent, their drummer has always been great but on this song it just rises to the top
drums as a first. also i have never listened that much of guitar layering within the records as on these 2 songs (this one and the system only dreams in total darkness) and during the glastonbury set they closed with a new song called "Turtleneck"...and guys let me tell ya, that song's a big monster, it's the national like we have never heard them before
Sometimes instead of walking straight into the ocean... there's the national. It's nice not to feel alone in a feeling.
This song will touch your heart, right away, from the beginning. Then, that playful and tricky drum, joining at exactly the right moment, at 1:20, will give you some hope, that maybe, things may cheer up. They won't. So sad but so beautiful.
Lost count how many times I’ve listened to this song. Lyrically, vocally, instrumentally, rhythmically stunning
Thank you for the soundtrack of my life! For more than ten years now....
Why is the National always so damn relatable. Love this song, just keeps growing on me every time I listen.
The electronic elements add more layers to their music making it even richer than before. The evolution of this band is remarkable.
"Nobody's fault... no guilty party. It all, catches up to me... all the time." 😢
My favorite line 😢
That drum sequence at 3:04 is just amazing. Gives me chills every time.
"Guilty Party"
You're sleeping night and day
How'd you do it
Me I am wide awake
Feeling defeated
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I know it's not working
I'm no holiday
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
We just got nothing
Nothing left to say
Another year gets away
Another summer of love
I don't know why I care
We miss it every summer
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I'm the one doing this
There's no other way
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
I just got nothing, nothing left to say
It all, all catches up to me
It all, all catches up to me all the time
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I know it's not working, I'm no holiday
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
We just got nothing, nothing left to say
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
I'm the one doing this, there's no other way
It's nobody's fault
No guilty party
I just got nothing, nothing left to say
It all, all just catches up to me
It all, all catches up to me all the time
Feels like an apt sequel to "About Today"
apt story 2
Es increíble la manera en la que hacen la música, cada segundo te pone una imagen de tu vida en tu cabeza, cada segundo es una vibra demasiado agradable para el alma. Gracias The National, gracias por acompañarme una madrugada más.
The National always make me feel all the feels, this song is so beautiful.
Schedule of the day: 1) turn on The National-Guilty Party 2)Cry 3) Repeat
Lol it happened to me when I first heard this
This.
loving the vibe. drums are amazing as usual.
Brian Pineda Seriously, the drumming here is unreal. His most inventive drumming since the Boxer days, easily.
omg i'm sooo excited for this album ♥️♥️♥️ i missed you guys!
Okay. Who else cried when they listened to this song?
I can relate to this to a painful extent. Feel like I'm losing touch with a whole bunch of my friends. Was in that sort of headspace when I heard this for the first time and it absolutely fucking wrecked me. Probably why I don't listen to it as often as System or Carin, but it's a fantastic song that might be easier for me to handle in time.

God. Why do all their songs have to be so beautifully heartbreaking?
Such wonderful, touching, soul-gripping sounds, the tones and textures become so personal, even poignant, that I can swear a mass of emotion rose in my chest, an immense sensation like being hit in the chest by a wrecking ball. Such an intense feeling, it was a heartache like I've never known, similar to intense mourning, a yearning for something so valuable, now lost, never ever to be replaced or duplicated. I became so sad and honestly emotional that my eyes watered, producing a few tears. This is one of those songs you can never stop listening to.
This is the thing, they always change their sound but always stay true to themselves.
Another year gets away
Another summer of love
I don't know why I care
We miss it every summer
I found this band a couple of months ago. And, I keep refinding them, again and again, every week after that. This is beautiful.
When you are lonely and your birthday is in summer. Perfect tune to celebrate
happy birthday bro!
Watching you live on Pitchfork in Paris this song immediately went right into my heart! It's so beautiful! I love the other new one's too, but this one just hit me right from the beginning.
This is when I fell in love with this band and I am so excited for their success because they are truly amazing
This is exactly what heading towards a divorce feels like.
1000%
Agree, I'm so sorry you are feeling this way, understand 💘
Totally. It's official at the beginning of 2021
Absolutely. And there it is... relevant again.
Not heading. There. This is exactly what it feels like…and it’s hell. It’s pain. It’s hurt. It’s ugly. It devastates your kids in the process.
I hate all of it, but I’m here.
This song is so beautiful in how it explains it.
I want to step out on the deck of of a snow covered mountain cabin and stare into infinity with this on repeat.
My good taste in music brought me here ;)
This band simply can't make bad music, can they?
Loved the song. Excited for the new album!
Wow this is so textured with sounds. It's wonderfully constructed.
I'm really happy with the way the song turned out, the timing was also spot on.
My ears say thank you.
Yup
This band is surprising me every time how good they can get and increase themselves.
Love to see you two times in berlin.
I'm finally early. Nice to be a part of the Guilty Party party
NeonFairytale Yes!
love you hun truth eh
Can't wait for the show in Queens, early October. So happy to be hearing new stuff. This band never disappoints.
This is their best new song from the new album so far, by far! One of their all time best even! Ooo, how I love this song! So much emotion and depth.
this is so overwhelming.
The songs were poems,
and with music they became fluid,
and now I feel them swimming in my veins.
My The National/ My blood.
... @TheNational you never cease to impress me guys ! Your music goes so deep and yet sounds so bright. No one ever comes close
This is kinda hitting me hard right now. I've been listening to this album on repeat.
The brass comes in with such perfect timing.. A beautiful experience had by all....
I say your name
I say I'm sorry
No it's not working
This is the best that you can find actually in the world... Finally Again The National.. and their masterpiece album!
digging the more electronic style, glad it's a good fit for y'all! pumped for the album!
it might be the influence of the scrolling images, but to me this song evokes less of a break up or other romantic story and more of a parent-child relationship.
The National you did it again. I have never been more excited for this album
Great sound!!!! can't wait to hear the rest of the new record!!
such beautifull melancholic song
the arrangement on this song along, incredible
Funny - at first listen, I passed this over completely. After a few more, I'm absolutely hooked. Sort of a 'Slipped' vibe on this, which I absolutely love. Beyond amped for the new album!
Binge listening to these guys for a few days, and now another single drop? I WANT SLEEP WELL BEAST ALREADY.
This is getting me more excited.
This is shaping up to be their best album. Wow. So good, man. Well done guys!
Type of music that makes you wish that you were going through a tough break up, just so you can experience the National better
SO excited to see my favourite band live in october!! definitely getting the album too!
this is a NATIONAL treasure
nicolas cage is playing xylophone in the background of this track. u might not be able to hear it but someone from the label confirmed it!!
Jacques Jacobi Nicolas Cage actually plays all the instruments for the National. He puts on disguises and cleverly uses mirrors to play shows.
Roughly 10% of the world's population is actually Nicolas Cage in disguise.
THE DECLARATION!
I don't get it
Best thing i´ve heard in years from this band. Hypnotic!! Look forward to the album
This song makes me cry like a baby.
Oh, this is beautiful. Thank you once again, guys.
Beautiful. Looking forward to the release.
omg i love this song. so happy to be in touch with it again. though it has never left. lol.
I love this band. My favorite in many ways. But I long for the more melodic, rocking side of these guys.....the shuffling melodies of Aligator stirred me like no other record before or since. And while I see the merits of this new material, its colder and more obtuse----but still brilliant.
Apparently Turtleneck on the new record is super rocky.
That "idk why i care" just hit different 😔
Love the national came to Boston in June on my b day missed them and I would do anything to see them hands down number one band in my eyes
Fantastic new music from The National - this is 'Guilty Party'
4AD
YES!!!!!
Can't wait for the new album's release!!!!!!! :D :D
4AD ... is that what that says?
This is awesome
"Please Forgive Me" by David Gray and "Idioteque" by Radiohead had a baby
I definitely hear the "Please forgive me" beat in this song! Good catch! David is a genius, I think NEMESIS is David's best song ever. Can listen to it over and over never gets old.
veerchasm1 ....I agree and a lil bit of New Order about 2 minutes in
Who'dve thought people have musical influences...? Thankfully their influences arent Jedward and Crazy Frog.
Nah. It's straight up Bruce Springsteen.
SO ACCURATE
Beautiful.
when the real drums kick in >>
I wish CZcams had a Mega-Like option
so glad i had notifications on omg
"It all, all catches up to me,
It all, all catches up to me all the time.."
One of the best songs ever made
This is astonishingly beautiful
Anyone else get goosebumps
Beautiful, beautiful song. Man, those lyrics - they really hit hard. I hear a little bit of the Boxer Rebellion - especially as the song picks up when the drums come in. Can't wait for the album!
The National always comes out with something new just when I need it personally.
It all catches up with me..All..The time.
I keep coming back to this song
Love this band so much 💙 they just keep getting better and better ✌🏽
Waking up to this ❤
